What leaving really means
by under_believer inrecently my family had occasion to attend a function held in our honor, an event commemorating a certain achievement.
it was thrown by close relatives, witnesses all.
it included parents, grandparents, cousins, siblings, auties and uncles.

missed out
by aoxo inbecause i grew up in the truth i missed out on a whole lot of kids at school that i could have been great friends with.
also a couple of girls that i could have had a first relationship with.
i missed out on family moments each year exchanging gifts with relatives that i could have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) seeing during holidays.

I feel terrible for all of you who had parched JW childhoods. I was in my mid-teens when my family got going with the JWs, which pretty much killed my social life at school. But at least I could look back on a normal (more or less) childhood--friends, Christmas, nice neighbors, birthdays. I think those memories are what grounded me throughout my JW experience and allowed me to get out fairly quickly without too much damage. It must be so much tougher when you've had the "truth" stuffed down your gullet since birth.

Satanists, do you fear them or trash them?
by greendawn inare you afraid of the power of occultists and satanists?
do you think their magical arts can truly harm people?
or are you confident that their power can easily be neutralised by reciting biblical verses or by wearing a crucifix?

I think it's a mistake to lump all occultists with Satanists. If you do any research into neo-paganism and wicca, you will find most are responsible, caring people. True, some are a little weird, but there are plenty of weird Christians, too. I think we know at least one Christian group that fits that description. Do some reading before you label the occult as evil.

Society myths
by greendawn inwhat are some false stereotypes and myths, recent or past, in your society?
things that are widely believed to be true but are in fact erroneous.

I'm an American and proud to be an American. But I get tired of rabid patriot-types who insist that the U.S. has the best of everything in the world. I think that's a myth and a potentially dangerous myth. I've done some traveling in my life and done some comparisons here and there, and found that there's plenty of great stuff elsewhere that the U.S. could do well to imitate.

Thanks, Lady Lee. For about a year after I left the org, I had that floating sensation you describe. I would look at a tree, for example, and think that I didn't really know what it was, because for years I had believed it was just one of Jehovah's creations. Everything seemed new and strange; I had no anchor to serve as a fixed point by which other things could be understood.
The feeling passed in time, and I found new, non-religious, ways to make sense of the world. But it's good to know that the weird feelings I had then are common to people who have just escaped from cults. -

Illegal immigrants and the increase in JW #s in the USA
by cyberguy ini asked a jw fiend of mine, an elder in a spanish congregation in the usa (ohio), how many of those attending were illegal immigrants.
i was a little surprised by his answer that nearly all of them were!
i suspect this is true of most of the jw spanish congregations in the usa.

I've read many posts about how JWs appeal to the poor and poorly educated by conferring on them a status they could not obtain any other way. The Bible says the poor will always be with us -- I'll bet the WTS is really counting on that!

Speaking to an Elder tomarrow, I'm almost free!!!!!!!
by drew sagan inmajor developments in my world, just wanted to let you all know about it.
i'm meeting with the elder tomarrow afternoon.
i'm going to stick heavy to the watchtowers interpretation of matthew 24 and how it is unbalanced, sensationalized and out of touch with any historical evidence or respect for the bible.

It's good your decision is made and even better if your wife goes with you. That will make a huge difference in how you cope afterward.
Just a word of caution: It will be wonderful having your freedom again, but based on my own experience and from the experiences of those on this board, expect that things will probably be a little rocky at first. Residual guilt and doubt may alternate with relief and exhilaration to make your first months a roller-coaster ride. But it will even out. Looking forward to hearing about your progress in the near future.
