Question for other Parents....
by rwagoner inhowdy all.... .
i have a 6 yo son who is in the first grade.
he was born 10 weeks preemie, was an only child up until about 6 months ago and spends a lot of time with adults - especially me...his goofy but loving dad.

First of all, I am not a parent, but I am a teacher. It is hard to say without actually knowing your kid, but I will say that it seems a lot of times labels are put on kids too quickly when they are simply just being a kid.
I would definitely listen to what they have to say about what they are seeing in your son at school, but I would think twice before letting them label him as anything, unless it (1) interfers with his learning or (2) interfers with the learning of others. If it doesn't, then they cannot say anything other maybe he's a little odd!
I have worked with a lot of kids, and I can tell you that some kids are just *weird*! They are still normal kids though when it comes to most things. Honestly, this may blow your head up even bigger about your son, but a lot of the behaviors you described (being glued to things he is interested in, obsessed with certain topics, adult talk, etc.) are indicative of gifted kids, and some gifted kids can be a little "strange"! (But in a good way!)

Jehovah's Witnesses and interracial marriage
by what_Truth? in*this is a bit of a riff off of bluegrass tom's post in the bible research forumn .
in my old hall we had three interracial couples.
in fact i didn't even realise that they were interracial until i was about 12. .

I think it is part of the JW culture now to be accepting of interracial couples.
My sister and brother-in-law are an interracial couple. They wed 15 years ago when we were living in the South! It was the talk of the town, so to speak, but it was still pretty much accepted. I think they must have been the first interracial marriage that JWs down there had ever seen! We had people come to the wedding that we had never even seen before, and there were three people who videotaped it ... and none of us ever received a copy!!!!!!!!!

Question for those raised a JW
by New Worldly Translation ini was wondering if anybody feels like i do that if i hadn't been raised a jw i would never have embraced the religion.
i know it's easier to say in hindsight after i know the truth about the org but honestly i don't think i would have given them the time of day.
i'm not a religious person or even a spiritual person and being a jw always caused a conflict in my mind.

Do you think if you had been raised as a worldly ? person you would have been attracted to the JW's or any religion when you grew up?
This is a hard question to answer because we will never know what kind of persons we would have become if we had not grown up in the organization. I know that is true for me.
I would like to think I definitely would not be attracted to the Witnesses because I always examine things closely before I buy in. (I am assuming I would still have this quality had I not been raised a JW.)
I am also fairly certain that I would be interested in some type of religion or God, although I do not know what that would be. I feel like I have been so poisoned against religion in general that I have no use for any of it now.

I found I had no problems with Witness teachings. I had a problem with behaviors. I listed those behaviors I saw first hand and made a permanent record of those.
That is exactly how it was with me! When I left, it was not because I no longer believed it was the truth. In fact, I believed it may still be the truth, I just didn't care! I left because of the behaviors and attitudes I saw within the organization while in my childhood all the way into my adulthood. In fact, when I was in the process of leaving, my mother played many mind games telling me that it meant my life and "did't I realize I was going to be destroyed?" I told her I didn't care! I didn't want to live forever!
It was only later that I began to research and discover the truth about "the truth"?. It is definitely a process and I struggled with the emotional turmoil of it all for probably at least a good year after I left. It does get better, though!

You are in a typical spot that most people find themselves in, Purplesofa! I hope it helps to know that there have been so many before you feeling the same emotional turmoil. I certainly did!
When I left (I faded also), there would be a few that when they saw me would give me a BIG hug and tell me how much they "missed me". I was always very nice and told them how much I missed them too, and we "should do lunch sometime" or something to that effect. The point I am making is that I left the door open for them to still remain my "friends" and to this date, no one has taken me up on it. I knew their friendship and love was conditional and that certainly proved it. They only missed me warming a seat in the Kingdom Hall. I think it is so sad how superficial those friendships were!
Nowadays when I see Witnesses that I use to go to the hall with, some will turn the other direction and not even speak "hello" to me. Others will ask me how I have been and act cordial, so it all depends on the individual, I guess.
I know it is tough, but hang in there and be true to yourself! One day, this will be a tiny blip on your radar of life!

How long was it before you used Theospeak?
by truthseeker intheospeak is the language of dubs.. from pioneer to ministerial servant, from hours to service years, from magazines to books.
witness publications are full of loaded langauge and that special tongue called "theospeak".
is he in the truth?.
-
Wild_Thing
I was probably speaking "theospeak" before I could wipe my own butt! I still catch myself using it every now and then. I think it must be harder to shake if it was your "first language".
They refer to people who have English as a second language as learning ESOL (English as a Second Oral Language). I think it only appropriate to refer to folks like you who learmed Theocratese later in life as having TSOL!
By the way, I think this might be website someone was referring to:

New CO final Talk
by stillajwexelder inanybody heard this new talk going around at the moment - it is the last talk on sunday afternoon and it is about depression?
-
Wild_Thing
Depression has been a MAJOR problem in the organization for many years. I'm amazed it has taken them so long to address this issue.
I highly doubt that they address this issue appropriately. They haven't until now, and I have no faith that they ever will. They will continue to blame the high rate of depression and suicide in the organization on allowing Satan and his Demons? and the Wicked System of Things? to cause their depression and it will not get better unless they stay close to Jehovah? and his Organization? and get to all the meetings and go out in field service and do personal study and personal prayer and ..... yada yada yada!
I am sure they will mention that some have to take a little pill and that it is okay if they have to, but I doubt their level of addressing it goes beyond that!
P.S. Thanks to those in chat that showed me how to do the little ? sign! Alt + 0153 rocks!
