Huge shock!

i just got a major shock.

i can't believe the new levels of cruelty possible within families who are jws.. a friend on this board who i've known since i was a baby practically has managed to get me a picture of my little sister who i haven't seen for 8 years - the one who i've mentioned my dad said was working on the bethel quick build team.

the one who i've described my fears that she and my younger sister are staying single until armageddon.

You've gotten a lot of advice, and I know you're not responding to your dad's text message so far, but I just wanted to throw this out there: What if you responded by letting them know that you love them all very much but you are disappointed in them for supporting a teaching that you can show them, biblically, is wrong, and that their behavior disgusts you? The reason for such a message would be to let your dad know that shunning you will not ever have the desired effect, which of course is getting you to return to the WT. I'd hate for him to start thinking that this episode might be something that will push you toward returning.

I agree with the others here, you are such a wonderful person and you don't deserve this. Not from anyone, least of all your family. Wanna be sisters??

i was born into the organisation, in a family of twelve children.

married for 22 years with 6 kids of our own.

It Seems That My Children Are Not Trained

i just returned home from the kingdom hall.

i am an elder.. after the meeting all the elders were called to the back room.

i thought this was an impromptu elders' meeting.

I really feel for you and your family now. I am fading from the WT, but my husband is still in, and he is an elder.

The pressure the WTS puts on families is insane. I remember when my kids were 6 months and 2 years old, at the Memorial - they were both sick, my husband was passing the emblems, it was late and the kids were both screaming and I was exhausted myself..... Or at the district convention that summer when he was put in charge of one of the food booths, plus he was an attendant, and I hardly saw him for 4 days and had to drag my sleeping daughter to the mother's room so I could feed my son.... Or sitting through a seemingly endless meeting with two squirming kids and long to just get them home and to bed, and then to hear that there will be a 'brief' (HA!) elders meeting after the meeting - then trying to drag overtired kids out of bed the next morning for school.

If I were to try to calculate the number of hours I spent in service, at meetings, assemblies, plus personal study, plus getting the kids dressed and ready to go, plus travel time, plus the money spent in gas, etc etc etc....... And then to think that for all my time and effort, when I leave the WT for good, not one of the people who I have considered friends and have spent countless hours of my life with will even acknowledge my existence - it's such a waste that I can't even think about it. I feel sorry for my kids who have spent so much of their young lives sitting at the KH. I'm telling you all this because I have had doubts for about 10 years or more... but it's taken me this long to act on them. If you have doubts now, get out now!!!

I'm wondering how your wife feels about all this. Would she be ok with you leaving the JWs?

hi, i am willow tree.

i haven't been to a kingdom hall for 4 and a half years, i totally cut myself off from the jw's after their outright lack of love and concern for me while i was ill. all they cared about was getting me back to the hall, the fact i was sick made no odds to them.

a family member went apostate and has turned his back on jehovah.

he told us he is never coming back and i know he went and visited internet sites.

What Its All About - Lurkers

its all about lurkers: there are at least three main types of lurkers, 1. a jw with doubts, concerns, feeling that something is wrong with the religion, 2. an ex-jw who is caught between two worlds, and does not feel free yet to live a normal life, 3. a non-jw who is either involved with a jw, or a relative of a jw, or is in the middle of being studied with by the jws.. defining moments: everything we write, say, and do is observed by the lurkers.

in a single moment, or a series of collected comments, we will eventually cause a lurker to have a defining moment ... a point in time where they decide that being a jw is not for them anymore, or that they can stop living between two worlds, or cease studying, and not join the religion.

we may never know who we help, or how many.. flame wars and character attacks: when we get embroiled in these, whether we are the instigator or the brunt of the attacks ... what are we really doing?

The first time I accessed 'apostate' internet sites was in Feb. '05. I found JWD then, too, but I wasn't ready for it. My first impression was of a group of people dissatisfied with the WTS and complaining about it. At that time, I was looking for spirituality and the answer to the question, What does God want of me, what do I do now to serve him? I found ex-JW sites that mainly discussed deeper biblical topics, and that was enough for me at the time.

While I haven't reached any definate conclusions on my spiritual questions, after a while I became less obsessive about researching them. I needed to get on with my life and deal with the practical issues of leaving the JWs. JWD was one of the first places I returned to - about 6 months after I first found it. This site has become invaluable to me now, and I'm so grateful to everyone who contributes here, no matter what stage of exit or healing they are in.

My point is that everyone is different, everyone is at a different place in their life, and maybe JWD doesn't fill a need for all lurkers. Some people post here for a while and then move on. Some post here for years and years. And maybe some never need this place at all. It is what it is, a place for healing and for knowing that you aren't the only person who feels the way you do in the situation you're in. With that being said, though, I do think that common courtesy and respect is a no-brainer. But I don't think that people should avoid saying what's on their mind because lurkers might take offence. Saying what's on your mind and getting feedback on that is part of healing.

Just my two cents.

My kids loved this book! They read it so much that the cover started falling off, but I couldn't part with it and have saved it with some of their other favorite things. I always liked Grover. I remember the shape-guy too... he was so funny, I loved that sketch! The Swedish Chef from the Muppet Show was great - and I loved the guys in the balcony. Ah, memories.......
