in alanf's thread on whether or not thirdson (or whoever!
) is a gb apologist, there are several posts discussing the intelligence of jws.
on that subject, this is what i observed from over 30 years as a jw:
Yeah, some of 'em could stand to use some education. It makes me want to tear my hair out when I hear some of these ignorant Sunday study comments. There are smart people in my hall...but either they busy themselves with WTS busywork or they are just there because it's all they've ever known.
For example, I pointed out the "old light" on the official website to a friend (whom I would consider smarter than the average dub). I wasn't accused of apostasy. It just made him think. I can think of at least 20 other people who would've clammed up or accused me of apostasy, given the contradiction there.
I do okay in a couple of areas. Whatever intellectual prowess I once had was dulled considerably. But at least this much is true: when truth hits me in the face, I call a spade a spade. Labeling all apostate literature as horrible stuff just makes me want to check it out more. That's the only way you can find out. I remember it hurt at first to see bad stuff written about the society...but a spade is a spade.
.
anybody have the answer?
do they ask for the "privilege" or are they asked?.
Maybe there's an application....
1. If someone has second thoughts, could you prevent them from escaping the pool? Y/N
If no, why not?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. If someone you knew were to come into the baptismal pool, would you jokingly hold their head under water for a long time? Y/N
If yes, could you keep it to 30 seconds or less? Y/N
3. An elderly sister gingerly wades into the pool. You...
a. Do nothing.
b. Lovingly help her out, making sure to be gentle when performing the baptism.
c. Stand around and pretend to help while other brothers do choice b.
4. If you spotted a young sister in line who has indecently dressed, would you push the other brothers out of the way to baptize her? Y/N
If yes, when would you like your judicial committee to begin?____________________________________________________________________
5. Do you urinate in the pool? Y/N
If yes, would you blame a younger brother? Y/N
some time ago, i posted an open letter of gaila nobles and since then many new people are on this site.
i think it would be worth it for you to take a look at it, and think about it, especially those still associated.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/20589/1.ashx.
click on it to read.. outaservice
Oh, that got me right in the ticker. And if whomever she wrote the letter for reads it and doesn't get the same reaction...that's even sadder.
i need some help in understanding something that's been bothering me for a while, please give me some insight on this.
i often see posts here where some take shots at elders and witnesses for working as janitors and window washers, and it's always bothered me.
i mean does it really matter what they do for a living as long as they are making a living honestly?
I completely identify with the window-washer/janitor joke. I know a brother, an MS, who works for himself as a janitor. Nice guy. A bit distracted though. No one I'd go to for advice, if he became an elder, which I don't see happening.
I don't agree with that ruling. Screw American football, make 'em do the time ASAP. Pranks are funny until someone gets hurt and possessions need to be repaired.
it's been out a while and i know it's already been commented on here but i really enjoyed the village.
the creation of fear and the control that it allows must surely strike a chord.. recently i saw christian bale in the machinist.
bloody awesome!
A Clockwork Orange.
hi all, i've been thinking a lot lately about the chapter in coc where ray is talking about double standards and was wondering how many exist in the organization today.
one, that i've noticed is that employment issues seemed to be addressed differently depending on which congergation you are in.
for instance, in a congregation in one city, a brother might be removed from a position if he goes to work for a fire department or ems service because the shift work would require missing to many meetings, where as in another congergation you may have a respected elder that has such employment and everything is cool.
I know what you're talking about. There's a very nice older couple who have done many things for the organization. They were responsible for starting a congregation in Israel and one in South Dakota. A few months ago they got my sister's help in selling some old vinyls of theirs on eBay, because they needed the extra cash.
Even though they say time and time again that this congregation is the "most loving they've seen anywhere"--and they have certainly seen enough of the world to make that statement--they've got to scrounge to make ends meet. And believe me, these two have simplified their lives in an admirable way.
It just needs to be explained: Jehovah can't pay your bills every month. Don't count on those "miracle checks in the mail."
in his article at freeminds on when prophecies fail, about the witnesses and cognitive dissonance, randy watters wrote the following, including an insightful quote from barbara harrison grazzutti.
it may seem incomprehensible how the witnesses could ignore the implications of each disconfirmation.
outsiders view the witnesses as lacking common sense for not leaving the organization after numerous failures.
Hooray for teh int4rw3b!!! *hugs the internet*
Same here man, no internet, no clue what to do!

Lady Liberty....how sad that your friend was refused the position because he's taking care of the nest egg. My guess is that it depends on how liberal your region/congregation is. My folks put into their 401k plan (they probably don't talk about it, though). I've never heard of that sort of counsel happening in my area.
