  suicide and explosion at Kingdom Hall on Sat. July 27

  a bizarre explosion at a church east of kansas city killed one man on saturday afternoon.

  atf agents said the explosion at the jehovah's witness' kingdom hall on foggy bottom drive was intentionally set, and that the person who died appears to have committed suicide.

  witnesses described large amounts of smoke pouring out of the building, which they said was just recently completed.

  The name was released today. I heard he shot himself in the bathroom. He torched the place and then ran to the bathroom to kill himself. Odd and tragic. He did go by Ed, so I assume his middle name is Edward. http://www.kansascity.com/news/breaking_news/story/727229.html

  Man killed at site of Bates City fire identified

  Authorities today disclosed the identity of the man who died in a Saturday explosion and fire at a Jehovah’s Witnesses hall near Bates City.

  Authorities said Ralph E. Phillips, 53, of Buckner died of what they believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials have concluded that accelerant had been poured throughout the hall and then ignited.

  was this just taking place in really small congregations?

  i mean, i know the philosophy behind it; my mom would put a hat on to pray in front on my "unbelieving" dad.

  In the congregation I grew up in, Kleenex were only used as a last result when Dairy Queen napkins were not available! Then one year, the visiting circuit overseer put a stop to the practice and the ladies went out and bought a nice silk scarf to keep at the back of hall.

  And I remember hearing Bethel being called "Mother" too. In fact there was a circuit overseer that even called it the mother ship. This was back in the early 80s.

  Watching that made me sick and very angry! I cannot BELIEVE he likened going to college to someone putting a gun to their head and trying to kill themselves.

  He told the "experience" of a man with obsessive compulsive disorder who attempted suicide by shooting himself. He survived and was cured of the OCD because of the part of his brain that the bullet pierced. He asked, "but would you recommend other people shoot theirselves in the head? Other people go to college and also survive, but would you recommend other people go to the college?"

  How ignorant!! What is wrong with those people? Fifteen years ago they lightened the restrictions enough to where I was able to go to college, and now it seems like it is getting worse than it ever was when I was a kid. Good grief! My poor neices and nephews! Their only prospect for a career is cleaning houses and washing windows!

  while talking to a jw elder: if you specifically state that you are speaking to him as and elder, and that you want the conversation to be classified.

  is he legally required to keep it secret, like a church confessional or doctor/patient type thing?.

  i found this article on the brookly daily eagle website reminiscing about this scandal.

  evidently, the newspaper outed him on this scheme and printed a cartoon of russell and his miracle wheat, and so russell sued them and lost!

  iRIVER versus iPOD a Discussion

  i've owned two different ipods including the video ipod.. i own two different iriver products including the new iriver clix2 (mp3 player, video player, digital recorder and fm radio.).

  to me the iriver is the clear winner on all fronts.

  (cheaper, too).. briefly: iriver allows multiple file formats and drag and drop file use.

  iRIVER is the best. The price is good, the performance is great! And mine runs on a simple AA battery. My iRIVER has plenty of disk space, radio, a radio recorder with a timer (so you can record shows like you would your VCR), a voice recorder, and even holds tiny little pictures if I want it to. You can't beat that!

  The only reason people buy an iPOD is for the accessories.
