Right, really respectful. Newsflash, Reagan has only begun very recently (well after he was out of office, let's see, THREE presidents later) begun exhibiting characteristics of Alzheimer's. Trying to portray him as a blithering idiot while in office is pretty sad. Yeah, he was so crazy that he successfully ended the Cold War, saw the dissolution of the USSR (who had missles pointed to the US for decades), predicted and SAW the tear down of the Berlin Wall. Yeah, a real crazy guy...

I didn't know Johnny Depp was so incredibly influential--his opinion must be worth a LOT, given his obvious intellectual and social achievements, not to mention the fact the mother of his children is a BABE. I'm sure everyone is hanging on his every word.

Ah, France. It's lovely, provided you're not old and the rest of your family has taken off for holiday to leave you to die in sweltering heat. And then when they learn of your death, to go ahead and finish the rest of their holiday, since your dead anyway...Yes, they love their leisure time, no matter what, or who, the expense. That's civilization at its finest.

Well, I haven't read the Awake article. And whether this person actually DID talk to whomever during that time, I have to ask what the significance of it really is. My mom tried to make a big deal about Bethelites "feeding and sheltering" victims of 9/11. My firm belief is that there was probably just a bit too much REAL non-JW heroism displayed during this time...took the focus of the JW's supposed self-sacrificing martyrdom. Personally, I don't know what the context of the Awake magazine's contents were or WHO this particular elder was, but I don't doubt for a minute their attempt to spin the event to make the "brothers" look heroic, while the rest of the world less so.

JW's 'acting badly'.

the worst experience i think i ever had with jws acting badly was one time when a good friend of mine (a former jw like myself) tom, had a jw cousin in the hospital due to a very bad car accident.

his cousin (a woman in her late thirties) had suffered severe head trauma and it was not known at that time if she would recover.

practically all of toms immediate and extended family was jws.

On a hospital related note, my brother in law (an elder) who lives about 5 miles away from me, was in a traumatic accident a few months ago. My JW parents contacted me (from out of town) and said that they would be going to the hospital. My sister was in such anguish that she couldn't tell them what hospital he was in; I helped them sort that out and told them I would be going to the hospital as well. When I got there, there was a whole crowd of people (all JWs), which sounds like it's wonderful support, but actually my sister and her family were overwhelmed: it was too many people, and she just wanted family: giving everyone all the updates on my BIL's condition was too much.

An elder I used to know actually said it was "sweet" of me to come to the hospital and show such concern. What? "Sweet" of me? This was my family, my blood family who was suffering, and because I'm disassociated, coming to aid and support my family during time of tragedy, is "sweet." Made me sick. It's as though he was really saying that the whole congregation was his family, not mine.

Ugh. Maybe it seems petty, but it really galled me to think that showing normal concern for one's FAMILY was above and beyond a non-JW.

i will be backing former vermont gov howard dean to run in '04.

my reason: clinton was quoted recently as saying that "strong and wrong always beats weak and right".

i remember during the run up to election in 2000 watching the bush vs. gore debates and thinking..i know gore is smarter but he comes across as weaker in debate.

Sure they do: it’s called do nothing. Except criticize Bush for being too aggressive. Except criticize Bush for not trying to be nice to the French and garner the approval of the rest of the non-leading world. He doesn’t have Clinton’s flair for doublespeak and showmanship (that explaining his crimes by explicating the various meanings of the word “is”. That takes some smarts, no doubt. His commitment from N. Korea to stop producing nukes was obviously so incredibly successful. Yes, the key, according to Clinton, is to charm ‘em. He, no doubt, could have negotiated with Saddam (as successfully as with N. Korea, I’m sure).

I used to be a dem. But I’m defecting. I’ve graduated grade school, and no longer see the “Dumb Repub” stereotype to be even remotely intelligent in and of itself.

Sure, people like Gore (although he scored less on his SAT’s than Clinton), are so much more supremely intelligent. (One wonders, based upon what data exactly?)

And yes, then there IS Gray Davis. The perennial "do nothing" guy until his arse is on the line. Whoa, then he wakes up! Yeah, I'm sure he's simply too smart for any of us averge Joe's to truly appreciate him.

Okay, well maybe he didn't do that, but I am sure he kept meticulous records on how many hours/minutes he preached and how many holy-writing studies he conducted. Since he traveled by foot (not minivan) to preach to people, he was able to count a lot more time, too.

Geeze, where has this reporter been for the last few decades? Thanks for the lovely little piece telling everyone the JW tactics. Dubs have become so well known (and avoided) by most people that they have been the subject of countless late night jokes. Can't recall who said it, maybe Letterman, but after the scandal disaster, he said quipped that he was worried that people might not want to talk to them now...(hah!!!).

And the fastest growing religion? The dubs have been using the same 6 million figure for as long as I can remember. Sound like someone just the reporter a 1970 Yearbook as his source.

i watched both and was convinced of ojs guilt but was also convinced of lwoodwoods innocence.

You really are mixing oranges and apples. You can call whomever you want “evil,” “apostate,” or whatever. Fine and dandy. But when you KILL them and instigate violent acts against them, then you are a terrorist. Do you think that 9-11 represented a valid “retaliation” against the US?

Well, sorry, I cannot go back to re-write history for you. I sense you (as I warned in my original message) seem to be anti-war, no matter what the reason. Hard to have an intelligent discussion if that’s what you believe. Sorry, but just because Saddam wasn’t removed from power in 1990, doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t deal with the reality of today.

When did I label anyone a nazi? I simply pointed out that people who felt that French dissident action to German occupation was NOT tantamount to the situation in Iraq for many, many reasons. You, however, have failed to explain the similarity.
