Water and grit under pressure certainly can go through Granite much faster than than that. However, you might want to be aware that not every creationist on this forum buys into the young-earth theories. The admission that the Genesis text allows more time for the creation of the universe and the earth itself is one Dub belief I've seen no evidence to justify dropping. As for the Grand Canyon in particular, I don't have enough knowledge of the geological makeup of its strata to have a position one way or the other.

Starting a collection of the Inexplicable JW Doctrines...
by AuldSoul ini am starting a collection of jw doctrines and practices that have no basis in the scriptures and (preferably) that the scriptures or secular history directly contradicts.
this isn''t a thread for arguing with scholar is he drops by.
i want as comprehensive a set as possible as part of a project i am working on, so even if you aren't sure of one, please toss it in the mix.

How about their salvation through works doctrine? I know, they say they don't teach that, but what else is it when they teach that one must go door to door for the WTBTS in order to be saved?

Help --Pre-JW Faithful and Discreet Slave??
by lynnmelo inhi, folks.
for those who may not remember my previous posts, i'm someone who has been studying with the jw's for about two years but didn't commit (i.e., get baptized) because, as i thought then, i was just too selfish and cowardly to join up with the jw's.
that's before i found this site and watched the dateline video on the child molestation problem.

Many of the groups that the WTBTS mentions are either not around anymore, or they've changed in way that they are quite different now. Groups that are around today that share many beliefs in common with the JWs but may not be as controlling would be the Universalists, The Christadelphians, and possibly the Second adventists (Russell was very invovled with the Second Adventists until he broke with Barbour and was guided very much by George Storrs, a Secon Adventist.).
The Bible Students, whom the WTBTS still calls the "Evil Slave", are still very much around. They vary form the Laymens Home Missionary movement and the DAWN, who pretty much reject much of Russell's teachings, to much more conservative types. Just Google "Bible Students" and you will find quite a few sites for them. The Associated Bible Students appear to be about as close to the middle of the road among those groups. If you live in the Midwest U.S., you might not be all that far from one of them if that potential solution appeals to you. You might want to look around at http://www.biblestudents.net/forum which is a forum hosted by an Associated Bible Students Ministry. That way you can see if that is along the lines you are thinking. They also have a site who's articles are now linked on that forum.
I wish you the best in your quest to find an acceptable alternative to the Borg.

HOW TO THINK LIKE A FUNDY
by Reluctant Buddha inplanning a career in online christian fundamentalist apologetics?
how about the exciting world of young-earth creationism?
witnessing to, and debating with, atheists and other hellbound unsaved sinners on the internet can be hard work, so you need to familiarise yourself with the tried and tested methods used by fundies all around the world.

Well, it looks like folks had a little fun with my statement. The only one who made a point that wasn't insulting was PeacefulPete. You had a good point friend! I should've said Fanatical materialists, which would've been more accurate instead of using a political term. Kudos!
Oh, excuse me Shining one! Your point was much the same as mine. The "better than you" attitude that the article cliamed to dislike in "fundies" are also often characteristic of their critics. They start with a narrow world view (there is nothing beyond the material universe) and engage in all the fallacies and uncouth actions that they so claim to abhor in "fundies". Just look around on this forum if you don't like what I just said. Anyone who disagrees with the materialist outlook is said to be narrow minded, fanatical, uneducated, or even just plain stupid. Whenever a theist attempts to engage in dialouge, they are usually subjected to ad hominem attacks, their comments are ridiculed, or brushed-off as irrelevant. Just look at some of the comments my little post inspired for instance.
The reason many theists avoid the debate is not because they can't hold a good debate, or because its unfair, it is because they think more highly of themselves than to subject themselves to the kind of mud-slinging that passes for debate with fanatical materialists. As I said earlier, with a little reworking, the article could do quite nicely for Fanatical Materialists as well. Show me where I am wrong!

Definition of an apostate?
by ThomasCovenant inmy first post but i've been looking for about 12 months.
very interesting to get others views on jw matters.
very quick background.

Forscher
Here is the definition as it appears in the reasoning book:
*** rs p. 34 Apostasy ***
Apostasy
Definition: Apostasy is abandoning or deserting the worship and service of God, actually a rebellion against Jehovah God. Some apostates profess to know and serve God but reject teachings or requirements set out in his Word. Others claim to believe the Bible but reject Jehovah’s organization.
If it were simply a matter of abandoning God, then most here would not be apostates. However, notice that last sentence in the definition, "Others claim to believe the Bible but reject Jehovah’s organization." That is the crux of the matter. Questioning the Governing body is in and of itself apostasy as far as they are concerned.

Regardless what you think of it Evolution has brought us great good
by zagor ininstead of replying to numerous new threads that come up every day about intelligent design vs. evolution ive decided to rather open a new thread.
(go with the flow kind of thing .
personally, im not completely certain how life originated (but neither are many scientist) however, life does change over time and animals and humans alike do adapt to new conditions, which often changes their shape and characteristics.

At the risk of getting jumped on here, I don't have a big problem with thought that Evolution, as a theory has done some good. Since I have no problem with the concept of MICROevolution, I can say that. Neither will I deny that the materialist base for science was a good thing. It resulted in progress because it kept religious organizations from defining what was and wasn't in the material realm. But when the scienticfic community trys to set itself up as the ultimate arbiter of truth, then it goes beyond its boundries. That is what it is doing in the classrooms.

How much written in this Forum can be believed?
by Spectrum ini want to turn this forum on its head for this thread.
i'm here on this forum to find as many truths as is possible relating to jwism.
i'm not really here to stick the boot in although once in a while my emotions might get the better of me.

Like anywhere else, you have to take some things with a grain of salt. However, my own experiences in the organization make it hard to simply discount much of what I see here. While we were being shunned, a visiting sister talked shyly asked my wife if we were DF'd (we were not, we were being shunned because the Alpha-dominant elder wanted it so even thoguh he could not get grounds to make it official). After being reassured that we were not, she listened to our story then told my wife that she'd been allover the U.S. and that such things were much more common than folks knew. So I have no reason to doubt the stories we are seeing.

It wouldn't take a whole lot of re-working to be able to title it "How to think like a Fanatical Liberal".
