"But you'll agree that the Trinity wasn't explicitly mentioned in the first post, wherein others have jumped on the Divinity debate to their own [anti-]trinitarian ends?" - LT To those who disagree with the Trinity, it is inevitable to associate Christ's divinity with his role in the Trinity. To them they are not running off-topic. I dislike the way you characterize people who disagree with the Trinity as having "jumped" on an opportunity to argue. Are you oblivious to the fact that the content of the first post is inflammatory (albeit unknowingly) towards those who disagree with Jesus' divinity? INQ

Little Toe,
To someone who disagrees with the notion of the Son and the Father being co-equal, the word-association is necessary. It need not be the work of the WTS. Why? To force oneself to disregard that association feels almost like a new form of "programming", which being former JWs is very undesirable.
However, what need not be inevitable is the Trinity debate. I'm happy to have someone refer to Jesus as God. A little voice might say "bloody Trinitarian!" . But it doesn't have to translate into an argument over Christ's nature. The problem with this thread is it allowed (possibly even encouraged) a Trinity debate from the start, for the reasons I stated in my previous post.
Regards,

Why does believing in the Divinity of Christ have to deteriorate into a conversation about the Trinity? - Little Toe
Well, why does reference to Cadbury make us think of chocolate?
Why does mention of Mcdonalds lead to discussions about fast food (junk food?), obesity and corporate hegemony?
It's inevitable word-association.
And besides, BelieverInJesus began the thread with arguments for why Jesus Christ is God, makes the assertion that the anti-Trinitarian stance taken by JWs proves they are misguided, and concludes with "What do you all think?".
He/She was begging for it, LT.

BelieverinJesus,
If you have already formed such a solid conviction in your mind, why do you still ask who Jesus is? What do you desire out of us? Confirmation? Criticism? If we disagreed, would there be any profit in showing you why?
To prove that the Bible books unanimously scream "Jesus is God!!", one must convincingly explain the meaning of the scriptures such as those listed by Flash. I'm not saying the Trinity is without scriptural basis. I'm saying that the Trinity backing is not as solid as many would choose to believe.

Ray Franz CoC, was he in denial? Just asking.
by Wasanelder Once ini was reading a little coc last night where ray f. disusses the witch hunt at bethel that resulted in all the oustings.
as i read the doctrines that he questioned, (not judging him right or wrong), i noticed that he was questioning some of the fundamental beliefs of the wt.

It is very sad to see that some xJWs have sunk to feeding on their own. What has Ray Franz done to deserve this?
The owl claims to never have been a JW before. If that is true, it cannot possibly be an xJW.
I cannot think of any ex-JW who would harbor such unrestrained malice towards Raymond Franz and his books. I cannot imagine why any ex-JW would.

The three F's
by A Paduan inthere was a program on yesterday evening on four corners, australia's leading public current affairs program.. it was on the exclusive bretheren, a group very similar to the jws; fundamentalist, literalist, authoritative, family splitting, assisting to deny shunned partners any child custody etc.
etc.. the group is smaller, and on that basis i think able to maintain more strictness.. those who left had a saying for what keeps others in - the three f's - fear, family, finances.

You're comparing with Rutherford? Do we know for sure that he had a drinking problem? I've always thought that was merely speculation.

Hey A Paduan,
I watched that programme too. The familiarity was upsetting. They claim to have no political dealings, hold a condescending view of higher education (like JWs too some of their youths have defied this rule), practice excommunication (theirs is called "dead separation" or being "withdrawn from"), employ that same slick lingo when in public spotlight e.g. "no one is compelled to associate with the Exclusive Brethren....members do it of their own volition..." etc.
Exculsive Brethren are different though. Wasn't it shocking how their members are absolutely uninhibited about their use of swear words on TV? They forbid contraception, forbid radio and TV, seem to assist members with finances (JWs don't necessarily), forbid keeping of pets (in the past??), command sexual abstinence between married couples as a form of discipline, forcibly remove women and children from the homes of former members .

What's it like?
by Jerohobobonadad inhello all.. i have always wondered what feelings people have in the hours/minutes prior to getting baptised, the seconds immediately afterwards and then the first few hours thereafter?.
i've never done it, but it seems like it would be a real head f-!.
anyone willing to share their experiences?.

Man, your tag is quite a mouthful! lol.
What was my Big Dip like? Well I was very happy, my folks and my friends were proud of me. Baptism is a joyous occasion for most people. No I was not hysterical. It just happened really. No dramas.
I was not coerced by anyone to get baptized, though I was encouraged to think seriously about it. Nudging me in that direction was a good thing. It made me investigate the Truth. Though my conviction was based on false and incomplete information, my resolve was genuine. That same fierce determination for truth eventually led to my ultimate rejection of this organization as a source of truth.
I have no reservations thinking of that day. But that may have something to do with the fact that I have not invested decades of my life into this religion. I guess I should count myself fortunate. I also have no reservations because my baptism was not the moment I lost my intellectual might to the WTS. I had willingly given it over to them way before. Reflecting on my baptism does not send chills up my spine, thankfully.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the movie. Some things are just acquired tastes i guess. Horror is often dark. I cannot think of one that isn't. But horror buffs don't just focus on that single aspect. Even as lovers of dark chocolate do not only taste it's bitterness. It's the whole movie (if executed well) that impresses.
Care to elaborate?
