Wow, what a crappy situation. I hope all works out to the benefit of you, your brother and your mother. Sounds like you and your brother have the smarts of the family. Just make sure EVERYTHING is in writing, signed and notarized before handing over any money for the payment of the irresponsible stepfather's debt. Glad to hear you have a lawyer on the case. At least the good thing is by you and your brother getting the house in your names (if it turns out that way), you won't have to worry about YOUR memories going to unappreciative stepchildren. I can understand wanting to keep the room clean, uncluttered and presentable, but to put restrictions on time in bathrrom and phone use? If no one esle needs to use those, just common courtesy would apply. Also, how can he deny a needed area, the kitchenette? Maybe he should take the other room. Who's to say a new roommate can't use it especially if he needs it for medical reasons, special diet, meds, etc.. He obviously has health issues from rule #1. Not a very loving arrangement.
