  What's the intent of Mat.23:1-3 ?

  then jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying: the scribes and the pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of moses; therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

  (mat.23:1-3 nasb).

  i've been wondering a lot about what these verses.

  I think Jesus was saying that it was not an excuse to disobey the law code simply because the scribes and pharisees were hypocritical jerks. He was saying that the Mosaic law code was still valid and beneficial and should be adhered to, but not in the self-righteous, fanatical, legalistic way the Pharisees were upholding it.

  i've always wondered about this, especially recently.

  i've always contended that they were real and ignored the conspiracy theories.

  but if they were real, why hasn't nasa been able to send a man to the moon since the 1970s?

  Both. They did indeed make it to the moon but the photos were so shitty that they faked some when they got back.

  Mind Control? or just usual group processes?

  i have limited knowledge about mind control from the psychology degree i have just finished.

  i had been unhappy with my life as a witno for a long time but one particular lecture really pushed me to the point of leaving and after that lecture i never returned to the meetings.

  the lecture was on brain washing tactics employed in the military, there were so many points that struck a chord with me.

  A bit of both. There is information (mind) control and Groupthink with JW's. Groupthink is an immensely powerful force that is somewhat underestimated and JW's are one of the greatest religious examples of it.

  Disgusting comment re: education from Tacoma 2007 District Convention

  this is from saturday afternoon program.

  the speaker first starts with what he called the "alphabet soup" of degrees....a.a., b.a., m.a., ph.d., etc.

  ; he said they were nothing more than "sheepskins on the wall.

  Actually, there is a positive side to speakers making disgraceful comments like that: they serve to alienate young ones and their families who are ignoring the Society's pathetic bleatings about higher education.
  
  The comment also highlights how cold, judgmental and unloving the organisation really is. The emotional force motivating JW's is more about fear of Armageddon than genuine love of Christ or neighbour.

  Why I Loved the 2007 Convention "Follow the Christ"!

  i attended friday's part of the 2007 district convention "follow the christ" with my believing wife.

  we survived the limited parking and crowded seating (although large sections of the auditorium had been shut off).

  we suffered the monotonous program delivered by robotic speakers reading rehashed outlines.. so why did i love this convention?.

  Control of the organisation is not really in the hands of a few men. It went way beyond that decades ago. The GB, the committees, the branches, DO's, CO's, elders, publishers, etc, etc, all cooperate together to create a huge, conceptual EMERGENT PROPERTY that is much bigger than all the constituent parts. This is the real thing that keeps the organisation ticking over. Quite exactly what this emergent property is I'm not too sure of but it has something to do with their belief they alone are 'the truth'.
