So where'd they get this story about Timothy? Is there an Acts of Timothy in the Bible?
They made it up, whole cloth. It was one of the worst things I've ever seen come out of Brooklyn. Timothy rejected the idea of higher education and was used by Jehovah's Organization, traveling with Paul.
my son jake graduated from high school a couple of weeks ago and my dad sent him a nice sum of grad money, as a gift and to tell him how proud he was of him.
also in the card was to remind of his upbringing as a jw and that in time he hopes he embraces it again.
when ginger died he came to the funeral and we started talking again , after 3 years of silence.

I know exactly what you mean. There was a brief period of time when I prayed to God to make me dumber, so that I could just accept everything without questioning it.

what was the most humiliating thing that happened to you as a direct result of being a jw?
for me it was when i was made fun of at school for wearing dresses down to my knees, and tights, when mini-skirts and pantyhose were all the rage.
i remember that i got this orange plaid jumper dress (dates me) from a friend, and i would hide it so that i could change into it in the bathroom at school.
I have never noticed that women are held to a higher standard and greater accountability than men in sexual matters. But then I'm a guy, so maybe I just missed this. It wouldn't surprise me.
My most humiliating experience by far was the sexually explicit tell-all confession session with three elders during my judicial committee. They just sat there and asked sexually explicit questions, and I answered them honestly, without trying to hide anything from them, even volunteering details they missed. I couldn't make eye contact with any of them, and the questions went on for at least two hours. I really felt that the confession would make me feel better, wash me clean in some metaphysical sense. In reality though it just made me feel dirty and ridiculous.

jgnat, ABSOLUTELY. In the business world, there are all types, but the most valuable, most efficient people are always the ones that are willing to listen to their underlings and who are able to be disagreed with. This isn't a secret, either. It's something executives go to multi-thousand-dollar training seminars to learn.
i remember a long time ago hearing the phrase.
during my time as a witness i've known a few, and the amazing thing is that it really is quite true.
the two i really got to know both had problems, in fact they where much in the same personality wise.
W-A-C is the exception to this ;) but most of the Bethelites I have known were like greenhouse-raised plants. After they leave Bethel and go into the real world, they are singularly ill-equipped to deal with real life. Incompetent, lacking useful skills, and completely ignorant of what is expected of them in a real job in the real world. In Bethel it's your spiritual qualifications that matter, not your competence.

I wonder how many other Witnesses take the "spirit-directed" thing that seriously? I know I never did even when I was a True Believer, but others I knew did. I have mentioned this before but I knew a guy who believed that God directed the Society's artists to draw Bible characters the way they actually looked.

i guess it is for some of the rabble that the us call "troops" though.. of course the real problem is not just those on the ground that have committed the latest attrocity.
it is the chain of command that tried to cover it up and all the way up to the president who sanctions bombing of civilian targets with nothing more than rumour for "intelligence".. from now on america, you are on your own.
Yeah the extra training thing is ludicrous. You realize that the Islamic world has known about this for months, in fact since it happened. Western leaders were also aware of it. It's only the Western public that didn't know about it. I was really hoping for more outrage from the White House, but what we got was the same general incurious disinterest we have gotten for every other crisis of this administration.
