What worked for me:
1. Stay out of trouble, or at least trouble with possibility of getting found out.
2. Promise to get your hours to 10 a month, whether or not you actually do it.
3. Lead the group a few times and conduct a few times. Come early to meetings.
4. Have a grandfather with enormous pull on the BoE.
5. That's it! You are an MS now!

Lifetime raised JW's did you find your parents sick with obsession?
by restrangled inwhat has come back to me and what i have realized through this website is that my mother was probably mentally very sick with this religion for most of her life.. it was a sickening obsession to obey, tattle, feel extreme guilt, turn in family members, and never, ever measure up no matter what she did.
endless months of pioneering, meeting attendance and studying for meetings were not enough .....ever....she is now 73 years old and still trying to pioneer in the exhausting heat of florida.
in her full time pioneering days she came down with breast cancer.

Yeah, my folks are on anti-depressants, among the pills that they take. Although my folks never went to that extreme of feeling guilty for not being able to pioneer, but some discretion is needed.
The days are hotter than last summer. My mom tried to go out in FS and ended up not feeling good the rest of the day. I think she should just cool it until the weather cools down, but of course, the guilt will probably make her want to pound the pavement again... -

Newbie intro
by Just as I am ini have been lurking here for a few months now, reading all the net soup archived postings and wanted to make an intro.
i've never posted to a forum before, so please excuse anything not in proper form!
like many of you, i was born and raised jw, third generation.

Welcome to the forum! Don't worry, your post was well done. :)
I know what you mean about little JW-inspired doctrines creeping into mind. It's not easy to juggle taking in a new way of thinking when the old way opposes you, but I think all of us are going through that in some way or another...so you have many people who can sympathize with you here. -

Yeah, the sad thing is one of my friends isn't a kiss-up, but he's a genuinely nice person and wanted to become an MS. When we were in Mexico, and apart from our other friend that went with us, he asked me how I became an MS. I had to tell him what was really going on.
I told him, "I made casual mention of wanting to be an MS some time ago, to look as if I weren't stagnating. They got me on the program and told me to keep the hours up, the mischief down, and the assignments on-track. I kept doing what they wanted, and they made me an MS without any fuss."
"Well, I told the elders I wanted to reach out for more privileges and that I had being an MS as a goal. When I told them that, they told me to go read the scriptures and wait on Jehovah."
"Well, you don't have my grandfather to pull for you on the BoE. I suspect it's because I keep out of trouble and because of my family connections that I got the fast-track. Trust me, I didn't have to try very hard. I just did what they told me to do."
I suspect he was disheartened a little to hear that. But I couldn't gloss over it; I was a beneficiary of nepotism and that's how the game is played... -

"Frequently the really spiritual jws were not invited b/c, well, they would have ratted them out."

Yup. A few conventions ago we had a needs part on the "problem with Doubles." The brother mentioned a group of (I'm guessing) ex-jws who called themselves "Doubles," for living a double-life. I had heard no such thing before, but regarded it as truth so I listened intently. Apparently they would have parties and then determine if someone was a "Double," whereby they could gain access to the real party where there was booze, sex, drugs, rock 'n roll, etc.
A few weeks after I heard it, everyone I talked to had heard no such thing either, so it was probably fake or just a local problem in one congregation. There is a grain of truth to it though: "Super Sisters" and other pioneers--usually one in the same--will all be at one type of gathering and then the "cool" people will be at other ones. And ne'er shall the twain meet at the same gathering unless it is a big congregation picnic.
I know what everyone's talking about though. When it's a "Super Sister" friendly gathering, someone will bust out a ukelele or accordion and start to yodel org songs. Then comes the Bible charades, or the Bible wordsearch, or the popular Bible games!
I go to those parties to keep up appearances, but know better than to stick around after the food is served. -

Mind control, evil and projection - the Law of Attraction
by DjSadhu inhey everybody, i just signed up.
i'm djsadhu, ex-jg, raised jg, quit/kicked at age 16, now 30.
i have some food for thoughts that you may find interesting, i hope you will find this a refreshing point-of-view.

SirNose586
I agree with a few points you make on the Law of Attraction, but as for the witnesses...I don't think they have any power to make the world more negative. They aren't the ones doing the actual work of spreading fear and death. You give them more credit than they are worth. As for being focused on that stuff in their personal lives, then yes, witnesses are really obsessed with tragic acts as a way to justify their eschatological beliefs.

My story: Getting away from the Muggles
by Wordly Andre ini was born into a jw home, my parents converted from catholicism a few years before my birth, so like many of you i never grew up in a home we the future was discussed in a joyful or hopeful manner, instead the doom of the end of this system of things was constant reminder that god was going to destroy the earth.
in my preteen years i remember my parents trying to rush me into being baptized before the next convention, and even would try to entice me with talking about a party and presents, i resisted, to which i had brothers trying to study with me after school, even waiting for me outside my elementary school, follow me home and talk about the end of the world and that i better be baptized, i think eventually they gave up on me and thought that i was too young.
later when i was in high school same games, although this time more intense.

"When I was 15 I was friends with my sisters JW friends and her mom accused me of having immoral thoughts about her daughters breasts, the elders had a 2 hour meeting talking about my thoughts about this girls breasts, now this meeting went from just plain bizarre to ridiculous, I was like I wish some of my friends were here, because I am sure that the stories I told my friends about going up with JW’s they must have thought I was making this crap up, anyway back to the meeting, there were like I think five elders, this girls mom, her sister, and a friend, and on my side they requested my dad to be apart of the meeting, I was just sitting there in shock, I was not scared of the elders but more of my dad, and the beating to come, the elders basically said that because of my immoral thoughts of this young sisters breasts that I was now bad association from other youths in the hall, and that they would have to announce it at the meeting."
--Wordly Andre
Wow, that's a first. I've never heard of a JC for boobs. I think a great counter to that would've been the Song of Solomon. They talk about tits for like, half the book!!
Anyway, you'll have fun here meeting this crazy gang of folks. Welcome, and glad to hear you got out of the Org. -

What is your favorite WT quotation?

Those quotes are all golden! Funny stuff, I'll tell ya.
"If the organs [of your body] are diseased, heal them by correcting your diet. Avoid the use of aluminum cooking utensils and alum baking powders as they are injurious to your health, poisoning your blood stream... Sleep on the right side or flat on your back, with the head toward the north so as to get benefit of the earth's magnetic currents. Avoid serum inoculations as they pollute the blood stream with their filthy pus.... Stop chewing gum, as you need the saliva for your food."
--The Golden Age, Nov. 12 1929, p. 107
