Now, now...as someone who studies other cultures I see this whole issue a bit differently. Any sort of religious rite has its own meaning and context. The JW memorial observance always felt very sacred and meaningful to me despite the fact that I wasn't partaking. I always had the sense that all of us were communing with god as it were--partakers and non-partakers alike. But man were those memorial talks boring as hell, lol.

Just followed a link to this thread from an ex-JW blog. Great research, very informative. A couple of minor points I'd like to make:
1) The Greek word idou "behold!" in Jude 14 is of course a verb so it cannot be vocative, which is a case pertaining to nouns and adjectives. I believe you meant to say it's an imperative.
2) I think that the term "seventh from Adam" would naturally include Adam, in which case Enoch would indeed be the 7th rather than the 6th of the line. I've seen this sort of reckoning of ordinal numbers quite a bit in classical literature.

Is It Entrapment?
by minimus inin columbus ohio it is not against thye law for a woman to sunbathe topless in a city park.
recently, a firefighter walked by a woman who was sunbathing topless and they began talking.
she playfully put her foot on his body and then asked him if he would show her his penis.

Wow--yeah if SHE asked him to whip it out then it is entrapment. Case should be dismissed and all the officers involved ought to be sanctioned IMO.

You just can't reach some people-they just don't get it!
by dawg inhey guys, album is going great so far... i hope we can finish it in 2008, around may or june.
anyway, i just had a thought which made me stop in for a while.
i was discussing something with a friend the other day, i hadn't even started speaking nor had i brought up the core of my point before he started screaming like some wild manaic; he started making up "straw man" arguments one after the other ad infinum, yelling like a banshee and accusing me of all sorts of thoughts that i don't believe... it was really bazarre.

You can't reason with emotion. Until a person is ready themself to take a critical look at "the truth" they are emotionally committed to it and will never agree with any criticism of it no matter how "logical" or "reasonable."

NWT? Why a different bible?
by 4mylove inwhat is the common justification given by witnesses as to why they have a different bible?
a friend once told me that it was because the other versions of bibles weren't translated accurately and things had been changed.
at this though, she also told me that should i decide to study, i could use my own bible.

The JWs often say that they can prove what they believe from any bible. Thing is, they can't and so won't use any other bible to prove their beliefs.
JWs used KJ translation to "prove" their beliefs for years and many still use it in service to persuade those who trust nothing else.
Also, I once again ask any who fault the NWT rendering of John 1:1 to explain to me why the Greek CAN'T be rendered "the word was a god." I'm here to tell you that is a perfectly legitimate translation, but I'll gladly listen to counter-arguments.
As someone pointed out, insertion of Jehovah in many passages of NT is probably the most blatant manipulation of JWs in NWT.

RIDICULIOUS TRANSLATIONS IN THE NWT
by badboy inapart rom job 6;6., has there been other ridiculious ranslations?

John 1:1, I can't remember the particulars, but I think the jest of it is that it was altered somewhat to make it seem less trinitarian? And that Johannes Grebbles(?) some spiritist was consulted, or had a part in the translation and alteration of John 1:1.
I'm going to slightly disagree with this one. On the one hand, the JW translation is clearly influenced by their theology. On the other hand, the meaning of the Greek is very unclear and I don't think their translation can be dismissed out of hand as "wrong," at least not by means of the Greek alone.
In other words, "the word was God," and, "the word was a god," seem equally plausible translations to me. The deciding factor would be context. Thus, trinitarians would obviously insist on the former whereas JWs would insist on the latter--both claiming context to support their translation.

There probably is but as someone who has studied ancient Greek I want to offer the opinion that the NWT of the NT is actually quite good in general. Probably the biggest legitimate gripe is the inserting of "Jehovah" where there is no evidence for it. Also a few doctrinally influenced passages could be enumerated, but you could say the same thing about other translations as well.

I'll second Gordon Lightfoot and you could probably throw Ralph McTell into the conversation as well.
