to the aussies out there what do you think of the government policy to send asylum seekers to png and have them settle there if they are proven to be refugees and if not to be sent home or to a third country.

i believe this policy will definately stop the boats.

As I said before asylum seekers could board a plane and fly to Sydney without problem because the Australian visa wouldn't be checked at departure. At Sydney airport they would ask for refugee statis and Australian officials would have to investigate to determine refugee statis. The reason this approach is not popular is because at departure their passport and boarding pass would be checked nothing more. An asylum seeker holding a passport is at a great dissadvantage because checks can then be made of that persons claims.

What's your source of information about asylum seekers? A comic book?

What makes you imagine that all asylum seekers even have a passport?

It takes long enough to get one in Australia. Do you really think it would be easy to get one in a warzone?

i always wondered how a man with a travelling companion of two like timothy managed to knnow or hear about all his churches.

how exactly does the troubles of corinth manage to find paul when hes over in judea or maybe somewhere in what we call turkey ?

Exactly. Some people seem to put on their politically selective rose-coloured glasses when looking at these issues. 'Boat people' didn't magically stop coming under Howard, and there are much more complex international factors at play. Do people really imagine that asylum seekers are jumping on the internet to see which political party is in power?

The Aborigines were more likely land bridge people. But they also arrived into Australia through Indonesia. Just a very long time ago.

just mulling over the demise of religion in general as we humans progress away from fear of the unknown.. i was wondering when some country or group will try to outlaw religion.

then i recalled how an all out attack on religion is what is supposed to trigger armageddon.

after 9/11 the first thing george bush said was that islam is not the problem, extremist terrorists are the problem.

It would hardly be a first, would it. But there's 'very little' reason (i.e. no reason) to imagine 'scripture' refers to anything at all in the present day.

There are people who beleive Babylon the Great is the USA.

That doesn't surprise me in the least.

I neither agree or dissagree with that assessment.

Are you suggesting that the version Ezra gives must be the 'correct' one? Since neither affects the timing, the only reason to do so is on the presumption that 'the Bible' is magical.

Of course, going by either source there's no reason to place Cyrus' decree any later than around his accession in Nisan of 538. The Nabonidus Cylinder associates the decree with around the time of him taking the throne, and a comparison of Ezra and Josephus agrees.

In your article, you claim:

Ezra would use the Tishri calendar for the king of another nation, regardless of the system in use by that kingdom.

There is no good reason for this assumption. It can be established mathematically that the authors of 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles and Jeremiah use Nisan-based years for kings of Israel and Tishri-based years for kings of Judah (using decision tables). In view of the fact that Ezra would be even more influenced by Babylonian culture, it would not be expected at all that he would use Tishri-based years for Babylonian rulers.
