  What the Quest for the Historical Jesus Missed

  as part of my journey into scrutinising the evidence for and against the reliability of the gospels, i've just finished reading "a new perspective on jesus - what the quest for the historical jesus missed" by james d.g.

  dunn (phd, university of cambridge).

  (have so far also read n t wright's "who was jesus" - and now making my way through "the incredible shrinking son of man" by r m price - so far it's disappointing.

  The argument of "establishment" (i.e. if it is authentic it will survive) works to a degree. I would have to add that most people who set out to "authenticate" or "denigrate" have a preconcieved notion which they are attempting to validate. Would an ex JW or any other ex fundamentalist who has been tragically mistreated by a bible thumping cult be able to objectively consider the subject? I know I would not have been as I had a lot of egotistical reasons to "debunk" for many years. At this point in life, it reminds me of arguing how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.

  any one want to talk

  i was a jw and i d/a myself.. i have sinced married and had two wonderful kids, my parents are still jws, and hardly ever see my kids.

  i do not regret d/a myself,my parents are the ones missing out on their grandkids,.

  i was accused of doing something and the brothers acted like they did not believe me, i told them that the only ones who mattered,was me the other person and god.

  Welcome to the forum.. For what it's worth, as the one of seven boys, I was beaten to the point of hardly being able to walk when our father was turned loose on us. OUr mother was equally violent given to hitiing us with anything she could get her hands on. I was the only one to confront the violence at age 14 and backed down my father who thought he would beat me for skipping out on the Sunday Watchtower study and public meeting. Two days later I left home permanently and was eventually DF'd for "disobedience to my parents". I'm sure the congregation servant got the "whole story"

  Until I left the Witnesses, I beleived that corporal punishment was thee Christian way of life and "of God"! What a load of crap!

  I hope you stay around and share more with us. It sounds like you've done well with your life.

  What to believe in?

  i've seen that question pop up here on jwd in one form or another over the past few years and it's always had me mentally juggling whether to indulge in chrisitanity (the bible), churches, agnosticism, new age crapola or atheism or some other form of religious hype.......before today.. for some reason, i've chosen just today to believe in myself.

  i don't hide from myself i know what i'm capable of and how to do all of which i am capable and am willing to do.

  i'm also dependable and if i don't have an answer for a question that i need the answer to, i do some research and find out the facts.

  Believing in oneself? What does that mean in the context of the JW question about "where to go" with ones belief system? The two are not mutually exclusive. I believe in myself regardless of what my cosmology is regarding the role of religion and any specific cast of characters that world view engenders. I don't see how believing in "oneself" addresses other issues that transcent ones self worth.

  i sent my mum an e-mail the other day to let her know about steve irwin's tragic accident.

  this morning i got her reply:he will thrive in the new system when he will be able to get up close and personal with all wild creatures without fear.

  tis really sad as he was a good genuine man.. .

  Starting ones own religion would be an obvious option for JWs, considering the borg was a human invention made up of vain imaginations of self agrandizement by the likes of Da Judge and his for-runner Chucky Russell. It's like the Apostle Paul falling off his ass onto his anterior anatomy, having a vision and claiming divine inspiration. That event established the philosophical groundwork for thousands of wantabees to claim they too have a direct line to the Man Upstairs. (aka gov bod)

  i don't know about you guys, but i never pray before eating and never pray before going to bed.. first of all i like a hot meal, so i don't pray before eating, and i also never pray before going to bed, because i might fall alseep before i say amen.

  how odd.

  i was at a store (national chain).

  i was walking in think how nice it is not to feel guilty about taking my child to school for an activity on a tuesday night and not feeling guilty because it is book study night.. and i ran into two friends from the hall.
