The greatest movie ever made was, "Gone With the Wind". A basically true life story, though slightly over done, that ends more true to life than the common movie. In other words, everyone does not end up being happy for the rest of their life.

a good friend of mine is a former jw.
she is married to an active jw and her children are still jws.
her husband has demanded that they discuss why she is no longer willing to go to meetings, etc... she is wondering what subject would be the best to approach him with first.
I don't think anyone has an obligation to prove the cult is wrong. The cult has the obligation to prove it self true. If I were leaving a cult I think I would explain that the evidence provided to prove it's self true has failed to convince me and further solid evidence is required. Until then I remain unconvinced.
mckay
PS A person doesn't decide to either believe or not believe in a cult or a religion, that comes automatically with the knowledge that is gained or provided. I can't decide one day to start believing in my parent's Mormon religion, I know it's a load of manure. If the facts are lacking then the choice is already made.
.
if jesus only 'had to die' to redeem the whole human race, why then did he have to be tortured to death?.
was that really necessary, and what sick mind decreed that it was necessary?
Why? Darned good question. To hang someone up and let them stay there until they are dead is a typical idea that turns me from Bible based religions. If Jesus is killed then people can be forgiven for their sins, what an idea! There are plenty of things in the OT, such as, kill, kill, kill that is inspired or caused by the most highest of Gods that the killing of Jesus is just another minor example of God's love for us people.

say something philosophical and deep so that we can all benefit from what you're going to say.
My two favorites:
"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts." - Bertrand Russell
And:
"It's fairly easy for an intelligent person to select the few facts that support a false idea, and to seem convincing, especially to people who are predisposed to believe the idea anyway. This assetion assumes no dishonesty or insincerity on the part of the scholar. In fact, it is a very common mistake when one is set on a particular conclusion before examining the evidence. People naturally see what they want to see, making it easy to ignore the 95% of the data that refutes the desired conclusion. It happens to the best of us."
I apply both quotes to my fanatical JW and Mormon sides of the family. It could apply to anyone who are absolutely sure of themselves.

i am looking for my grandfather that i have never met before.
his name is robert funk.
my dad learned his fathers name when he applied for his social security.
averyniceguy, have you tried geneaology web sites? If Robert Funk was 22 years old in 1941 he would be close to 90 now and could very well be dead.
I went to www.familysearch.com and found at least one person who could almost qualify:
Robert Paul FUNK - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: 11 May 1923 Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Ca
You could try it and look for others who may be of interest.
mckay PS In fact you can click on Robert's name above and bring up more info.
this is a letter i recently sent to my jw kids.
i thought the facts interesting:
...are you keeping up with the average?
jgnat: "So, if they stayed at home and read bible stories to their children, they'd have a much higher success rate."
Well actually if they stay at home and do whatever it takes to produce more little JWs would probably work better.

RunningMan: "Don't forget that around 90% of all baptisms are children of witnesses. You don't need to go from door to door to talk to your kids. So, you can actually multiply their efficiency (inefficiency) numbers by a factor of ten."
mckay: So the $122,00 figure per baptism jumps to 1.2 million dollars. I actually do believe that, my wife has pioneered here in a small town for eleven years and has yet to bring someone to the point of baptism. I know many of her JW associates and the story is the same, which is actually good news.
strange no one came this year.
no elders, pioneers or anyone to invite me to the memorial.
i didn't go to the last 2 being that i haven't been to the meetings now for a few years.
"Ask the questions to me. And I will do my best to answer them!"
OK, I have a question if you don't mind. Of the millions of people on earth who have studied the Bible for years, why would the JWs have the correct understanding of it? Why did all the others go wrong and the JWs find the correct path to accurate knowledge? Others have prayed and tried their best to live as God would like them to and yet they have found a different understand of what God wants than have JWs.
I asked my fanatical JW wife this question and she has no answer.

...Are you keeping up with the Average?
For the United States Only:
From the new Year Book -- Baptisms......................28,384
From the new Year Book Hours of Service........184,834,994
Amount of Service per Baptism................................ 6,512
So regular Pioneers with 840 hrs per year you should initiate one baptism every 7.8 years to attain the average.
Or in terms of money at only $15 per hour at 6,512 hours we have a total of $97,680 going towards bringing someone to the point of baptism. Never mind the fact that only about 80% of baptisms are retained for over one year which could bring the total hours spent on one retained member to 8,140 and 9.7 years of pioneer time with a total money value of $122,100.
Treat those newbies kindly, they are expensive.
Aren't caculators fun?

[What a terrible waste of time]
does anyone still have any friends at bethel?
it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.
the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.
I'm a newbie here and an Atheist, but have a wife and four kids fanatical JWs. Last Fall I toured the facilities at Paterson and the Farm with the family. Was very inpressed with the printing facilities. However the talk at that time there was about the Brooklyn staff and what they did if anything. I'm not sure if it has already been mentioned on this thread but could the layoff be mostly at Brooklyn because all the printing is being done at the Farm? I'm a little curious about it and why it's happening if true.
