  Pew Results on JW's and Interesting Commentary

  the pew forum released it's results of the u.s. religious survey.

  although the results found that americans are becoming more religiously tolerant, evangelicals and jehovah's witnesses are the least likely to be tolerant (not surprisingly).

  Graduating from collge next week

  i just wanted share that i am graduating from columbia university next week with an undergraduate degree in sociology at the age of 39. see, it's never too late, for anyone out there considering attending college.. my partner and around 10 of my closest friends will be there to cheer me on, which is overshadowing any disappointment that my family will not be there, or as of today, yet to acknowledge this accomplishment that means so much to me (i sent grad announcements a few weeks ago along with an invite).

  in all honestly, they live across the country so it is an expensive trip.. anyway, despite the student loans, hard work and sacrifices, it has been well worth it.

  i remember back in h.s in the late 1980s, i begged my parents to let me attend college, but of course, the end was coming and it was a waste of time.

  Film "Worlds Apart," screened in NYC - GO SEE IT

  hello, just want to highly recommend the danish film, "worlds apart" now being screend at the tribeca film festival in new york.

  the acting is superb and the filmakers represent the witnesses accurately (to the "t") withoug making them appear fanatic.

  after all, these are people sincere in their beliefs no matter how absurd.

  In light of the teddy bear named Muhammad.....

  regarding the teddy bear named muhammad by a class in a prestigious private school in sudan and the ensuing controversy, which is a prime example of religious fundamentalism (or religious extremism if you prefer) gone awry, i thought i'd incite some conflict in good 'ol usa..... jehovah is a self-centered tyrantjesus is a wine-loving homeless hippieallah is jehovah's alter-egomoses is warlockjoseph smith is a pedophilebuddah is a pregnant hermaphroditethe governing body of jehovah's witnesses are brainless, racist and closeted homosexual alcoholicsthere, that feels better.. best,.

  Are JW's former Chiliasts?

  hey, i was reading karl marx today for one of my college classes and he mentions briefly the chiliasts and i quote, "in their minds [french revolutionists] may 2, 1852, had become a fixed idea, a dogma, like the day on which christ should reappear and the millennium begin, in the minds of the chiliasts.

  " the footnote goes on to say about the chiliasts, "the adherents of an ancient christian sect, who believed in the second coming of christ and in the establishment of the millennium, a thousand years of pardise on earth.

  obviously this mention of the millennium believing chiliasts struck my curiosity since that is exactly what jws believe especially when chiliasts believed that satan would be let loose at the end of the 1000 years for one final battle.

  Looking for advice from anyone out there with grad or advanced degrees

  hey, i'm finishing up my last year in undergrad school and am considering pursuing grad school.

  i am hoping to chat with individuals privately, who are attending grad school or have a graduate/advanced degrees for advice about the practicalities and expenses relating to attending grad school later in life (mid-30s +).. i'm not pursing medicine, law or business, so i'm concerned that the effort and expense of grad school may not be worth it.. thanks,.

  Missing my siblings wedding

  just releasing some steam, but i'm going to be missing my siblings wedding this summer due to the fact i'm dfd.

  my sibling invited me but i can't justify the travel expense (across the country) to observe a 20 minute ceremony and then go to a motel alone while everyone is stuffing their faces.. i just hits at the core of human relationships and is so divisive, but that is the point.

  after months of no communication, my mother calls me this week to remind me of what i'm missing out on.

  attn: wtbts writing deparment: since your publications enjoy downplaying the extraordinary value of secondary education (at a college or university), i thought you may want to include the following information in your next publication regarding "the value of education" (see the oct 1 and 15, 2005 watchtower and booklet entitled "education.").

  and you don't have to worry about misrepresenting the following quote form the may 21, 2007, new york times, since the message is very clear:.

  In search for truth...thinking freely or free thinking?

  in a reading for one of my college classes, i came across a passage which i immediately thought i'd share with my friends on this board:.

  "truth gains more even by the errors of one who, with due study and preparation, thinks for himself, than by the true opinions of those who only hold them because they do not suffer themselves to think...there have been, and may again be, great individual thinkers, in a general atmosphere of mental slavery.

  but there never has been, nor ever will be, in that atmosphere, an intellectually active people.".
