There was a chick in my old Hall that would not let her kids read fairy tales or fables. And even better, when the kids were in school and the teacher would try to read them a story that was a fairy tale or fable, the kids had to leave to go to the library. Now, you may wonder where those kids are today .... one girl lives on the other side of the world from her mother and has nothing to do with her. The other one is bi-polar and is heavily medicated with serious problems. What is the saddest is the mother wonders "where she went wrong" because her girls are not serving Jah. It makes you want to scream!!!! What is actually pretty funny, is that in the JWs mind this woman was really strange. If that is not like the pot calling the kettle black.

Why do the British dubs have such an animosity to Harry Potter?!
by CaptainSchmideo inif i have ever mentioned that i've seen the movies or read the books to a witness in gb, i get the kind of reaction that used to be reserved for smurfs here in america.. i am not naive enough to not understand any discomfort with a school for witches, but this stuff is about as threatening as casper the friendly ghost.
i find the books charming, if a little long winded and formulaic.
the movies, especially the later two, tighten up the plots and jettison a lot of excess baggage.

C.S.I. Bridesmaids
by Poztate ini was watching csi (crime scene investigation) with my wife last night.
the crime scene was at a wedding and a remark was made to the effect that the"historic" purpose of bridesmaids was to ward off evil spirits.
google turned up this comment amongst others.... choosing your bridesmaids.

Wedding rings are also pagan. As for toasts, it is my understanding there was an article that came out okaying that, saying that since it was something that was done hundreds of years ago, that the pagan origin is no longer known and it is okay to do it. So does that mean JWs can say "god bless you" after someone sneezes? Or that you can have wreaths on your door. Or the thousand other things that started out as "pagan" are still "pagan". Think of all the things that started out one way and ended up another. They need to stop straining the gnat on everything.

Giving a Talk on JW's
by aniron ini have been asked to give a talk on the jw's, about 30-45 mins long.. but there is so much i would like to say that it could end up being either very long or boring or both.
if you had to give a talk about jw's to a group of people who really had no idea about jw beliefs and culture.
what would you included ?.

Dealing with guilt and your own self perception
by Satans little helper inbeing a witness leads you to believe that if you are less than perfect then you are detached from god's love and are unworthy.
it's a very black and white thing - either you are getting through armagheddon and keep to all of the rules, or you are not keeping to all of the rules and are going to die.
personally i think that is one of the jw faith's greatest strengths and also it's greatest weakness - a strength in that it leaves adherents unable to question their beliefs lest they anger god enough to condemn them, and a weakness in that as soon as you discard one stone in the wall then you are forced to reject the whole structure as you feel damned anyway.. .

Thank you SLH. I think the Rabbi's point is also proven by the story of the Israelites. If you think about the bible story of how often they sinned and yet they were constantly being "forgiven", it is a great example of God's love. I think for humans it is impossible for us to completely understand the concept of unconditional love. But I believe it does exist and it is in God's ability to show it in all circumstances.
However, it is our responsibility as humans to forgive ourselves. That is where guilt falls. When we blame ourselves, berate oursleves and not forgive ourselves, that is when we allow others to feed into our negative beliefs and confirm our fears. It is only when we are able to accept the fact that we are imperfect humans but that we are given leave to make mistakes and ultimately learn from them.
Erich Fromm said "Man's main task in life is to give birth to himself to become what he potentially is. The most important product of his effort is his own personality." May we all reach our potential in life.

Would you change the way you left if you could?
by Gadget inif you were put in a similar position to when you left the jws, would you choose to leave in a particular way because of your experiences?
if you had nothing to loose from family etc, would you be tempted to leave with a bang, or to get some sort of revenge on those who shun you?

I give a lot of credit to people who DA'd themselves. If my family was not in and active, I would DA myself. But it would break my grandparents' heart and my mother's heart and my sister's heart and my niece and nephew's heart. There is more to it then just me. But I think for those that left by their own methods, you should be commended for your strength and presence of mind.
That being said, no a slow fade was the only way to go for me.

Bethel Coach Trips--Is there a Dress Code?
by LDH inhttp://www.bethelcoachtours.com
31. is there a dress code?
the society suggests a dress code be set up for the trip because everywhere we stop we give a witness.

And then there will be an insert saying, "you all are setting a bad example, because you are wearing your meeting close and wearing your badges but you are not acting like Witness". There is just no pleasing these people.

Satan Helps Dubs Look Bad
by Clam inwe've recently started to get visits from varying pairs of dubs.
i've been pretty harsh with some in the past and told them to mark me down at the hall as a "do not return", but this has not worked.
a couple of new sisters called on me yesterday morning, so i carefully steered them towards the blood issue.

Come on guys, you know it is just the typical persecution factor. JWs are all about the 1) Satan is behind it 2) apostates are behind it = translation, Satan is behind it 3) we are getting persecuted for our faith = translation, Satan is behind it.
We had a family friend who was a bit absent minded. However, every time she lost her keys she blamed it on the Satan. Satan is hiding her keys again so she cannot go to the meeting, go out in service, make her bible study. It was hysterical, until I realized she was dead serious. The persecution complex runs deep. What is really frightening is when they mix it up with the whole conspiracy theory as well. Then it is really tripped out.

It's not only the Bethel tours. My firm has a couple of offices in collar counties and they have a dress code for the women which sounds a lot like the dress code for the tours. Women are required to wear skirts or dresses w/ hoes and heels at all times. There were a number of women in the downtown office that pitched a fit when they tried to bring that to the office. It was the Norma Rae moment. All the women stagged a sit in with our signs that said "UNION". They finally gave up. The whole 1950's mentality drives me insane. The upside is at least our firm changed the policy. However, the WTBTS will never do that! How horrible would it be for women to dress in pants, OMG, then next thing you know they will start stating an opinion and thinking for themselves. Better nip that in the bud.

are we free?
by nomoreTRUTHplz ini don't mean this is as a debate, but merely an observation.
i have noticed that a lot (not all) of us post and participate in topics that are nothing but arguements and debates over what should be believed.
i have also been guilty of this, but just began to wonder, are we really free?.

Okay for the person who thinks that Truthz is sad because they do not want to debate, same came be said for those who want to. It is each person's perspective. Some people enjoy debate. Others, debate makes they want to throw up. Is one person right and one wrong. No. Those feelings are not solely held or owned by ex-JWs or current JWs. I know people who do commerical law because they refuse to argue and litigators are known for their arguing and they went into litigation because they love to argue. What makes me wonder sometimes is the lack of compromise or shades of gray. It seems like there is still a lot of black and white mentality going on here.

First, this person is not a JW, although they may associated themselves w/ the congo. As we all know, the witnessing work is essential to JWs and their belief system. And since JWs have thought of thousands of ways in which to witness to people, there are several methods that this person could do it even if they are home bound or with 7 kids or whatever they claim to be true. Considering the amount of time they spend here, why would they not spend the same about of time writing letters or telephone witnessing.
Second, me thinks this person believes they are witnessing to us at this forum. HOLY BATH WATER BATMAN!!! Obviously, they buy into the whole JW thinking of preaching, but they seem to be confused, because I don't think the JWs would be giving them a high five for their activies. My guess would be that if they went to people in the hall (they may or may not go to) and told them up they were up to, that the JWs would tell them their time was better spent out in the preaching work.
Initially this person was slightly frightening in a Ted Kosinski kind of way. Now they are just funny. I am waiting for their book to come out ... How to be a Jehovah's Witness Without Really Being One.
