In a press release dated November 21, 2007, Jehovah's Witnesses' Office of Public Information stated: "In the United States, over 80,000 elders currently serve in over 12,300 congregations ... During the last 100 years, only eleven elders have been sued for child abuse in thirteen lawsuits filed in the United States; In seven of these lawsuits against the elders, accusations against the Watchtower Society itself were dismissed by the courts."
Please also note that the Society here is only refferring to ELDERS, they are not including CO's DO's MS's and just the plain old JW rank and file molester.
It's like saying "We have only had 11 red haired members in our congregations that have ever been sued for molesting."
Yeah, so what! Redheads only make up a small fraction of the congregations! What about all the non-red-headed molesters?

In Total How Much $$$ Will You Spend On XMas Gifts?
by minimus inin total, the last few years, for family and a few friends, i spent over $2000.. this year, i expect to spend no more than $1000.. will you spend more or less this year?.
-
aSphereisnotaCircle
Last year we spent about $600.
Which is way to much in my opinion as about $300 of that was obligatory gifts to people I never see the rest of the year.
I've tried every way possible to get out of the obligatory part (like donating to charities in the name of the recipient), but my inlaws have a way they do things and to not follow the tradition ends up in hurt feelings.
sigh, I really hate Xmas

What's Your View on Tipping?
by minimus intypically, i give at least 20% on my total bill.
if the service or the waitress is especially charming, maybe more.. i wonder, when you sit at a bar/restaurant and have a meal and drinks and then order a take out ( i do this for my mother quite often) are you supposed to tip on everything, including the takeout??.
when i stay in a hotel, i typically leave 2 or 3 dollars per day for the maid.

"" I have a problem with tipping a hairdresser who PER HOUR makes double or triple what I make. Who started this tradition? I HATE it. But I don't want to seem cheap. But if they are giving me a $200 hair cut and color and it takes them 3-5 hours, that's A LOT of dough. And not to mention they are doing cuts and styles in between while I'm sitting under the dryer. NOOOOO!!!! This has to stop! ""
BlueSaphire, Hairdressers are not employees, usually they are independant contractors. So her fee works out to be a generous amount per hour but she must pay her rent, insurance, supplies, advertising, etc out of that amount. She is running a business and has expenses she must pay first. And also, being self employed, means she also has a certain amount of down time when she's at work, but not earning a penny. hairdreesers do not make much money unless they are talented at their work AND good at business. You have to be good at both, or you make no money.

I eloped with my first husband. It was our first un-chaperoned date and I had to be back home by 9:30 pm. I arrived at 9:35. My dad had my stuff packed and on the front porch (along with me and the hubby) by 10:00. It was not pretty.
You eloped and it made you late so your Dad kicked you out?
Or, your Dad kicked you out, and it led to you eloping?
Either way, sounds like an awful way to get your adult life started.

'God Bless You' When You Sneeze?
by willyloman inwe're all familiar with the wt's "history" of the origin of the phrase "god bless you" ("geshundeit" in german) in response to someone's sneezing.
the wts says it originated with the pagan belief that the soul leaves the body when you sneeze and the "bless you" is part of a superstition to protect you from demon invasion.
given that background, jw's don't say anything when someone sneezes.

Those are great Lady Lee, and just the sort of thing that kids love best!
One day my 3 year old was not feeling well, coming down with a cold. Right before bedtime, on impulse, I went to my sewing machine and withen a few minutes I cut out a heart shape about 8 inches by 8 inches, sewed the edges, filled half full with flax seeds and sewed shut. I stuck it in the microwave for one minute before i gave it to her and she was delighted! She had something warm to snuggle up to in her cold bed.
I will always remember her baby voice asking me, "did you make it like a heart because you yuv me?"
