  if they were truly sinning, you would think it would've been clearly expressed in the 10 commandments and the law.

  instead, god blessed those involved in adultery and fornication..

  JW would answer it was in order to fulfill God’s purpose. Polygamy was tolerated in order for the Israelites to grow fast to a big nation. I think that’s the explanation I read once in the WT.

  Yes that is the explanation I heard.

  But think about it, polygamy of itself, does not cause the population to increase any faster.

  About 50% of people are female, now those female can became pregnant by the other 50% of the population or they all can become impregnated by one male. Either way, they can't pump babies out any faster.

  But if you steal or buy women from other tribes, then yes, you can make your tribe grow much faster due to the much higher female to male ratio.

  So the JW excuse is dependant on stealing/buying foreign wimmen.

  Shawshank Redemption and leaving Jehovah's Witnesses

  i doubt very seriously that i am the first to make the connection of exiting jw's and much of the movie "shawshank redemption".. frequently, the injustice that many experience as baptized members of jehovah's witnesses cause them to want to resign, to leave.. but it is a prison of sorts.

  if you leave and announce it, you are shunned.

  and no one will talk to you.. shawshank is such a remarkable movie to me for its simple, underlying theme; finding meaning in our suffering, and never stopping the fight against injustice, esp against our own freedom.. the best part of the movie is the line "you can either get busy living, or get busy dying.".

  I think Brooks, who just couldn't handle life on the outside can stand in for all those that find it easier to stay in a dysfunctional religion.

  Or the ones who get tossed out by DFing.

  And can't handle it on the outside, and being "spiritually dead", so they do what Brooks did.

  How did you find the strength to leave?

  to all of you exjws, i'm sure you've been asked this question one way or the other many times and i'm sure the answer is different for many of you, i'd like to know directly from you never having a chance to hear or read many exjw's answers to this.

  knowing that you would be cut off from your family and friends and other consequences for your decision to leave, how did you ever get the strength to do it?

  i mean really, i find it fascinating to know that there are so many of you who were at one time very devout, if not at the very least loyal to one of the most successful mind-contol organizations ever who believed all if not most of what the society taught and still you found the courage to risk everything once you accepted that it isn't what it claims to be.

  As indoctrinated as I was, I still am surprised that i ever achieved the ability to leave.

  Honestly, it's my proudest achievement and i doubt very seriously that I will ever be able to top it.

  It was a long, long road out, but what finally gave me the strength, was the day i realized that my children was going to have the same kind of life as mine. And that was not acceptible to me.

  You could treat me like shit because the GB trained me well. But I was not going to tolerate my children being treated that way, there had to be a better way, and I started searching.

  while a dub I had some serious life problems, I was raised in a poor abusive family, I married a man that was gay, abusive and very emotionally distant.

  I remember the first time in my married life that i went to an elder for help. He immediately told me to stop watching soaps. I told him that I didn't watch soaps and again tried to explain my situation.

  He again admonished me that soaps were destructive and how women would watch them and get a distorted view of how men should treat them.

  I told him again, "I don't watch soaps"

  He again started ranting about how bad they were and how i should NEVER watch them, not even occasionally.

  I assured him, that I NEVER watch them, I am not even tempted as they hold NO interest to me.

  He didn't seem to believe me. I walked away just confused, why the hell wouldn't he listen to me?

  Fast forward a few months, I finally picked another elder to approach and ask for help. And unbelievably, I had the same convo with that elder too.

  So there you have it, I was beaten and sexually assaulted by my stepdad, my husband was emotionally distant and abusive, but the real culprit was that I watched soaps, case closed.

  Damn, I'm so glad I get to make my own decisions now, cause there a hell of a lot better then what the elders would pull out of their collective asses.

  Being the "good" elder put a face on the organization that it simply didn't deserve.

  This is true.

  The nice elders helped me to stay in the org.

  The elders that followed the real rules of the org are the ones that helped me to leave.

  Thank you all you asshole elders that towed the company line, you helped me see the light.

  Nice elders? naw, no thanks to you. You kept convincing me to stay, you were no help at all, you just kept lulling me into unconsciousness.
