Did it both ways. Either way though I prayed for not-at-homes! Going out in service really sucked. I can bring myself around to do pretty much anything, but I could not stomach doing that again.

When in FS...
by starfish422 inwhen you went out in service with a group, did you alternate whose call it was, with each house?
or did you have to keep knocking until you found someone at home, then move on to the next person in the group?.
we did it the former way; and thank goodness for rural territories!!

JW delivery man just here
by Mulan ini had to buy my parents a new refrigerator and dishwasher this week, and it was delivered a few minutes ago.
one of the delivery men noticed mom's daily text book, and asked her if she read it every day, to stay close to jehovah.
she immediately asked him "what congregation are you in?

Gopher, I agree 100 %. It reminds me of a story that my mother told me. She had run into a person who was df'd years ago. It had been quite a few years since they had seen each other, and were catching up. Then she had told him that she had da'd herself. He couldn't get away fast enough. Though he had been df'd years ago, and making no effort to come back, he wanted nothing to do with an apostate.

Whats the best anti-war film?
by sleepy in.
just watched the "thin red line" last night, a very artisticaly shot film with great music, that shows the mental aguish suffered by soldiers in war.the contrast between the peace and beaty of the island and its people and the war being fought makes you wonder what war is all about.. it makes me wish that people would sit down and think about what they are actually doing when they talk of sending people to kill for their country..

Black Hawk Down was brutal. Don't know if it was meant to be anti-war, but it was not glorifying it either.

Challenge to Family Members
by Carmel ini am suspect that my family (brothers) may very well be lurking here.
perhaps they will come on and answer why they felt it necessary to support the elders who insisted my brother, who had just come out of an iron lung and was instructed by his doctor not to go to public gatherings attend an assembly?
he became immediately ill due to having virtually no active immune system and died within two days only because the elders insisted the family bring him to the assembly regardless of the medical advice.. so fair family of mine, what say you?

That is just plain sick. How dare they insist he goes under those circumstances. I am so sorry for your loss.

Flashback
by freedom96 ini recently talked to an old friend of mine that i grew up with.
it had been several years since talking to him, and we talked a lot about the people that we both knew in the same hall.
listening to him, made me sad to a degree, for i feel that so many have lost out on a "real life.".

I recently talked to an old friend of mine that I grew up with. It had been several years since talking to him, and we talked a lot about the people that we both knew in the same hall. Listening to him, made me sad to a degree, for I feel that so many have lost out on a "real life."
It has been over 15 years since I stepped foot into that hall, and yet so many of the same people are still there. There were people still attending that I thought were ancient (old) when I was there, and was suprised that they still were alive. There were families with children that I grew up with that were still there. There were some who had left to other halls, but he still knew what they were up to. Still others were young kids when I was there, and now they are older and married, and a very few had left the witnesses all together. But, for the most part, it was like a flashback to all the memories I had growing up there. Not much changed.
So much the same, but yet different in a way too. The guy I was talking to had attended the same hall since he was an infant, and now he is nearing 40. Never married, pioneered for a long time, and just very devoted to the congregation. That hall, the meetings, etc, is his life. He would be completely lost without it.
It made me wonder, how many people are the same way? How many people have lost an entire lifetime and the experiences that life can give by sitting in the same rut going to the meetings, assemblies, field service etc? They do not appear to be happy, and do the same thing day in and day out. Most of these families are exactly as I last saw them. Literally doing the same motions for over 30 years. They have not gotten ahead in life, never moved, and their children doing the same thing.
It is as if almost they don't have a "real life." I have been sitting here trying to figure out how to put that thought into words, and that is the best that I can come up with. Now, are they alive? Of course. Do they have feelings and thoughts and emotions? Of course, though it may be stiffled.
I look at my life now, and those around me. We certainly fill up our lives with work, family, fun, and things like that. We do the same things as many witnesses as far as a normal work day, go to work, come home, eat, etc. However, so much more of their time is spent doing witness activities that there really is little else they can do. And if they are not doing those activities, many times they are feeling guilty, and that overwhelmes them.
It seems to me, that many life long witnesses, do not have a "real life." They are in a rat race of their own, just getting by until that next meeting. I feel sad for them, for I believe they have been cheated out of many wonderful experiences that the WTS just will not allow them. They truly have "separated themselves from the rest of the world."
I look back on that hall, and sadness just seems to dwell there.
Any thoughts?

IS GOD DOING ENOUGH ?
by Blueblades ingod has long been accused of " not doing enough ".
have you ever seen the look in someones eyes,of having been wounded, hurt, and ,worst of all disappointed.perhaps their trust was betrayed.it wasn't fair,it was not right,it wasn't called for.they had a dagger placed in their already fragile heart.. or, have you ever held the hand of someone you love as they passed on and you suffered with them as they gasp their last breath.. or,has the last visit to the doctor brought you devatating news.procedures and options were laid out before you like a menu as you tried to cope with all that was said moments ago about your condition.unwelcome statistics and visions of treatment and suffering dance across your mind like flames in a fire.. questions pile up in innumerable amounts, and again you wonder.....why would a loving god do this?if he's really there can't he stop the madness we experience in the course of this life?.
have you had these questions burning in your heart?is god doing enough?

Maybe this is a testing ground to find out what our charactor is. I don't know, I don't have all the answers. I figure there must be a good reason.

Biblical Names for your children
by JH in.
i changed my question to this: .
what nice biblical name would you give your child, and what was the ugliest biblical name you ever heard a witness give to his child?edited by - jh on 18 january 2003 12:3:36.

There of course are the normal popular names such as Mark, Matthew, John, etc. But I always felt that those people who chose the really biblical names with unusual spelling and obviously biblical in nature were kind of trying to up one on another. "Oh look at me, I named my child (fill in the blank)" thinking they were so much more spiritual. Another way I felt some witnesses just carried it all a bit too far.
