Also, really dig into the 1914 math. Have him explain the "time, time, and half a time" issue. Really try to comprehend how it works, not just accept it. Don't accept "a day for a year" in an unrelated book of the bible to figure out the end of the Gentile Times. Also, if you challenge him/her to show you in other books about 607 BCE and Babylon. This is one of the witnesses FUNDAMENTAL reasons for existence. They preach these are the last days and Jesus returned invisibly to heaven in 1914, thus the great seperating work. If the 1914 thing doesn't jive to you, the whole reason for being as a religion falls apart.
Or at least it fell apart for me there. If the main foundation of the belief structure is flawed how can the religion be anything but a house built on sand.

Just had my first ever study with a JW
by jaffacake ini wanted to ask questions about the organisation, but he looked me in the eye & ignored my questions to pursue his agenda.. he listed about 15 topics for us to study, to prove only jws are based on 1st century christianity.
i got him to agree not to attack other religions, (proving them false does not prove jws true) he agreed with this but then went on to criticise other religions!
next week i'll be firmer on this point!.

That was one of my major points. We have to trust the people who are entrusted to weigh evidence and make dcisions about what a person might want if there is not implict written record. The self serving media and such is not a proper avenue for making judgement calls about what really happened.
I've seen people furious on here that the husband is going to "deny" her a "proper" Catholic burial. And "what's the harm of letting the parent's have this last request?"
Can I ask you, if the Jdubs had some odd funeral rite and your mate knew you wouldn't want those things done to your body.... wouldn't you expect him/her to honor those wishes. Simply giving in to the pressure of parents who may or may not accepted your wishes to fulfill their own guilt, honor, system?
If you want certain procedures followed make sure to create a living will and instructions on how you would want medical treament applied / withheld...that's all I'm saying. It's too late for Terri and we have to assume that the many multiple courts and judges have interpreted what she would have wanted. -

Okay Yiz you completely contradict yourself in the above statements. You accept as FACT when someone is saying what they heard when it supports your belief structure, yet dismiss other testimony when it doesn't support it.
Various courts have ruled CONSISTENTLY for over 7 years now what they believed to be the wishes of this patient. 15 seperate judges have passed down judgement, in each and every time supporting the end decision to cease artificial life. I was not in any of these judcial actions yet I have to believe that 15 seperate judges spanning 7 years have dutifully considered all the facts.
A "code blue" IS NOT "code" for showing up 10 minutes after a patient lapses and needs CPR...it is for an immediate and full response to restore cardiac function. However, it is not uncommon for patients who are nearing life's end to code 3, 5, or 10 times AN HOUR. Some families just cannot grasp the idea that their loved one is ALREADY gone and insist on "heroic" measures to keep them alive. While the entire medical staff knows from experience that they are only prolonging the inevitable and in fact doing more damage to the patient by allowing contiuing measures, ie,,, multiple broken ribs from CPR and such. The patient's is dead, but the body just hasnt' quite figured out yet because of the life sustaining machinery doing it's work. You sound like you are bitter from your own loss of a family member and have an axe to grind with the medical staff.
From my experience I have found Christianity to be one of the worst offenders at preparing their followers for their mortality. JW's included. You would think that since these people believe in a Earthly Paradise or Heaven that they would want their loved one's to move on to the next step of existence. But I find this not to be the case many times. I don't want to make gross generalizations here, but in my 15 years in the medical profession it seems to be mostly accurate.
Now Yiz you do make a great statement about Terri needing to have her wishes in written form! Doctors, judges, and family are not mind readers. It is OUR OWN responsibility to make sure we have "living wills" and that we have let our loved one's know what we would want in the "what if" worst case scenario happened.
Also, I find the arguement of abortion and Terri to be uncomprehensible. Terminating a child before birth is denying that child a full and rich existence. Terri will never have anything remotely resembling a shear fragment of existence. We allow our own pets to die with dignity and grace when they are facing a terminal outcome. Why can you justify that in your mind, yet not allow a far more advanced life the same dignity and respect? Terri has been in this state for over a decade and a half. Not a year, not two years, but over a dozen years. She will not be recovering.
But I have heard the other arguement... "If only one life could be saved it would be worth it." This is a self serving arguement. I have to ask you if you drive a car? If everyone quit driving we could save over 40,000 lives EVERY YEAR. But does this stop you from driving? No! Also, if you are taking your position of keeping her alive and that doctors make life and death decisions based on monetary consideration you are correct. As cold as that may sound we must weigh the benefits of treatment vs. the outcome. As expensive as health care is would you like your premiums doubled to allow people like Terri to survive? If you are married w/ 2 children either you or your employer pays approx. $ 800 to $ 1000 a month for your healthcare. Would you like to pay that extra money each and every month for such "heroric" measures.
Also, I would like to point out the hipocrisy of your arguement. Keeping the body of Terri artificially alive could literally take away desperately needed monies from poor and indigent children who are fully functioning people who die every year because they didn't have the access to healthcare that they needed and deserved. "Heroric" measures are extremely expensive. So by keeping "alive" a person's brain stem in a persisten vegetative state would cause the death of 10's of others who need the healthcare that she is using. Which is more cruel? Can you honestly tell me that a kind, loving God would expect and want his people to live like that? I don't think so.
So while you may fault the medical professionals, it is not our faults. We are not perfect, we PRACTICE medicine. We do our best. We did not create sickness and death. We simply do our best to beat it back a few years, or to allow our patients a fuller life to spend with their loved ones. But we ALL die. Each one of us needs to make sure we are living our lives to the fullest extent possible so that "heaven forbid" our life is snuffed out tomorrow we can say we did the best we could with the limited time we had." -

First off I'm not a lawyer, but you are an employee of the county pledged to protect all civilians, organizations, and businesses of that said county. Haven't you suffered enough damage from the borg. I don't see your boss being very helpful. Don't sacrifice your job for them. Go picket in another county to have your say. Remember there is a time and a place for everything under the sun. Your 1st responsibility is to protect your mental, physical, and emotional well being. I don't see by pushing the limits in your job you are accomplishing any of those goals, but maybe I'm wrong.

There seems to be a fair bit of "blaming" others on this thread. People seem to be angry at others who went thru the growing up years in the borg. Can you honestly say that certain people who were children at the time should be held accountable for how they made it through the mental cruelty and self hating period of "teenagedom" in the borg?!? It's like certain Jews blaming other Jews for certain behavior during the holocaust. DO NOT FORGET WHO CAUSED THE PAIN FOR ALL OF US..... THE SOCIETY..... not each other. Everyone was trying to do their best to get thru that period and beyond. I remember things I did when I was 14, 15, 16 and look back knowing they were probably not right but was taught they were ok behaviors.... marking, avoiding contact, "cliques". So until you've walked a mile in someone else's shoes don't assume to know what their circumstances may have been.
I remember the smugness of going door to door with a few elders in our congo. They would get a dismissive, "I'm not interested" from a householder and we'd be walking back to the car and those elders would say "Well I guess Jehovah can put that person in the goat category". It's that smugness that today still makes me sick to my stomach.
The BORG would call us teachers..... but any good teacher ..... myself included will tell you that you consistently learn new things from your students. Can anyone here tell me that they really ever tried to learn something from one of their door to door experiences? I was taught to "overcome objections" and lead the householder to "my point I wanted to make".

This is my first post to this site. I "slipped" away about 15 years ago when I was 23..... Of course it was planned. I moved 1/2 across the country so I could start fresh and taper off so as not to get d'fed or whatnot. I was raised in "the truth" so really didn't have a choice as to my survival. I opted to lead the "double life"...and I was VERY good at it. So I didn't get the social retardation as such with this scenario. However, I held EVERYONE at arms length knowing that they could not be trusted....for at any moment they would "sin" themselves and turn me in for something far less serious. I was an elder's child. I knew everything that went on behind closed doors. Who was having problems, what those problems were, and how superior we all were for not having those kind of family issues. "Private reproof" in the Jo Ho (aka Borg) is laughable. The whole congregation / circuit knew about it in under a week. This taught me well in the art of deception. Now I know some of you will say I was a hippocrite and you may be right. But when you are 13 and a circuit overseer asks you if you are going to pioneer when you get out of high school and from your prior experience know that if you say "If Jehovah wills" it will effectively stop the interegation in under 5 minutes, why on Earth would you tell him the truth of, "No I want to go to college so that I can learn medicine to help people" The last time I "spoke my mind" about my future I ended up in two elder's meetings trying to "build me up spiritually" for hours on end. UGH! Add to the fact that I am gay growing up gay in the Witness belief structure. So I digress.... While I didn't suffer social retardation as the original thread described, I have struggled for many years throwing off the other social retardation of not trusting ANYONE including my mate. With many years of patience he knows when I shut down and don't talk or give an answer isn't fully honest just to not bear the unpleasantness of honest communication. That is where I feel the most damage comes from. We never truly have that feeling of "unconditional" love in the borg. It is always conditiona on the basisl that we are "playing our part".
