My first experience at KH

thank you to all of you who commented yesterday.

no doubt you gave me an accurate description of what to expect.

when i first walked in, i was greeted by the jw who calls on my house.

A different elder came up for the Watchtower Study along with a young man to do the reading. I was surprised that the elder suggested that people should stay for the study. Did that really need to be said?

Yeah. They do that. It's weird. They like to say they have "four meetings" (previously five) 'meetings' each week, even though there's only really two (previously three) actual gatherings. Particularly with the 'Public Talk', the implication is supposed to be that there may be lots of 'visitors' who would otherwise only stay for the 'first' 'meeting'. However, the audience is usually almost entirely composed of JWs who already expect to stay for 'both' 'meetings', and visitors wouldn't generally make the distinction of a separate 'meeting' anyway.

Fading fast children are starting to ask questions, need help.

ok i have been fading fast, missed a lot of meetings over the past couple of months and the kids think its mostly do to my being busy with work.

this morning was probably the first sunday that i was home and could go but did not.

so my 8 year old asked me if i was going and why when i said no.

You feel the need to defend your actions to an 8-year-old because you don't want to go to some religious services?!

Child: Why aren't you going to the meeting?

Father: I don't want to.

Child: [Any follow-up question]

Father: When you're an adult, you can make your own decisions too.

When the child is mature enough (ages vary), maybe show the child that JW beliefs are rubbish. Start here.

I disagree. Officially you are right, ofcourse. But that's one of the doctrines with which I disagreed and which was not very important to me. So, I was a happy witness by not acceptating all the teachings. Just don't talk about it to loudly.

You've only confirmed my point. If someone cares about doctrine, they - by necessity - can't just disregard the ones they don't like. If they can simply disagree with some doctrines and continue as members, then they don't really care about doctrine. And in both cases, unless they are uninformed, they don't really care about truth if they remain JWs.

So my advice to Corboy10: make a list with doctrines. Which doctrines are (according to you!) important, and which less important?

One JW doctrine is that you can't just 'pick and choose' which doctrines you like. So if you want the option of choosing JWs on the basis of just a few JW doctrines, then JWs isn't the religion for you.

If a highly regulated schedule and rigid set of rules helps regiment your life and make things more stable for you, and you don't care much about whether what is taught is actually true, and you have no problem trying to convince others that it is true without any actual proof, then maybe JWs is the religion for you.

Corboy101, if you are only interested in doctrine, then you need to know that JWs are wrong.

Their beliefs are predicated on assumptions about 'invisible' things that supposedly happened in 1914.

Their selection of 1914 is based on their assertion that Jerusalem fell in 607 BCE. That assertion is entirely false.

Read Jeremiah 25:12. What is the order of events given there? What happens after 70 years ends. When did that happen?

I can't find any bibles...seems to be a shortage...

i have been trying to get 4 bibles for some folks i know who use to be jw's...not sure if they are returning but i'll do my part...can anyone shed some light or let me know where i can call to get bibles....patterson says there is a shortage, i've asked around to different halls in different states.. could it be because of jw.org ?.

I have no idea what VAT4956 means, I do recall Lars, going on about it.

VAT 4956 is a Babylonian cuneiform tablet (an astronomical diary) housed in a museum in Berlin, indicating the relative positions of various astronomical bodies in the 37th year of Nebuchadnezzar II. (VAT = Vorderasiatische Abteilung Tontafeln = "Department of Near Eastern clay tablets" )

The footnote in the article in The Watchtower (15 November 2011) claims, "the cuneiform signs for many of the planeteray positions are open to speculation and to several interpretations".

This raises the question, Are any of the planets located in 'the Swallow' for their required date in 588 BCE?

Someone on the forum says:

Thankfully we know that things like this are always dealt with judicially in our organization - other churches take no action against average members.

But the news article says the person was an "usher", which would make the abuser a ministerial servant.

Not to mention the fact that all baptised JWs are supposedly 'ordained ministers' and that JWs supposedly 'have no clergy class'. Except when convenient.

Would YOU force blood on a Witness?

i was recently chastised here for saying that i respected my wife's steadfast loyalty to her god.

suppose you were a medical assistant and your doctor/supervisor told you to hang blood on a witness patient?

I'm not sure that the witnesses' proselytism matters regarding whether or not others should allow them some freedoms as to their own medical care.

Maybe you should clarify the initial question. I don't see any problem with medical personnel following a direction by their supervisors to administrator any particular beneficial treatment. Or should the administering staff check every decision or diagnosis made by doctors to make sure the patient agrees? If I go to hospital, I can't just tell the attending nurse to administer whatever treatment I decide on. It sounds like your beef is really with the doctors.
