My parents had a "feeling" that the end would come in October 1994. I have no clue what this was based on, but I remember this was preceeded by other "feelings" about when the end would come that didn't materialize. I guess they just did it to get keep the feeling of urgency since the end was "just around the corner". My dad was an elder and I don't remember anyone making a stink about it when he voiced his ideas in service... just a big hearty chuckle all around with a "you may be right!"

I'm Famous: I Was Mentioned at the D.C.!
by bavman inhowever, i was mentioned.
i was told today by a very reliable source my dad gave a talk at the latest district convention.
in it, he talked about how he 'has had to endure both his son and daughter leaving the truth.

That really sucks. Typical witness martyrdom. It's such an unnatural thing to shun your children that they have to justify it by making themselves out to be the victims.

The Most Humiliating Thing That Happened To You As A JW...
by Country Girl inwhat was the most humiliating thing that happened to you as a direct result of being a jw?
for me it was when i was made fun of at school for wearing dresses down to my knees, and tights, when mini-skirts and pantyhose were all the rage.
i remember that i got this orange plaid jumper dress (dates me) from a friend, and i would hide it so that i could change into it in the bathroom at school.

I was doing stand up comedy in a Yuk Yuk's search for Canada's funniest amateur comedian and made it to the finals (I'm sure I'm giving myself away to lurkers... but you shouldn't be on here anyways! oh.... and I DON'T CARE ANYMORE), all with the support and encouragement of my many witness friends who would come and cheer me on and drink their (two) faces off. Some of my jokes were less than theocratically approved. An elder from an adjoining cong heard through the grapevine about the gig and showed up and as soon as they saw him ALL of my witness friends stopped laughing and voiced how disgusted they were with me. The elder of course never contacted me with his grievance but went straight to my elders. I was counselled and told the elders how sorry I was I offended my friends and how guilty I was for exposing them to that scene. Next came the inevitable local needs and the corresponding gossip. I felt like the biggest slime. I dropped out of the competition. I know it doesn't compare with what Underbeliever and goodgirl/badgirl had to go through (sick elders getting off on vulnerable people's intimate admissions) but it really embarrased me and made me feel like an evil monster for doing something I love.

Did anyone you know fade before YOU did?
by gaiagirl injust curious as to whether anyone had the experience of a friend or associate at the kingdom hall fade away or discontinue attendance without having been disfellowshipped first?
i did have that happen, and i wondered why they suddenly weren't around anymore.
what were you told by others regarding this absence?

My big brother elder constantly complained about people moving into his territory, receiving their cards and never coming to meetings (hello! they were fading!). I was fortunate to have a friend who had faded (though he was never baptised) "coach" me through it. I hadn't even the faintest clue that this could be done (I always assumed they'd find me). I now realize he knew that with time and distance from the org I would really care less whether they found me or not. I'm really blessed to have this friend in my life.

Active first (we must beware of slipping into inactivity), but I haven't been a member that long so I like checking out people's profiles and post history.

Oh please, please let them break with tradition and make this a musical! Nothing like 45 minutes of lip synching and ridiculous overdone gesturing. Woops, almost had an independant thought there...

I can relate. Kids do not think of consequences. For me it was getting my parents off my back because I couldn't handle their "encouragement" and "reminders" that Elder joe's son was my age and was getting baptised at the upcoming assembly. I didn't think of the long term consequences of making a life changing decision at 14, and the elders didn't help by coaching me through a bunch of questions I didn't have the answer to (nor did I care). I think a lot of it depends on how much pressure her Witness family is exerting. There is such a "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. Since she is a normal teen, the best you can do is let her know what will be expected of her after taking this step, and then stay close by, always reassuring her that she has a place to turn to if she feels she's made a mistake (a liberty the org does not grant).
