The 1000 word apostate challenge.

can you refute a jw doctrine in 1000 words or less (scriptural text and references excluded)?

pick one and try, if enough try it we should have a fairly compact "here's why you should leave the jw's" package.

here's an example: god?s name being ?jehovah?

I LOOOOVE this idea. Why? Because I had seen letters written by people that were called "apostate" before, but they were like 100 page letters with tons of technical references and looking at ancient tablets and stuff. To me that just made "apostates" seem that much more obsessive and bizarre.

If we had 1000 word essays on each major point it would provide lots of people simple talking points they can give to spouses, family members, friends, etc.

In reality the guy wouldn't even be working at Wal-Mart if he hadn't had it beat into his brain that he wasn't going to die in this system of things up intil 1995. He probably would have had a nice little nest egg by now.

Jehovahs Witness and the internet

i was reading another thread of the high # of defections within the org, and this lead me to question:.

when and if, do you think the org will totally ban jw's use of the internet?.

i think it will happen, they are starting to see a big drop and need to curtail it some how, and they know that many surf the web and come across sites like this, and once people discover all the coverups and the "new light" stuff and personal stories, their are going to be questions that lead to being df'd or da's.

I think what they'll do is get the R&F to automatically dismiss ANYTHING from the Internet if it didn't come from an official WT site.

They will probably do this by citing examples in yearbooks, at assemblies, and in the Kingdom Ministry about people that were deceived by information on the Internet. They probably won't even use any "apostate" examples - and in fact might use harmless information. Maybe they'll use something cheesey like "driving directions" or wacky "medical advice" or something like that. That will get them thinking along the lines of not trusting Internet information even if it seems legit. This "preps" their minds to accept the counsel later on that they are REALLY worried about. So, at a later date they will drive it home with "apostate" information. Since their minds are all ready to accept that non-JW Internet info is wrong - even if it's not apostate - they can get people to pretty much discount ANYTHING found on the Internet.

Growing up in it. . .I've got their number now.

Keep all your hard copies of stuff. I used to have ALL my Watchtowers from the 80's filed away. I am SOOOO kicking myself for throwing them out a few years ago. "Who needs all that when you have the WT CD-ROM?"

I agree with Bluegrass Tom.

I know for a FACT that many kids look at their parents with nothing materially or nothing stored away and do not wish to be like that.

A byproduct of these parents with nothing is the depression they now have. The stress of their twilight years that they were promised they would never see is too much and weird illnesses and stuff is the result.

These kids don't want the same dpressing lives as their parents. Plain and simple.

"what if it was proved to you without a doubt (i conceded that this was not possible) that the gb had no special mandate or guidance from hs?

what if they were just like anyone else who reads the bible alot?

I agree with sunspot.

For me, I have been concocting a strategy to start breaking this news to my wife and close family members. (Big ups to this list for all your help!)

I realize that if I start hammering at big stuff like the FDS and what a screwed up translation the NWT is, I am going to get nowhere.

It has to be in bits and pieces - start out small and save those big things for my fatality moves (Mortal Kombat video game fans will know what I'm talking about). I was gonna start with the misquotes in the Reasoning Book on the cross (those are pretty irrefutable), the flip-flops on Sodomites. These are all things that cannot be disputed, but they also aren't central to the JW "doctrine". If I can get her to agree on those points that something is kinda fishy - then I will have considered step one a success. At that point I can let all that soak in and we can move forward (hopefully) to their deceptions in the Trinity brochure, Creation, etc. And I need to work in the occasional secular scandal like the UN, Bulgaria. . .

Anyways, I'll start a new thread on my plans soon. I'm such a geek. . .I have it all broken down into "phases". :-)

Let me just say one more time how I love this forum. It has given me a certain confidence in myself this time around that I never would have had otherwise.

I don't think the Society is really sure what to make of it either - check out both of these quotes from 2002 (courtesy of quotes.watchtower.ca):

This has been my favorite reading for the week (hey, I've only been registered on the boards for 2 weeks now. . ).

I remember at Bethel they would have a "special meal" on that day. They gave everyone an early dismissal in the morning, and then everyone would go to their rooms and have parties and get a little blitzed and then head down for the "special meal".

I don't remember seeing that in the brochure. . .
