is this not the relgion of jehovahs witnesses?..

look in the bible itself it says in john 15:18-19. jesus says, "if the world hates you, you know it has hated me before it has hated you.

Fair enough Terry, but one cant help but wonder if you are equally open to the possibility that leprechauns, Santa Clause, The Great Pumpkin and Peter the Rabbit exist? There is as much evidence for these literary creations as there is for god, also a literary creation and social construction.

Given that you are cognizant that the psychological vacuum you feel after giving up the belief in god is, at its core, an emotional rather than logical reaction, I cant help but wonder why one would bother to seek out "evidence" for a hypothetical being? Worse, why one would "read as much religious literature" as one can, given that these subjective reports can not and will not ever prove the case either way? There either is a god, or there is not. The middle ground is simply a state of willful denial.

Curious on beliefs

i have been researching a particular subject lately and have been wondering how different religous groups feel about it.

the rh factor, of course this is a protein found in the blood of at least 85% of the population, the name coming from the discovery (the same factor found in rhesus monkey blood, 1940-landsteiner and wiener).

during pregnancy if a mother is negative (does not have the factor) and the father is positive, and the baby is positive, there is a possiblity that the mother's body will reject the baby.

you might want to try something like "The New England Journal of Medicine" or "Lancet". At the very least, try a PubMed online search for this topic,

its free. Just google "Entrez Pubmed".

News - Neanderthal DNA 99.5% Like Ours

just recently, some scientists managed to sequence neanderthal dna.

while this discovery is not totally explored at this point, the following data are quite solid.. using different techniques, two teams of scientists separately sequenced large chunks of dna extracted from the femur of a 38,000-year-old neanderthal specimen found in a cave [image] 26 years ago in croatia.

one team sequenced more than one million base pairs and the other 65,000 pairs of the genome.. .

Second school "in the back." Is this the JW version of the short bus?

some congos stage a second school in the baby room while the main hall is used for the big boy school.. i've noticed (and voiced to the school overseer last night) that only the "popular" jws are used in the main school while the ones with problems always get stuck in the back.

he confirmed that this was planned, and that it was to avoid embarrassing certain brothers and sisters who might be uncomfortable in front of a larger group.

seems pretty loving to me as long as you don't mind that the dozen moms with 30 or so kids have to wait outside in the cold periodically because the room built and designed specifically for them is in use.. actually if they can't stand listening to some people and feel the need to stick them in the back rather than give them full participation rights, then maybe it's time to re-think the whole deal.. forgot: he referred to the main hall school as "the a team".

Ah, the dreaded second school! Indeed, in our hall, the second school was the JW version of the short bus. In another sense it was the JW version of the "GONG SHOW".....

They would typically assign "brothers" or "sisters" with poor english skills, extremely nervous or the just plain weird and creepy ones to this school, which was tucked away in the

basement and always 10 degrees colder than the rest of the hall!

I used to ALWAYS go down to the second school when they would separate the upstairs and downstairs schools simply because it gave me chance to walk downstairs and break the

mind-numbing monotony of the "upper" chamber. Public speaking at its worse! LOL....

Witness mother's and jealousy towards their daughters...

ladies, growing up, did you ever feel that your mother resented or was jealous of you?

whenever i would get a compliment from someone, especially males, she would always find someway to turn right around and insult me in front of everyone.

we were at dinner one time with the co and he told me that i was a very beautiful young lady.

Holy begeezuz Jojo, sorry for saying this but your mother sounds like a monster! Who does that to their own child? I'm speechless! That is just sooooo f**ked up! I dont know

if that even qualifies as "jealousy" so much as sociopathic cruelty!

From my experience, I didnt personally know any JW mothers that behaved this way, however, most were control freaks. I was lucky that my Mom always went out of her way to build our self-confidence.

Nicotine gum?

i just had a thought about nicotine gum.. let me preface this by saying that i have never smoked.

and i don't intend to start.

however i am intrigued with the "medicinal" effects of chewing nicotine gum: it's a stimulant, it decreases appetite, it is reputed to temporarily give you a bit of a jump start like caffeine does.. i'm surprised that there is no rule on this in the wt, because someone can buy the gum without a prescription, but because you aren't "smoking" the nicotine into your system, how would anyone know the difference in appearance between seeing someone using regular chewing gum or the same person chewing nicotine gum, unless you saw the packaging?.

The problem with the gum (and especially since they have made this OTC) is that often times chain smokers will combine cigarettes with the gum! A frightening thought indeed, yet I know at least 5 smokers that regularly do this, with no intention of quitting, simply getting a partial fix in between smokes! LOL.

Having said that, nicotine in and of itself does have beneficial effects. It is a protective factor in Parkinsons disease because it tends to sensitize the dopamine system in the substantia nigra and globus pallidus, which suffer dopamine degradation during Parkinsons.

There is some evidence that neuroleptically medicated schizophrenics smoke to alleviate the cognitive and motor impairments related to antipsychotic meds. Whatever the case, those of us in the field are finding that we can modulate how nicotine is motivationally perceived simply by manipulating certain brain receptor systems. For example, blocking dopamine strongly increases nicotine's rewarding and addictive properties. Blocking alpha-7 nicotinic receptors can switch nicotine from a reward signal to an aversive signal. Bottom line, within a few years, we will be able to control nicotine's psychological and motivational properties with simple pharmacological treatments that dont "substitute" for nicotine, which overall, has proven to be as bad a treatment option, as 'methadone'.

Athiests are in a literal sense enjoying REAL freedom, whether that is right at the moment i'm not sure but i can only respect them as they go about their lives without some kind of REWARD and without someone to lean on when things do go wrong, they are forced to accept responsibility. Pretty big if you ask me.

Thank you KW, that was brilliantly expressed! Gordon, you have a lot to learn from this young man.

KW brings up a central point. For most atheists, the rejection of the god hypothesis entails giving up a certain form of psychological anaesthesia. Instead of relying upon an empty sky for answers when our lives become difficult, we rely on our loved ones, fellow human beings for all the comfort or support we need. All of the atheists I know have a deep respect and love for HUMANITY.

Finally Gordon, let me tell you what my hope, as an atheist is: It is my hope that the human race will awaken from the blinding stupor of superstitious ignorance and accept the full potential of HUMAN life and freedom. While the religionists will continue to hide behind the apron strings of their fictional sky-deity, dreaming of some hypothetical "after-life" whilst avoiding the reality of THIS life (which is, in fact, all there ever is), I will continue to fully actualize my human life, expanding my intellectual and psychological potential, basking in the infinite wonder of the natural world around me and savouring each precious moment of this ephemeral existence. Eternity is stagnation and decay.....Eternity is for those too weak or frightened to live NOW........Eternity is the reward for a wasted human life.......only the strong can live for the moment and build a future that will gratefully house their accomplishments and legacies. Only the strong can die with courage and satisfaction after a life of true, self-actualization. Question your beliefs Gordon. You will quickly realize, if you can do this honestly, that your only motivation for god-belief is mortal "fear and trembling" to borrow a line from Kierkegaard. Lose fear, and you will lose god.
