I think a lot of it boils down to friends and how well-liked you are. When I was a JW kid I had a few close friends but not many. When we grew up our wives and their families took precedence and we were never as close as we were when we were teenagers. Then you woulda start to feel the lack of love and a more corporate atmosphere from the brothers in the congregation. You start to ask yourself, why am I busting my butt for basically one invisible man in the sky who never talks back and seems to not give a rat's rear about anyone or anything except books and numbers? That's when you start to do some research and decide it's not worth living a lie for practically nothing in return.

I see a lot of people leaving, such as in Germany, Poland, Phillipines, Nigeria and Britain. And the real whopper was USA, with about 26,000 people leaving last year. Funny, we get a lot of JW chatters from Phillipines and Nigeria in the JW Yahoo room.

Grew my hair really, really long. Grew a beard. Got an earring. Bought a shirt that read FREE BREATHALYZER TEST -- BLOW HERE with an arrow pointing to my crotch. Showed up at my judicial hearing looking like that.

Funny. Neither the elders nor anybody else bothered my baptised brother and sister when they quit going to meetings, celebrated all sorts of pagan stuff, and married into other faiths. Guess they just got lucky.

Last year when I was traveling out of state on the weekends to visit my girlfriend we would go with her family to the Sunday meeting at the Kingdom Hall. Of course nobody there knew I was disfellowshipped and apostate. So I had a blast shaking hands and exchanging laughs with the elders who were always very friendly and happy to see me.

What "born-again Christian" doctrines do you have a hard time swallowing?
by booker-t ini am curious about this question because i always had the impression that born-again christians believe everything the church teaches no matter what.
then i remember talking to a born-again friend of mine that was having a hard time with her pastor because he told her wearing "pants" and "jewelry" was a "sin" and she would go to hell for that.
my friend said she loved the church that she started going to but she was not going to give up wearing pants or jewelry.

I didn't see it. I probably will never see it. The name "Ron Rhodes" especially turned me immediately off. Greg Stafford crushes Rhodes every time he gets within a sniff of him. Rhodes and other xtian fundies don't really "get" JWs and fail to offer valuable constructive remarks as impartial critics, such as AlanF, do.
To me, xtians and JWs basically believe in the same thing: an invisible man, in the sky, who sees all and knows pretty much all and some day, some time, will do something about whatever what. -
