Why do elders come unnanounced.......
by ISP inyeah, like these guys never make appointments.
just stroll up when it suits them and not you.
is it ignorance or simply a matter of discourtesy?

Last year two elders were driving along the same road I was. I happened to have my wife, her sister and her brother in the car with me. We kept going along, and getting nearer to my house, when my wife goes, "Oh man, you think they are coming to our house?"
Sure enough, I pulled into my driveway and they pull in right behind me. Under the pretense of inviting me to the Memorial, they made their way into my home. Later in the cordial discussion the real reason for their uninvited visit was made manifest: I was thereby summoned before a judicial committee on the basis of an accusation that I had been associating with a disfellowshipped person.
One of those elders had contacted me years prior because of my not having attended meetings for some time. He insisted that he would only visit me with another elder present. The other elder had encouraged my wife to not spend time at home but only spend nights here as a precaution against being infected with my apostate ideas. I had counted both of those men as close friends. Oh well. I guess some imagined invisible man in the sky is a lot more important than flesh and blood Cygnus. :)

Evolution a proven fact? LOL
by Rex B13 insome interesting quotes from evolutionists.
natural history, vol.
' new scientist, vol.
-
Cygnus
Here's just one example of a quote being taken out of context and appearing to support your anti-evolution agenda.
Quoted text: "In any case, no real evolutionist, whether gradualist or punctualionist, uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of the theory of evolution as opposed to special creation." Mark Ridley (Zoologist, Oxford University), 'Who doubts evolution?' New Scientist, vol. 90, 25 June 1981, p. 831
The fact is, in that issue of New Scientist, Ridley "criticized the creationists for misconstructing this debate over the mechanism of evolution as if it were a debate over the fact of evolution. Here are Ridley's own words...
'The argument is about the actual historical pattern of evolution; but outsiders, seeing a controversy unfolding, have imagined that it is about the truth of evolution --- whether evolution occured [sic] at all. This is a terrible mistake, and it springs, I believe, from the false idea that the fossil record provides an important part of the evidence that evolution took place. In fact, evolution is proven by a totally separate set of arguments, and the present debate within paleontology does not impinge at all on the evidence that supports evolution... a lot of people just do not know what evidence the theory of evolution stands upon. They think that the main evidence is the gradual descent of one species from another in the fossil record. In any case, no real evolutionist, whether gradualist or punctuationist, uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of the theory of evolution as opposed to special creation.'"
(taken from http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/ken_saladin/saladin-gish2/saladin2.html and http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/elsberry/evobio/evc/sc_misq/_mridley.html)
Now, Rex, Ridley is not saying that the fossil record _disproves_ evolution. He says that it is not the better evidence for evolution.
I am rather certain that tbe bulk of the rest of your quotes (chock full of elipses chopping sentences apart I might add, making them awfully suspect) are similar in nature.

Accuracy of Bible Translation
by ruffian ini am trying to find out more on the translators of the jw's bible.
they claim and so it claims in the front of their bible that it was translated by experts in greek and hebrew.
what training if any did these people actually have in these ancient languages.
-
Cygnus
Okay, look. Does anyone really believe that Gangas or Schroeder really had anything to do with the actual translation process? No. Their and others' roles were supplementary and administrative.
Fred Franz was the principal translator, and probably everything went through his office, but certainly there were many, many other persons involved who went unnamed that performed research and helped along the way.
IMO, the NWT doesn't get quite the deserved respect for its scholarly approach to Bible translation that ought to be acknowledged.
That said, it's not the Bible I'd choose, for study purposes or for casual reading.

: I saw a guy that I know was a pedophile when I was a kid. . . I recognized him immediately, even after 30 years.
Dude, don't you think it's time to let go?
: They have detectives pose as teenaged girls in chat rooms. As a result of the conversations, men drive to Zenia expecting a date with a 14 year old.
Sounds like entrapment to me. If those dudes were smart, they'd ask if their prospective partners were affiliated at all with law enforcement.
I always do. :)

Did 60 Minutes do a show on Jehovahs' Witnesses?
by Preston ini read a statement in the watchtower that 60 minutes did a report on jehovah's witnesses.
does anyone know about this?
-
Cygnus
Yup. Was back in 1990 or 1991, as I recall. Don't remember much about the program. I recall two things: one, they focused on the Society's accumulated wealth and real estate holdings in Brooklyn, and two, at the end of the piece, they showed a Witness woman at a door and her young son stared into the camera with this gigantic frown like he'd rather be at school!

RAGE ... trying not to give in ...
by dedalus ini recently stopped by my father's house to pick up some mail and to drop off my brother's sunglasses.
my father, a zealous dub with 24 years in the collective, asked to talk to me.. for those who don't know, my fiancee and i are having a baby, which for obvious reasons causes some consternation on my father's part: you don't have to be a witness to believe that sex before marriage is wrong.
(if someone wants to discuss whether this is a valid position or not, do it in another thread.

Hey, man, I'm totally sorry about your circumstance. That sucks.
As many here know, I totally lucked out in that my parents don't shun me. When I got DF'd last year, both Mom and Dad told me that they love me and this wouldn't change anything. I know for a fact that my Dad would hang himself on a cross to save my soul if he had to.
I honestly don't know who to feel more sorry for, Ded. You, or your Dad. I have a very difficult time believing, knowing you as I do, that your Dad really _wants_ to be treating you in this manner. The conundrum he is facing must be very difficult to deal with.
The way I'd approach the situation is to flat out tell your Dad, Look, I'm your son, I will always be your son, I love you, you love me, this is the way it is, this is the way it's going to be, I need you, you need me, please accept it, and let's be a family.
