Welcome! Nice to read your story, I look forward to hearing more about your journey of discovery and healing. Its amazing that you realized ttatt just by reading the Watchtower literature, after studying personality disorders. I agree, the WTBTS is a dysfunctional, out of control entity.

Quirky1 - don't even think about it!
I am sorry things/ are looking bad right now, but that is not the answer. Don't let this evil organization claim another victim. Please, please, talk to someone about this. You can PM me if you wish to discuss. I have had depression, I've been there - it can get better.
Remember, living well is the best revenge!

My grandson is baptized SDA. He even wants to go to a SDA college to study divinity and hopes to be a minister. He does have some problems with SDA doctrine, so his long term goal is to have his own non denominational church some day. I haven't seen any evidence of it hurting him any, he seems quite happy and normal. He has gone to SDA school his whole life. At least they have activities for the young ones, unlike the JWs. He has even gone to Mexico to build a church.

Sitting Still at Meetings has Become an Impossibility
by venusinfauxfurs insince i know the truth about jw, and still have to go to meetings for family reasons (and because i don't want to leave my friends, either) i get so sick in my chair in the hall.
i can't pay attention, i can't sit still knowing it's all such a waste of time and a big fat lie.
i get weird symptoms like: the feeling that i'm going to almost pass out, very sweaty or very cold, and weak legs though i'm sitting down, and the urge to get up and run away.

There are breathing techniques you can learn that will help you through these panic attacks, or whatever it is you are feeling. Close your eyes (if you can do it discretely) slowly breath in through your nose for a count of 8 seconds (one thousand one, one thousand two, etc.) Hold for eight seconds, slowly breath out through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat two or three times as needed. Also you can just keep on breathing in through your nose, out through your mouth for as long as you want. Think of something calming, like the beach, visualize and think about the details of the beach (or other place), the waves, etc. Breathing technique can help you through these issues. I meditate every day.
I think what is happening is that one part of your brain is telling you this is BS and to get the hell out, while another part of your brain is getting the JW brainwashing "tape" that is telling you to go along with it. That conflict is creating stress. This is something you need to work out in therapy. In the meantime, breathing can help you get through.

Celebrating Christmas?????
by DATA-DOG ini am just curious, and not judging.
if you are a christian and you know that december 25th is not jesus' birthday, and may have pagan roots, then why celebrate it?
i was raised a dub as most of you know, and have learned the ttatt so i know how wrong they are about a lot.

Reasons I celebrate Christmas:
I do not think Jehovah or Jesus care, it's celebrating the birth of Christ, so it does make me think of spiritual things, so how is that bad?
The so called "pagan origins" are exaggerated, and the customs have long since lost their pagan meaning.
The aribitrary date doesn't bother me, its as good a date as any, and the one most people observe. The JWs accept "Jehovah" as Gods name, even though we do not know the correct pronunciation, and Jehovah is an aribrary one. I don't see the difference.
I like baking, decorating and gift giving and it gives me an excuse to do it.
I like the music.....well, some of it anyway.
My husband makes a great Santa Claus.
I love the smell of evergreen branches.
My family (at least the ones who will talk to me) all celebrate, so it gives us a chance to all get together.
Its good for my business (I sell antiques and home decor).

Suicide - How many do you know within the JWs
by Lady Lee inthw wts likes to play games with their statistics.
one interesting but truly tragic is the number of jwhovah's witnesses who commit suicie.. now i suspect that if a person commits suicide shortly before or after they are disfellowshipped then the elders would say that person wasn't a witness or that they had done something so terrible that they were too guilty to admit it and by their action of committing suicide they pretty much declared they were no longer a jw.. yup fancy talk to make sure any crap didn't fall on them.. so my question.. do you know of cases like this?
if so then can you answer a few more questions.. had this person been dfed or in real danger of being dfed or whatever the equivalent is if they were never baptized?.

Scott,
Yes, I feel sorry for him, even if he was a bit of a tough father. I think it was a combination of his own perfectionism and the requirements of a heartless organization. No matter how you may try, you cannot force anyone into a religion, but the expectation of the Watchtower is that you could, especially for elders. The JWs have the worst retention rate of any religion, but as a JW, you don't know the odds are against it. The result is broken hearts, broken families and in some cases, suicide. This is the legacy of the WTBTS

One older sister, sweet as can be. She had an unbelieving mate. She was distraught because her son-in-law divorced her daughter and got custody of the grandchild. Shot herself in the head. Not one Witness (other than me) called, or contacted her family in any way.
Elder, killed himself because none of his children accepted the religion. He was very strict and dictatorial, the kids took of as soon as they turned 18.
Older elder, real evil jerk. His adult children got awarded custody of their mother due to his extreme mental and physical abuse.
Young boy, 16, threw himself in front of a train.
My own daughter attempted twice. Fortunately I was almost out by then, never told the elders, and wouldn't have let them near her anyway. She is fine now, not a JW. Cant really blame the religion totally , but I think it was a factor.
I think, in general this religion pushes people toward suicide because of the Black and white thinking, if you are not "whole souled" you are nothing. Also the fear of dealing with mental health professionals, due to the possibility of "bringing reproach on Jehovah". Plus the sheer ignorance of most of the elders when it comes to mental health. The disfellowshiping is no doubt a huge factor. If you have depression issues anyway, it doesn't help that you are shunned by your friends and family.

Are You Ever Tempted To Talk To JWs When You See Them?

They came to my door yesterday. I said "Jehovah's Witnesses, yes you are the ones that told me I didn't need to go to college because Armageddon was coming". The woman tried to continue the conversation but I shut the door on them. Not exactly a great response, but I did say something. I figure if they are going to keep coming to my door, I will keep saying things to them.

Lets be friends.....
by snare&racket inok lets leave the atheism, belief in god aside for a bit and remember that we all have something in common and that we are a unique group of people on this very big planet.. lets all have a giggle about our old lives,.
what was the craziest, most laughable thing that we used to do or observed as a jw ?.
was it just me that used to add echo in the sound booth, just for giggles?

One warm summer day at the Sunday meeting, my 18 month old says to me (quite loudly) "I want a beer!". I told her to shush, so she says, louder, "No really, I want a beer!". I was trying not to laugh, when the brother behind me says "don't feel bad, I want one too". I never figured out why she said that. As far as I know she had never had beer or even root beer.

Old time JW's did some very devout JW's refuse to eat pizza with pepperroni because they believed "blood" was in the pepperroni?
by booker-t ini have never heard this before until i read a life story of an ex-jws and how some jws in the past refused to eat pepperoni pizza because they thought blood was in pepperoni.
i do know some elderly jw sisters would complain about eating steak if it bled while cooking.
has anybody else heard of this pizza nonsense?.

Designs: was on a picnic with some JWs in Solvang Ca., old Danish town, and we went into a Deli to get some things. The Deli person offered us some real blood sausage, you never saw s
Designs, I lived for a few years in Solvang when I was a kid, I just remember the great pastries. I still have a thing for great pastry, I cant stand the stuff they sell in the grocery stores, not the same thing at all.
I don't remember the pepperoni or lethicin bans. I became a JW in 1969. My staunch JW MIL used to feed hot dogs to my kids when she was watching them, she obviously didn't have a problem with them. I worked full time, so this was every day for years. To this day, one of them will not eat hot dogs.
