Man, I got some of those e-mails too, and the first one nearly got me. I was just about to put in my info when I noticed that the address bar changed and I got suspicious. Those bastards must be cleaning up on that scam. My parents, who are not up on too much technical stuff, called me when they got that e-mail for help on how to respond. They had no idea it was not for real. Whoever perpetrates that crap should be flogged in public.

Weekly Bible Reading Nov. 7, 2005
by TheListener inas most know the society assigns 3 or 4 chapters a week for bible reading.
some of us who have believing mates see them reading this each and every week.
i encourage it because reading the bible, in my opinion, is a good thing.

I think this is a great idea. Sort of the counterpart to the bible highlights part at the hall. It drives me nuts because as you probably know they ask for comments on the bible reading at the end of that part, and all everybody does is look for any little tidbit in the reading that fits in with current jw thinking. It would be nice to hear some balanced comments on the reading for a change!

Anyone experienced the private Kingdom Schools?
by Sheepish ini was a teacher for the first year of a newly organized "kingdom school", in 1977.
(i was young!
) this was a private school for jw's kids.

MrHartPhx, actually the school is still in existence and has been this whole time. what happened was they were forced into making it a charter school which means they have to accept kids that are not jws and I don't think they can openly teach just the jw theology, but I'm not sure completely what the rules are now. All I know is that it is now located near Central Ave and Indian School Road, and it is still called New World Educational Center. My sister attended the school growing up. I know several people who teach there. They do not have to have a college education to teach there! Also, it was very true in the beginning (maybe still) that parents sent their "problem" children to the Witness school, so what it turned into was a bunch of witness kids who were bad news compared to a good old regular school. Kids went to the witness school and learned worse habits than if they were left alone. It was pretty crazy. It was also in a terrible, unsafe neighborhood, which always bothered me.

Bravo, Lilycurly. I thought your letter was well written and you did a good job. Even though he gave you the standard answers, you never know when he will recall what you pointed out to him. Now that I am questioning things and not afraid to look at both sides, I am remembering a thousand different arguments that I heard against the witnesses when I was a kid and immediately dismissed. Funny thing, I retained those things for some reason and now many of them fit into place.
It is really hard to stand up and give a reason for how you feel, but if enough of us do it, who knows what might happen!

Thanks for the link, that is great stuff. I thought the interviewer tried really hard to play devil's advocate(har har) but just kind of showed that there is no basis for a lawsuit; all of the reasons the society is using can be shot down easily.
Peter Mosier is great in my opinion because he displays a perfect calm and reasonable manner, thus blowing away the angry apostate stereotype that the society always tries to portray.
Thanks again for posting this info.

Why stay married to a JW?
by kid-A inhaving read a recent thread on "mixed" marriages between active jws and non-jw (either faders or df'd) two things stood out for me.
first, there was a profound underlying sadness on the part of the non-jw poster (as there may also be on the active jw mates part) on the reduced intimacy of the relationship, both mentally and physically.
not being in this situation, but understanding what makes a marriage successful, i cant help but ask a rather harsh question....can anybody in this situation realistically envision how such a marriage can last in the long term?.

Personally, I try hard not to resent my wife for being a jw, because I am the one who has changed since we got married. Originally, we were both active in the religion. As much as I now understand and don't agree with the organization, I try to remind myself that I can't expect everyone to change with me at my pace. We have done very well so far, with just a couple bumps. I found out early not to try to force her to agree with me, just let her figure things out at her own speed(good advice I got on this board). Besides, the major problem I have with the jws is exactly that; they want to force everyone to think a certain way without allowing for individuality.
We even discussed it at one point; my wife said she would not give me a hard time about staying home from the meetings, and all she asks is that I give her the same consideration and do not make it hard for her to go. I thought that was reasonable. I'm just mostly worried that the brothers will try to take the "he's endangering your spirituality" tack with her, but it hasn't happened yet. I think maybe one reason we are doing ok is that my wife has immediate family who left the organization in their teens, and she refuses to believe that they will be killed in armageddon. The fact that she is willing to believe differently than what the society says is encouraging to me.
I can't speak for everyone else, but I definitely have no desire to get out of my marriage even though she is an active jw. Time will tell whether or not it works out, but we have a good relationship even with this huge difference.

Can someone help me decide what to do?
by Kaylen incan someone give me some feedback on what they would do in this situation:.
last weekend my best friends husband told me that three years ago he caught (and spied on for about half an hour) my husband and my very best friend "getting hot and heavy" (his words) in our spa and that he watched them because "he found it hot".
the three of them decided that they would not tell me and kept it a secret for the last three years until he told me (because he was drunk at the time).

Yeah, I agree with daystar. Us guys are just all sneakin' around like dogs. Seriously, don't forget the female friend is guilty as well. I think the most disturbing part is everyone's reaction after you found out. It would be one thing if they screwed up, then fessed up and felt terrible about it, but to put it back on you tells me that they wouldn't feel bad if it happened again. I have known people who used alcohol as an excuse for doing things they would never do sober, and I avoid them like the plague. In my mind, they basically use the alcohol to give them the courage to do the crap they want to do deep down.
I'm not saying don't forgive, but I definitely wouldn't put up with being brushed off about it. Make all parties involved fess up to you and be honest, and make them do it sober!!

JWs show up at my dad's surgery.
by Darth Yhwh inheres a little background: my mother is a jw, my father is not, my sister is disfellowshipped and i have faded away.. my father has an abdominal aortic aneurism.
this is a weak spot on the wall of the major artery leading to the lower extremities.
it will balloon out and burst eventually killing him without assistance.

Darth, I'm sorry for what you went through. You should feel good that you were there for your family regardless of how anyone else acted. At least you always know that you can control what you do. Unfortunately, if your mom is active at the hall, she probably does not have that same kind of freedom. Don't forget how they say over and over at the meetings how loyalty to Jehovah(er, the organization) comes before loyalty to family. That can really mess with a persons head. Deep down I'm sure she knows well that you and your sister are more important than anyone at the hall, but she faces a huge social pressure to act the same as everybody else.
I was intrigued by the military comment, because I have been using that analogy to my parents in another way. They defended the religion by saying that it has changed a lot of people's lives for the better, people who were once drug users or in trouble with the law, etc. I maintain that is only true because of the high control aspect of the religion. Some people cannot or will not use any self control or think for themselves, and those individuals may do better as a jw because there is so much constant contact and pressure to be a certain way. Likewise many straighten their life up by joining the military. It's just a matter of handing over the control of their life to somebody else. It doesn't mean the religion is true, it just means that some people benefit by being told what to do all the time. To me, the religion is like a social military. The pressure to conform does not cause me to live better, it brings unhealthy stress into my life.
Darth, I'm glad that at least the surgery went well. It sounds like that brother was extremely presumptuous to be there. If it ever happens again, I would ask him directly what purpose he is serving and who requested his presence. Put the spotlight on him and make him explain everything he does. Turn it around, so he is the outsider, not you and your sister.

Yep, I can hear it now. For the next ten months I am going to get comments from "strong" jws about how our deliverance is at hand and now is not the time to be slowing down.

New Light! Invisible Armageddon!
by jstalin init is going to be announced that with all the anticipation for the coming of armageddon, we didnt notice the actual event.
thats right, it was an invisible armageddon.
if we take the 70 years of captivity, plus 1914, we get 1984. then we use the people equal hours rule and apply it to the 144,000, using division, and we get 6,000. then we use the hours equal years rule to divide 6,000 by 360 to get 16.66 additional years, add that to 1984, and we get the year 2000 for armageddon!

In case any of you missed it, Homer figured out the end of the world on an episode of the Simpsons. Every time I see it I wonder if it is a jab at the witnesses, and if so it is hilarious. He puts together a ton of numbers on an erasable board, complete with 144,00, then subtracts the number of Filipinos in the bible (0) and comes up with a date. One of the funniest things I have ever seen!
Hey, mr. FDS(Brownboy, EliJah, Leuese(sp?)) I am glad to see you posting. Life is less interesting without you!
