Sucks don't it? At least she is at home with a new pair. The other's should be fine given a couple of days in disinfectant. I have even rejuvinated dried out lenses!! Have you seen them? They're crunchy. I've been wearing soft contacts for 27 yrs. Not the same pair of course! It's ok to rinse them in water before putting in your eye, doesn't feel as good, but it works.

Girl!! Don't you get me started on the homework issue!! When my children were young, I had to work full time and we lived about 30-40 minutes outside of town (because that was the only way we could afford to buy a house!). So, after getting off at 5 o'clock, driving home, picking up the kids at daycare (grrrr), it was almost 6:30 by the time I got to start cooking dinner. Everyone has chores, getting ready for the next day, eating dinner, etc. etc. Then the homework horror would begin. There was TONS of it. My daughter was in the Gifted and Talented Education Program at this time, and I swear I had to be her teacher, because there was so much stuff they would go over it once, and then send home a packet of homework. Where is the time? I just think about families that are less capable or less interested in this process. Many parents here in California, don't even speak English. How are they to help their children keep up?? Frankly, I didn't train to be a teacher, I don't think that's my job. Values, morals, ideas, yes, but not academics.
I agree we have our share of lousy parents, but I would have to think that is not uncommon in the world. And yet in this country we are rating so much lower in test scores than some of our neighbors.

I would suggest that we start by educating adults on what it means to be a parent.
So you are saying that America has a higher percentage of lousy parents? If so, why? Again I would have to ask the questions I asked above.

My questions would be: What are average class sizes. What do teachers get paid. What portion of the federal budget goes to education. What percentage of families have two working parents. What is the homework standard. What percentage of the population is below the poverty line Etc. etc.

The Measure of a Man
by purplesofa inby sidney poitier.
i am reading this book, not because it is on oprahs book club list, or that i was particulary interested in sidney poitier and his spiritual autobiography, but it was on the used bookshelf at the hospitol for 50 cents and i could not pass up a bargain.. i recommend it, its very good and interesting.
he grew up in the bahama islands, his parents were tomato farmers, his story is amazing and inspiring.

Mum! Darn you! Those were the very two movies I would have picked. Patch of Blue was crazy good. And To Sir just goes without saying. I own that one, I may just watch it. Why does it always make me cry so??!!

Just a quick comment. I actually think one of the main reasons that Merry Christmas and all that goes with it is disappearing, is money. I work in the Library, a government building. Most libraries now, are at least partially funded by local tax initiatives that had to be VOTED on by the local community. Ok. How about business? Most business's want to appeal to as many consumers as possible, so of course they are going to consider the fact that many of them are not celebrating Christmas. So "Happy Holidays". Other public offices and entities, are so afraid of litigation, and I'm not just talking about this subject, I'm talking about EVERYTHING! I loose tile, discrimination of any kind, etc. etc. that it's just a whole lot easier to be more general, and leave specific religious holidays out of it.
One more thing. I don't know how many of you were raised as dubs, but I was. I hated Christmas time. It was one of the most embarrassing and unfun times of the year. Any craft that was done (I can remember specifics here) with a Christmas theme, chorus (which we all were in) at this time of year, I had to either go sit in some other room, and doodle or stand silent while everyone around me sang the words, or make crafts that were of another sort. Which of course started all the questions from other kids. Never mind the horror that was going back after the Christmas break, and having to deal with all the whys then.
I think it's terrific if we take religion out of public areas, if for no other reason than to preserve a few poor dub kids some misery.
We won't even talk about the flag salute. I had a Kindergarten teacher grab my right hand and slap it over my heart the first week of school.
