my question may seem vague but if one decides to leave "the organization", why write a formal letter?
why not just leave and not have any further contact with the witnesses?
is there some legitimate legal reason for this or do people do this because the witness thinking has overtaken their logic?

That's exactly what I did. One of my best friends is df'd and has been celebrating her's and her children's birthdays for years, so I enlisted her and another non-JW friend to help me plan it. I didn't know when to sing happy birthday or when to cut the cake. It was funny! I know now, though.

Well, in that case, it seems that everyone can modify the rules to suit them. If I had refused to talk to the elders, and therefore never got df'd, my mother just might come to my wedding and reception if I were to get married. Just kidding. I'm so far removed and emotionally disconnected from my mother that it really doesn't matter to me anymore.

So in essence, she celebrated the wedding of someone who was raised a JW, but never chose to dedicate his life. Do you think she'll come to my wedding reception (her df'd daughter) if I get married? [This is a rhetorical question.]
What's the difference? I know that she can justify that he isn't df'd so she can support him, but my mother is an extremist. She watches my sister's 3 year old son and does not allow him to watch cartoons because they are not upbuilding. She didn't allow us to watch Scooby Doo as children. She doesn't think that my son should be a member of the local boys & girls club. But she can go a wedding reception of someone who does not want to be a JW.
Am I missing something?

I definetly plan on being more spiritual than religious. If I ever step foot in a religous place it will be non-denominational.StillAWitness, I feel the same way. I found a non-denominational church that basically teaches using the bible only. I have yet to hear anyone give personal opinions about how you should wear your hair or the way someone should dress. The sermons stick strictly with book, chapter, verse.

i've been thinking of you a lot, i've wanted to write you this for quite some time.
i guess we both know that things aren't the way they used to be-between you and i; between you and jehovah's organization-and i just want you to know how much i miss you.
You are right, it is mainly about THEM.
My mom once pleaded with me to return to the organization because people miss and love me. She basically told me that I was being selfish and not considering the feelings of others. I was taken aback and told her that I no longer felt that a group of men could judge me because they can't read my heart. I told her that I would not subject myself to that type of judgment again. She and my father paid me a visit to plead with me again to return to the organization. I told them both that I was not prepared to do that. In the past, I made all my spiritual decisions based on what others wanted me to do. Today, I won't make any spiritual decisions unless it's what I want. If it isn't in my heart to do what good will it be to me or anyone else for me to do it. They respected that statement, gave me a hug, told me they loved me and kindly left.
my 8-year-old son asked me yesterday if i liked going to the kh.
i told him "no, not really.
" he said that he doesn't really like to go all the time either, but we have to go if we want to get into paradise.. i allow him to go to the kh with my parents when he wants to because he does like to go.

That is more profound than you could ever know. That's what I want more than anything. I have always know even before I got baptized at 16 that I would not last in this org. I've always had this deep gut feeling that I would be considered apostate one day. But I just never saw myself here. Now, I finally see the light at the end of this long, dark menacing tunnel.
