i was wondering...what un-written rules have y'all come across ?
the rules that have gotten you or others in trouble?
including all the "grey rules," that are open to interpretation by indubviduals and committee's.
Strangely enough, I know several old "friends" who have not gotten married in the Kingdom Hall because they think the insides are ugly (very true)......and its ok now.
in 1999 when i got married, it was "get married in the KH or else"
unwritten rules...hmmmm...well, for the Philadelphia, PA area it was:
no long sideburns
no beards (of course)
no 2 door cars (this was loosening up as I left 2 years ago)
matching pants and suit jacket to do mics (no slacks w/ different colored jacket)
yesterday, i was on the phone with a friend i met while i was down in florida.
we had a nice long chat about how she doesn't feel as though she wants to be a jw anymore, and i gave her good guidence, and one of the peices of good guidence i gave her was "do not worry about your reputation, your reputation is held in low esteem by people who are in themselves in low esteem.
" she then told me about how my reputation was slammed down in florida.
I'm not really sure, since we moved 3,000 miles away. I know at one point my mom was wondering out loud to group of people at the Buckingham Assembly Hall if I was going to start smoking??? Also some people seemed to think that I was only following my wife Michalina's lead....beats me though. I don't really care. After one trip home to PA over thanksgiving, one thing i do know, is that JW's are nuts (all of the affairs in the halls, backstabbing....blah!) and I don't care what they say about me!
while responding to another thread, i was thinking about how so many of us talk about trying to help "believing dubs" out from the clutches of the wt, while at the same time, it occurred to me that we probably all have different motivations for doing so.
as for me, i am motivated to get my parents out because i think they have the right to know "the whole story" - not just the candy-coated version the wt espouses, so they can make better decisions about how they want to live the rest of their lives.
right now the wt makes all their life decisions for them - including whether or not they should look at what the "other side" has to say about them.
I think it someone has doubts they will find websites such as this, or seek out the Franz books. For people who don't have doubts, its a waste of time to try and convince them that its not the truth. I think thats exactly what is so annoying about JW's...jamming propaganda down someone's throat. Even if their beliefs are misguided, its a waste of time to try and convince them otherwise....you are just proving to them how "evil apostates are"

to get attention, because of low self esteem, because they like this site but feel stuck in a rut, lots of reasons. of course most xjw's are nuts in different ways - myself included - its just a way of life in the xjw - jw scheme of things

as a follow on to my post on the feb 15th wt, guard against deception, i thought it would be interesting to summarize some common misconceptions the society has about apostates.. the society says .
satan has long used apostates in his efforts to seduce god's servantsi can only think of judas, and really, are we assuming that satan is influencing everyone that opens their eyes to this religion?.
apostates claim to worship jehovah, but they reject the visible part of his organizationapostates can worship jehovah.
some things I've learned about apostates since leaving the JW's:
1. Most are bitter people who can't let go (does not apply to some people, such as Princess and family and others I've met)
2. Most have an "agenda" just like JW's. Exactly the same as JW's, just with a mindset against

I think its a terrible idea. If you do that, you are just as bad as the JW's...shouldn't you strive to be above all of that nonsense?
