Well, most historical writers from the Graeco-Roman period have always tried to imitate the Homeric style of writing. Michael Grant at Cambridge wrote in the introduction to the Annals of Imperial Rome: "Indeed, history owed its technique and its very existence to Homer and other Greek epic poems. Again, when Athenian tragic drama became great in the fifth century B.C., that also influenced Greek historical writing. These two facts emerge clearly from the works of Herodotus and Thucydides. And history never quite forgot its early links with poetry."

Corruption in Iraq ... why the cover-up ?
by Simon ini think it's because people high-up have their sticky fingers in the pie.. when the two whistle-blowers sued custer battles on behalf of the u.s. government?under a u.s. law intended to punish war profiteering and fraud?the bush administration declined to take part.. attorney general alberto gonzales why the government wasn't backing up the lawsuit.
because this is a "seminal" case?the first to be unsealed against an iraq contractor?
"billions of taxpayer dollars are at stake" based on the precedent it could set, the iowa republican said.. the administration has harshly criticized the united nations over hundreds of millions stolen from the oil-for-food program under saddam.

Why do you think the Iraq War was started?
The only problem is that it only benefited Bush's friends, not the whole economy as some wars do.

Would you want to go back to that 'illusion and fantasy'?
by Gill inhi all, and especially scoobysnax as i was just reading your post.. i saw a bit of the news yesterday and the archbishop of canterbury was giving a sermon.
the newscaster said that he was warning about the world's obsession with youth.
i'm not so sure that's what he was saying though.. he said, or words to this effect, that he felt pity for those who believed that they would never grow old, suffer illness and death in this life, and 'god help them' because of the illusion that they were living under.. i don't think he was talking about youth.

But the freedom to do that, to actually decide that for yourself is priceless.
I totally agree, its one of the great gifts.

It's strange, I choose to believe what is logical for me to believe, even if my gut feeling goes against it.
Of course, I wouldn't go back to the JWs, but I also think that freedom of thought and religion (well, not for the WTBTS) aren't incompatible.

I'm not a parent, but... your kid sounds fine. I mean, if you want him to start hanging around with kids his age, then sports is always a good place to start. What are kids playing now these days? Cricket?

Anyone notice the new KM policy on parking at district conventions??

When they used to be allowed to use the Pacific Colloseum, everyone had to pay for parking, but it didn't go to the WT, but to the government who owns the building. Of course even though at the last DC, the elders read a letter penned by the management saying that they love it when they come, they are no longer allowed to use the facilities.

Question for those raised a JW
by New Worldly Translation ini was wondering if anybody feels like i do that if i hadn't been raised a jw i would never have embraced the religion.
i know it's easier to say in hindsight after i know the truth about the org but honestly i don't think i would have given them the time of day.
i'm not a religious person or even a spiritual person and being a jw always caused a conflict in my mind.

I doubt it. I enjoy independent thinking too much.
