What have we done? Why the hatred?"
These question astounds me. Do you truly not know, I presume you must live in the USA.

so, according to genesis 1v1, ''in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth'' - so what i want to know is if god lives in the heavens now, where did he live before he created them?
was he just renting a place?
maybe his nan's spare room?

I think both Satanus and James Thomas make good points. I fell into the same trap as most Christians or JWs who tried to conceal any deep-seted questions or doubts. Then I was pointed in the right direction by I book I stumbled across, the one I made an amazon link to earlier on this thread. It so helped me 'get' the comments of people like S and JT above.

The Bible does not actually speak of a creation out of nothing, as later theologians were to do. It speaks of a formation of heaven & earth, & God's spirit hovering over the deep. Jews & Christians liked to think an all powerful God must have created the deep. But this 'deep' was consistently symbolic for the dangerous power of chaos. But a theme of creation as God's conquest over the Deep (chaos) is a theme found elsewhere in the Bible. (Psalm 74:13, Isaiah 27:1, Isaiah 51:9).
Only at the end of time, and only then, will the sea, chaos be finally overcome. Just now it is just being restrained. 'there was no longer any sea' (Revelation 21:1)
Jesus always spoke in parables, never literally, and yet so many Christians today try to interpret the rest of the Bible, and also Jesus words too literally, but only when it suits them. I don't see many plucking out their eyes when this causes them to sin, yet they take the other bits of the same sermon literally.

Greendawn & Bigdog,
I agree with your viewpoint. So many people take Bible passages about the nature of God, creation and the final ending of the universe, in such a crudely literal sense, that they come into unnecessary conflict with ordinary scientific knowledge.
"To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to?" (Isaiah 40:18).
were the bible students (watchtower) the only 'christian' religion not on the watch for christ's arrival in 1914, or were there others?
the magazine was then called "the watchtower & herald of christ's presence" because the teaching of russell and rutherford at the time (and right up to 1943) was that christ had already returned - in 1874. so when he arrived and was knocking (luke 12:36) allegedly in 1914, they were not on the watch as they thought he had arrived decades earlier.
was the watchtower the only christian religion asleep and not watching for christ's return in 1914, or were there others?
Logically, if you think Christ is ALREADY PRESENT you cannot be expected to watch for the arrival!
Terry, thanks
Dec 1 1984 Watchtower, page 14 says "So when Christ's visible presence began in 1914, happy were [JWs] to have been found watching."
But that cannot have been true, as they insisted for for 29 years after 1914 that his presence had started in 1874. Luke 12:36 says "At [Jesus'] arriving and knocking they may at once open to him." But if he arrived and knocked in 1914, why did JWs not acnowledge his arrival for many many years years?
And do they claim once again to be 'on the watch' now? And if so, for what? a third coming? Please forgive my confusion as a non-JW.

Your question is an excellent one, which illustrates how the majority of religions wrongly interpret Scriptures. The idea of God being thought of as a person or even a being, and existing in a place, or several places at once in space and time, is so limiting. None of this is what the Bible really teaches. Only a tiny bit of the Bible should ever be understood literally, and even these portions have several deeper meanings at the same time, which none of us fully understand.
i find it interesting that the wts has this persecution complex.
apostates all out to get them and stuff.
i must say that although a search on the web will bring you lots of great anti-jw stuff(thier own fault because they only have 1 official website) the number of people actually trash talking is quite small and its mostly ex-jws and some still in the org.
Absolutely! By their Governing Body and those carrying out its orders.
what would it be?
for me i would get rid of the disfellowshipping!
They would discover they are supposed to be witnesses of Christ (Acts 1:8) and therefore take the name Christians (Acts 11:26) (1 Peter 4:16) (1 Peter 4:14)
