i had a long discussion the other day with my new flatmate, who it turns out has studied with jws and thinks they're wonderful, about my view that being raised a jw is psychologically abusive.
being indoctrinated with the concept of jehovah killing people who don't do what he says and being scared of losing your friends and family if disobedient is, in my view, a very unhealthy thing for a child.
any thoughts?

i can remember being "beaten" for smoking as a teenager, after mother would smell smoke on my hands, by a father, who was "secretely" still smoking himself!.............abusive?..........the "loving" jw family?...........no way!

i have read a lot of text and story's about people that leave the jw's and this appears to be pretty much all that's being talked about.. i assume you believe that you have done right by your opposing stand to the jw's because you believe you have been done evil (or have seen jw's do evil) and probably right so.
do you people still pray to jehova and study the bible (on your own for once) as to get to know jehova's purpose for us?.
i wonder about this because i fear that you might "revert" back to the common western culture (assuming you live in one because you'r after all reading this over the internet) which i appal and detest in very many of its motivational aspects (that is, the motivations of its people) that are crudely speaking, selfish and ultimately, in the generations long run destructive.
Human (western) kind as i see it now is propelling itself to a very trying period because it is depleting the earth's natural resources and is disrupting the eco-system and so many things.
....uuuhhhh.....western world....what about china? last time i looked china was not in the western world. they use a lot of "natural resources" to take care of their very large population, growing "oil dependence" that rivals america's (western world).

i have been reading a book my hubby recommended to me- man's search for meaning - by viktor frankl.
very good book.
he is a survivor of nazi concentration camps and it's not just another grisly tale of horrors of cc life.

i have not been a witness in over 25 years, i have family members, father, 1 sister, that still are. the rest of my siblings ( 3 sisters,4 brothers) have chosen the "freedom' of not being jw's.it is a personal choice, as i have been told so many times. even when i was a jw, i didn't seem to belong......my mother, rest in peace, used to not allow us to associate w/ some of the jw kids 'cause they were "bad" influences. not being able to associate w/ worldly or jw people makes it hard to belong.
but, even though i have been "out" so long, it's not until the last couple of years that i have felt comfortable around "new" people. i have found that if i just be myself, be kind, listen,don't put on the fake fronts that are required by the jw's, that people are really pretty easy to get along with. most are good people that have insecurities, just as x-jw's, that want to have descent friends, that don't really expect too much out of you, unlike all the "friends" in the "organization" that "expect" & fake "perfect christianity."
my advice to you is be yourself, relax, be kind,generous & sincere, the "worldly" people are not the enemy as we were taught for so long.

a bit of background, i am a college educated young man (have a bs in psychology) and am currently a medical student.
I honestly take most of the stuff I study from the WTS as the most accurate (of all the other denominations).
you no doubt have only studied the last four years of The Bible or should i say "publications" from the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society. if you had been associated with the witnesses as long as some of us here, you could possibly see the cult like control they exercise over their followers. making being a "faithful witness" cumbersum with manmade rules that have nothing to do with one's faith in God or Jesus.

being a medical student, i take it you plan on being a doctor? how would you deal with a medical situation that, in your opinion, only a blood transfusion would safe a person from certain death?

in the first chapter of the book " what does the bible really teach " students are encouraged to be humble and ask questions until they find satisfying answers.
why then, did no one reveal to me the history of the wtbts before i became a baptized publisher?
why do we encourage those of other faiths to look into their religion objectivley and yet we are not allowed to do the same of ours?
welcome to the board " where it is not only o.k. to ask questions, but encouraged." these questions should be asked by all who even think about getting involved with Jehovah's Witnesses, before dedicating their life to the WTB&TS. notice i said a society, not God. by being baptized in this religion, you are not comitting to serving God & Christ, but to following the man made rules of a money making business, where you are not allowed to question their teachings, past or present, unless you want to be viewed as "weak in faith."
it is not your fault that you were not allowed to see things as they really are. take the time now to question all that you have been taught,as the bible encourages, do research,find what it is that makes your life fulfilling & stick with it. regardless of what someone says you need, only you know what makes your life what it should be.
