Every time my son says "Daddy, I love you" to me without being prompted, it makes me smile.

To use the word with its true definition intact:
Evidently, the Watch Tower Society has made many false predictions, then retroactively "spiritualized" them to retain a measure of correctness. -

Armageddon Clubs
by Dune inwhen i was 13, i remember an 18 year old "brother" telling me that he and his friends were part of some pact called the "armageddon club".
the object of this club/pact was to stay single(unmarried) until armaggedon.
the last person to stay single would win something like a sum of money or bragging rights i guess.

blondie, such wild speculation. Always amused me that all that stuff was in there, yet it didn't stop me from saying it myself when I took my vows.
That "Armageddon Club" sounds a lot like these abstinence pacts that evangelicals are getting kids to make these days. -

Yeah, note in the article how unspecific they are about helping non-Witnesses.

"No fear" t shirts, forbidden???
by free2beme inin the 1990's there were a lot of things that had the saying "no fear" on it and one of the local elders figured out that this meant we live life and do things without fear.
so that basically we could try things and take chances, without the normal fear we associate with things in life.
well in a special needs talk they decided that "no fear" t shirts should not be worn by good witnesses and they asked that we not wear them to witness gatherings, or even in life.

undercover, I couldn't agree more.
I happen to live in the general vicinity of a Witness-owned assembly hall that they use for circuit assemblies. Congregations in the local area are periodically invited to clean the assembly hall grounds. Of interest are the instructions for people who plan to volunteer there. I don't have the exact quote handy, because it was in a letter read to the congregation (though it may be posted on the information board.) The gist of the requirements were: No short sleeves, no shorts, only full length pants, no clothes too tight or too loose, nothing revealing. You know how in those "artist's depictions" of Paradise? Where they have a guy in Dockers, a belt, Hush Puppies, a button-up shirt with long sleeves and collars, and a sweater vest, pushing a wheelbarrow full of vegetables and fruit, or hoeing his garden? That's how they want people to show up for yard work at the assembly hall. -

Holidays
by I-follow-the-narrow-path injw's don't celebrate holidays, because they are pagan and would offend jehovah god to partake in them.
what about the memorial though?
i mean, why is it okay to celebrate that?

well... I do my research too. I don't like reading other bibles besides the NWT... it annoys me that they don't use God's name.
Elizabeth, the Society liberally quotes from other Bibles besides the NWT in their own literature. They also obviously read them a lot, to find those quotations for the articles.

I have been in five or six congregations as an adult, and in every one, there was at least one elder who was a small business owner and who was known for shady business dealings, but was still an elder.

What did you seek to acccomplish going door to door?
by Noggin ini am back.
this time i won't lead you to what i want to hear.

Noggin, nobody likes it. It is extremely rare to find someone who enjoys the field ministry work. Even most pioneers will tell you that while they enjoy the life, the special privileges, the prestige of being a pioneer, the "spiritual blessings," the association, etc., they do not enjoy the actual field ministry work itself. Most pioneers work as hard as they can to get Bible studies, as many as possible, because this gives them a break from the field ministry.

Watchtower Predictions
by zgborn ini have a vivid recollection of going to people's doors as a teenager and telling them that bible chronology indicates that 6000 years of human history is due to expire in the fall of 1975 and we can fully expect a radical change in the world at about that time.
while i know that this was not the first watchtower prediction which proved to be incorrect, what i would like to know is, has any watchtower prediction of a future event come to pass?

Kero-kero, you said:
But I do not actually believe they said 1975 would be the date...I think a few brothers and sisters jumped the gun...so to speak.
This isn't true. They DID highly imply, in print, that 1975 would be the date. In a rare, though lefthanded, admission, the Society even acknowledges this in the Proclaimers book:
*** jv chap. 8 p. 104 Declaring the Good News Without Letup (1942-1975) ***
In the years following 1966, many of Jehovah’s Witnesses acted in harmony with the spirit of that counsel. However, other statements were published on this subject, and some were likely more definite than advisable. This was acknowledged in The Watchtower of March 15, 1980 (page 17). But Jehovah’s Witnesses were also cautioned to concentrate mainly on doing Jehovah’s will and not to be swept up by dates and expectations of an early salvation.

Never had any elders directly lie about me, but I've seen it happen to others and I've definitely had them sneak around behind my back.
