Is there anyone at Bethel who knows Greek or Hebrew?
by VM44 infred franz was known to have some knowledge of the greek and hebrew languages, and made use of that knowledge when he worked on the new world translation of the holy scriptures.
but he died in 1992. is there anyone at bethel today who has a knowledge of these biblicl languages?.
it would be strange if a religious book publishing organization turned out to have no one at all who could read the bible in its original languages.. does anyone know what people are currently on the watchtower's bible translation committee, and if they know the languages?.

JWs, why God's organisation and not His church?
by greendawn inthe jws call themselves an organisation and not a church except perhaps very rarely.
but is there something untoward hiding behind this choice?
to me it is objectionable because it ties in with the fds concept as god's sole channel on earth serving his supposed people.

I know one time I was talking with my Jw freind about how some people think tattoos were wrong. I metioned that some people belive one would be defacing your temple, that is your body. He looked at me blankly. I added "you know how in scripture where it says your body is a temple..." . He said he had never heard that. Go figure. So if they don't use church I could see why they don't use temple. Don't get me started on the convo we tried to have on the church being the body of Christ...

Dealing with a non-JW (tongue in cheek)
by kiddotan inmy other half's sister is dating a wb, (i'm a wg), she wants to know how to deal with all of us strange worldly people (she's says this with a humph).
her boyfriend, is being very male, problem is my darling jw half agreed (my turn to humph and sulk, go to the fridge and get a beer for me only).. they haven't quite made the step to look here themselves, so they asked me to look for them, i told them they are wusses .
anybody have anything for me to print out for them, not too nasty about us worldly lot.

i have never been one but my father once studied with them. I don't think he was ever fully JW by he used the NWT, participated in home study, etc. Anyway, he has been some what delivered from the clutches (and the guy that bought him in :) for about 10 years but he still carries around the logic and conversation style. Sometimes it's a little frightening, but I know he doesn't have the same beiieve structure.

the first thing he asked me was, do you go to the meeting now?
he mentioned how armageddon was so close.

Praise God! I feel so blessed that I found this forum. To just name AuldSoul (no dis...love your writting style and sincere spirit) could be discouraging to the others (sometimes newbies) that seek and speak The Truth. In other words...keep it up folks!

JW Marketing
by Clam inthe way the jw religion markets itself often intrigues me.
needless to say one of the most powerful marketing tools, the internet, is giving more hindrance than help to the wts.. i'm suprised that the organisation still sticks with the basic door to door sales approach, which more often than not irritates people, and that they push their message primarily with rather crude magazines.
i'm sure the magazines have to be basic and cheap to maintain profit margins, but in a more sophisticated media dominated world do they really think that cheesy drawings of people cuddling tigers in front of waterfalls is a good sell?

Aslo it would provide another avenue of keeping record. All of the stuff they say in privite I wouldn't think would fly well on TV. Also, although I don't think anyone would do this, If someone would record (God forbid TIvo), it would such a hardcore con when "the light changes" or "gets brighter". One could say "Yes you, So and so, on the so and so-th of so-uary, said so and so". Sooooooooooooooo (lol) their words could come back harder because it's not a link (easy to change), or a pamplet(reprint-all better now) or DVD (did you get the latest edition, toss out the old one, you don't need it). ANyways...the horse is dead, so I will stop beating it.

Birthday
by rootofallevil ini know this has been brought up before but can someone remind me how we can explain the phrase "on his own day" mentioned in job 1:4 as meaning "on ones birthday"?
if i remember correctly, in the same book (job) a few chapters later there is a mention of this phrase which clearly shows that it was on their birthday.
also isn't it interesting that job felt obligated to offer burnt sacrifises in case one of his children had "cursed god in their heart".

Is spiritual compatibility important?
by serendipity inhow important is/was spirituality to you when considering a person as a husband/wife?
did you expect the person to have similar spiritual beliefs and goals?
if s/he didn't have similar beliefs, was it important to be able to discuss spirituality respectfully ?

I think problems can arise later when children come into the picture. But the thing is..arguments can still arise...even if they are both in the same religion...just a matter of respecting one another. Snoozy...
I agree. When children come into the picture, being with someone in a different belief system can be detremental. For example a baptist and jw...do I need to say anything else? Arguments can still arise yes in a simalar [faith] situation, however I would guess with less severe consiquinces, ie, debating weither or not to go to saturday or sunday services versus come to my hall because I can't go to your church. Adding kids to the mix...I have heard many a story of someone's infant child dying or being permantly damaged because parents could not agree on dotrine and thus come up with a decision.
I "dated" a jw for almost a year (btw, baptist: born and raised) and some of our conversations/ his actions were absolutly devistating. It really put a hole in what we did have and eventually lead to the end of the relationship.
So...after writting a mini series here :) I will say that spritual compatability is very important. And before people start calling me a hypocryte (doubt that's how you spell it), he didn't tell me he was jw untill later in the relationship. In fact a friend of mind metioned it in passing one day and I asked him about it.
