The Name of God
by ClassAvenger ini have a friend who is a jehovah witness.
once we started talking about prayer, and i told him that we referred to god as 'lord', or 'god', or 'father', for reverence or respect, although we did not have prohibited to say jehovah.
he said that i was wrong, that it was necessary to state that the prayer was for jehovah and not any other god.

Yes, I am fairly certain. In most countries the name is pronounced as a deritive of the name Jehovah. I imagine that a Hebrew speaking JW could possibly us Yahweh but I don't think there are any. The point being made is that they want to teach us that Yahweh is translated into English as Jehovah....yet your average rank and file would never consider using the Hebrew version. It is not a matter of prefering the English, it is more like a superstition as you said. That luck charm name.....
This is exactly why the name of Jesus coming from the Greek Zeus does not bother me. It is not how we pronounce the name that matters but if we know whom we are speaking of in an intimate sense. A relationship, in other words.. love, dj

I want to tell my parents
by Freedomrules ini'm debating how/or is i should tell my parents about my not believing in the org anymore.
i haven't been an active witness for 8 years, and my family and i celebrate bdays and thanksgiving and a couple other holidays (i can't do halloween or christmas, nothing to do with being an ex-wit, i just have personal issues with those).
i know they will be devastated, might cut me off.

Even if your family didn't shun you, it would still most likely turn into a problem for you. In my own family constant efforts are made to change my mind. It makes for an uneasy relationship to say the least. You always need to defend yourself or just ignore their ramblings which is hard sometimes. They will never just be comfortable with the fact that you disagree. They may stoop to trying to "help" your child/ren privately...It is a messy situation no matter what. Talking about the lack of love sometimes can cause arguments as well. They seem to defend even that by claiming to be imperfect. Only you know your family but mine surprised me by being so cruel. Love to you and I hope it all works out. Even pray about it and only give them love. Try your hardest not to succumb to arguments over it. That sounds easier than it is. Bear in mind that you will be viewed as "evil", even if it isn't said directly. love, dj

I went to the meeting Sunday.............
by integ inthe public talk was on "loyalty"- ...speaker gave examples of loyalty in bible times...i.e: esau and jacob...esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew...not loyal of him.
david was loyal, even though he "erred" when he messed around with bathsheba, then plotted to murder her husband.
we need to be loyal.

So sad as usual. Subtle threats to frighten the sheep from making sure of all things. It is truly a cultish mindset. You never hear that in a church. The jw's are paranoid and guilty and that is why they have to make these kind of admonitions aka threats.

Tyler,
I agree with you that the name Jehovah is merely a translation from the Hebrew name, Yahweh into English. Although, we do not know if either is correct. I do however, want to point out that you would never hear a jw say it is ok to pray to Yahweh. That makes no sense and just goes to show that the jw's use the name of God as a lucky charm. -

LOL@ prcapone.....what else is new?
Stink,
As you know, I was coming from the view that the bible teaches us that God has about sin. imo, that is a very poor analogy. You can have the last word here. I know that you have that need....have fun.

Stink,
The NT teaches that all sin is sin and there is no difference. There are no levels except the unforgiveable sin against the holy spirit it seems that folks generally don't live too long after that one. ie annanais and saphira. (sp)

to add to larc's comment about the name in the NT...it is important for you to know that your friend was probably taught that the name Jehaovah was only put in their NT when it was a quote from the OT. This is not true at all but he doesn't know any better. The name is inserted in plenty of verses that were not quotes but they just needed to put it there to distort the deity of Jesus.
There are plenty of places to get the info with page#'s etc. Try doing a search.
