I read 'the da Vinci Code', then promptly went away and read 'Secrets of the Code' to start learning the true story. Nothing in the DVC made me lost my faith in the bible.

Can DaVinci Code make Witnesses think?
by Lilycurly ini've just finished reading the book...and i know most of it is fiction, but some of you might have read it too.
as an ex-jw, it really made me think...the author has an excellent way to make one think outside the box without making it look like he wants to ram his ideas into your head...you know, it's kind of subtle, amongst all the action and enigmas.
my father loves to read...i really want him to read that book.

Oprah, James Frey and the call for TRUTH
by Scully ini don't know if you have been following the story about james frey, author of a million little pieces, how the book was inducted into oprah's book club last fall, with him making an appearance on the show, proclaiming the "memoir" as completely true and unaltered.
she even delayed announcing her next book club selection by six weeks to give this book more publicity.. some investigation by the smoking gun revealed that many of the accounts in the book were embellished beyond any recognition of truth.
for example, the incident where frey claims to have been in jail for 3 months, was actually only a matter of hours.

Symbolic generation. Does it extend batting time for WTBTS?
by Spectrum inbefore coming on this forum i didn't know that the jws had changed the generation definition from literal to symbolic and i obviously predicted that this religion will be finished when that last 1914 codger dies.
when i found out that they had changed their definition i thought, bloody hell this religion is going to go on forever.
then i thought that no, they are going to fade out, then i settled on, they are going to survive just like the catholics and orthodox.

They will always be around as long as they don't do what the Herbert Armstrong crowd did and change their core doctrines.

Jesus and the Father
by Thomson ingod spoke to moses on the mountain, yet jesus said john 5:37 also the father who sent me has himself borne witness about me.
you have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his figure.
(nwt) .the only-begotten god who is in the bosom position with the father is the one that has explained him.

"This all points to one thing no one has ever heard the voice of the Father, so when God spoke to Moses it was not the Father but the Son(Jesus)"
Nonsense. It was the Father's voice that spoke from heaven when the greater Moses, Jesus, got baptised. Same voice that spoke to Moses himself.

Life in Bethel & Ex-Bethelites know if the GB prayed together?
by Sheepish ini have always wondered how seriously they took this dispensing doctrine thing.
do they all get together and actually pray or just have meetings?
ex- bethelites say they wrote doctrinal articles for the watchtower or awake.

I think it's a given that the GB pray before their meetings/discussions.
Have u read Ray Franz's books?

HOW MANY ARE REALLY TRUE TO ORGANIZATION TEACHINGS???
by chuckyy inmy experience since leaving the jw's, knowing certain ones who still have contact, is that many jw's in good standing have done, or are doing things that could merit expulsion.
celebrating new year.
agreeing to blood transfusion.

I've never met a JW that didn't bend the rules a bit here and there, or who didn't have one or two doubts about something taught by the Society.

Has communism really fallen?
by greendawn inhas communism really fallen?
that doesn't seem to be the case.
china a country that contains a fifth of the world's population is the new motherland of communism, after russia went capitalistic (or so it seems), there are several other communist countries like vietnam, cuba, many ex soviet states, and there are powerful communist sympathisers elsewhere in burma, south africa, brazil, venezuela etc.

Fascism is alive and well too. Just look at the Republicans and the neocons behind it.

The "Sunk Cost" Fallacy
by LDH insilent watcher made reference to a theory called "sunk cost fallacy.
" i had not heard of this term, but when i googled, i did get a reference to the very familiar concorde theory.
if you are not familiar with either, here is a primer.

Very interesting. I'd say there indeed is a kind of 'sunk-cost' psychology for why many JW's stay in, mainly the older ones. I was the same, sometimes thinking "but if I leave with my luck Armageddon will come straight after". It's the same with persons who spend years and years wasting money on lotto tickets, they think "I bet my numbers will come up the week I stop buying them".
It's pretty much the psychology the Society's uses in the Live Forever book in the illustration about a road-map and how a person who has been driving for a long time the wrong way can't bear having to go all the way back, even when shown on their own map how off track they are.

by greendawn induring your time as jws were there times that you were in need for some help from the jw brotherhood but felt let down because no one cared to help you?

Yep, totally. Most elders are useless. Ezekiel 34 seems to sum them up.

Sad and True
by KW13 in.
ah, i am 17 and my mum is just 40.. she hasn't planned for her pension, she won't dedicate to a proper job or anything though i am trying to push her into anything.. the thing is, i don't just want her out of her faith, i want her to have a future where she can live and retire, she can't work forever and what if she got sick?.
ah, it drives me crazy what the witnesses do, maybe one day she might wake up, get angry with the wbt society and sue them!
