New Software Program Purports to Prove Evolution
by Room 215 inresearchers at the university of michigan hae developed a software program that purports to replicate the process of random selection and that incontrovertibly proves evolution.
it's named avida, and is freely available via internet download.
it's all explained in the february issue of discover magazine.

DNA - belief destuction
by donkey inthe single largest reason to decimate my belief in jw?s and all biblical faith occurred when i discovered some facts about our cells.
specifically a part of the cell called mitochondria.
mitochondria are sometimes described as "cellular power plants" because their primary purpose is to manufacture adenosine triphosphate (atp), which is used as a source of energy that the cell uses.. as humans one inherits one?s mitochondria only from one's mother, this finding implies that all living humans have a female line of descent from a woman whom researchers have dubbed mitochondrial eve.

Another problem with that arguement is that DNA does evolve and change. It only takes about a year for a bacterium to evolve to resist antibiotics from inhibiting peptidoglycan production (but it takes about 12 years to come up with a new antibiotic - at least thats what the pharmers say).

As A JW.....what did u have most trouble refusing?
by ScoobySnax ini had the nights out on the beer with my "worldly" and sometimes witness mates having trouble turning them down.......i think that was probably my fall.

Birthdays, holidays, and patriotism. I mean these are the three socially isolating things that were the hardest growing up. I was always embarressed about being a JW, not because I didn't used to believe, but I just didn't want to be "different."

Are you still "hurt" from your JW experience?
by JH in.
i was just wondering if you still feel hurt or some kind of interior pain from your jw days or is it all passed and you have no more feelings towards this organization.... i still feel "hurt" and let down... .
afterall, they were friends, and now they just don't care anymore.

I suppose. Being a JW made me into a total social retard (really, I cannot make small talk nor do I have any sort of social knowledge that comes from being able to fully interact with other kids, otherwise known as "unwholesome influences.")

Book study books
by Heatmiser inwhen i was "in" the books where hard back.
now with them being paperback i would imagine them being very flimsy.
i was visiting my grandparents a few months ago and my jw parents also happened to be visiting at the same time.

Yeah, they are generally good quality, and on this I must concede. They made rather fine bibles and I've only now found bibles that were better quality than theirs (quality of book, not translation): Cambridge University Press. WT uses rather nice bible paper that you rarely see in ones on the market. For example, I've a Cambridge bible that was about $100 and still didn't have India paper, but my other Cambridge one does (110$). I still can't believe how much they cost, but the leather is of extremely good quality (French Moroccan and Calfskin, not bonded leather like the WT bibles).

Cathedrals
by Peppermint insince leaving the jw?s i have developed a real appreciation of old cathedrals.
these places are beautiful and really took some building.
how boring and lifeless kingdom halls are in comparison.

Here's one in my city. It's now enclosed on all 4 sides by skyscapers and other buildings.

What obligation do you feel towards your family who are still in?
by czarofmischief ineverybody's situation is different, of course, and everybody has their own choices to make.. but do you recall that when we were dubs, we were constantly urged to go out in service, because people needed to hear what we thought was the truth?
they would use that scripture by paul, "i consider myself a debtor to all men" etc.
to enforce the moral compulsion to go door to door.. now that we know the truth about the truth; how obliged are we to tell our family?

My experience is that one can point out all the idiocies, contradictions, and false-prophecies all you like and it still never gets through. I think most JWs have turned off the logic part of their brain like most conspiracy theorists.

Were You Truly Aware of What Your Baptism Meant?
by minimus insome got baptized as kids.
others---a lot older.
at whatever age you were, did you really know what you were getting into?

I wasn't JW baptised, but what I always found interesting is that they were always talking about how baptism was the symbol of your "personal dedication to Jehovah." Never mind the fact that the whole idea of baptism being a "persoal dedication" does not exist in the bible. The bible really talks about a baptism for the "forgiveness of sins." But I think that JWs don't include this in their theology because they cannot believe that physical actions can have spiritual effects.
