Thanksgiving - YES ..... Christmas - NO. Just can't get into it. Though I do love to look at everyone's beautiful light displays.

Who Will Be Celebrating Thanksgiving & XMas This Year???
by minimus infunny thing about jws----many celebrate thanksgiving but say they're only eating turkey with all the fixings by coincidence.
god made the food to be consumed everyday.
then you get witnesses who celebrate christmas the day before or after with all sorts of presents but they won't give it on the 25th because that day is pagan.

This was discussed last week & apparently I killed the thread. This is my comment to the previous ones on that thread. Does it make sense to you guys??? .................... www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/123772/2189410/post.ashx#2189410 ...... A light bulb just went on. --- I had understood from active JWs (my father et al) that the subscriptions for WT & Awakes were stopped because of the "high cost of postage". ... I never questioned it - just believed what they said (duh). ... CLAM noted the California v. Swaggart decision was on 1-17-1990. ... OnTheWayOut provided a copy of the letter from WTS to BOE dated 2-9-1990. ... It looks to me like it wasn't the cost of mailing that stopped the subscriptions - it was the Swaggart decision & sales tax. ??? ... Randy Watters booklet "Thus Saith Jehovah's Witnesses" pages 126 - 128 shows copies of correspondence from WTS dated July 1990 and Feb 1995 showing they were still insisting on a certain amount and if you didn't send it in with your request you didn't get what you ordered. (Sorry for the spacing - I'm using an Apple and haven't figured out how to fix it.)

My (JW) dad called.
by SPAZnik infor the 4th time in 6 years.
who is this man and why do i feel obligated to talk to him .
just because he and my mother eff'd each other over .

It can be exhausting - my parents don't call because it's long distance. I do call them every week or two just to keep in touch. My mother always ends up talking about how much worse the world is getting and the end is right here - any time now. It just upsets me that she still believes everything they say. My father too. In the past I tried telling her how wrong WTS is but I didn't handle it very well. ... I even told her she is brainwashed!! ... I can't believe they still even talk to me. ... What are we still doing up this time of night??? I'd better get some sleep so I can go to the Post Office tomorrow. : )

It just seems that Witnesses are less active these days.
by free2beme ini remember being a teenager and being at friends home on saturdays, and every time you turn around there was a witness knocking at the door.
my non-witness friends would be nice, and say no, as they did not want to insult me.
even though, as a teenager, i was not a witnesses (baptized) and did not make a public show of my connection to people outside of the congregation.

I haven't had one knock at my door anywhere I have lived for the last 25 years or so. The only witnesses I ever saw were on the streets of downtown Houston early in the morning before 7:00 AM. They appeared to all be spanish and most of the magazines were in Spanish. ... Of course my parents still try to get me to watch WTS videos when I visit them and try to give me magazines. I always declined but after finding this website I can see where it could be beneficial to accept them - that would give me the opportunity to point out some things to them.

I have three copies - 1983, 1992 and 2004 versions. I will be happy to give you the 1983 version if you want it. You can also borrow the 1992 version. I don 't know how much change there is in the 3 books but I keep meaning to read the 2004 version. Just haven't gotten to it yet. If you want, send me a PM with your mailing address & I'll put them in the mail on Monday.

Did You Think Elders Should've Been Able To Be "Elders For Life"?
by minimus insome of the stupidest witnesses are elders.
i've known more than a few that were basically "nice guys" but as dumb as a stump!
some never knew when to keep quiet and the other elders always had to cover for them.

My father has been an elder for as long as they have had that arrangement. He’s in his 90s. I think now he’s kind of an ‘honorary’ elder or something. They still let him play with them but he doesn’t have to do as much. He is definitely a Company Man. The WTS always came first. He still drives around the county delivering the magazines. Guess about the only thing he did disobey them in was he didn’t listen when they told him not to have any kids cause the end was so near. Now he has several great-grand children and the end is still right here – any minute now – be ready. He was always a very kind man and everyone just loves him. He was recently overheard bragging about what a humble person he is. : )

Proir to th Donation Arrangement
by concerbedbf inprior to the donation arrangement, what was their mode of operation.
since my girlfirend emphatically denies that they have ever sold their publication and are not door to door saleman, im wondering how this was done?.
if a pioneer was at you door trying to give you a magazine, did he ask for money?.

Did You Ever Get Done In By Hearsay???
by minimus inwere you ever talked to by elders or charged with something because of hearsay??
?
-
MeneMene
I didn't get "done in" but they tried. After a meeting when I was in my late teens an elder cornered me and said a certain older sister told them I had made a date to meet her grandson and go out and that I didn't show up for the date. ... After him fussing at me for not showing up, I explained that the guy was being very pushy and I couldn't get rid of him. Maybe I did say I'd meet him just to make him leave me alone (I was a KID for heavens sake). ... Then I asked if the elder if he knew the guy was married? ... That shut him up pretty fast. ... ( It was a blind date and I had no idea the guy was married until that first meeting. I sure wasn't going to see him again.)

If you didn't vote yesterday, why not? (I didn't)
by AlmostAtheist inin the u.s. we had a voting day yesterday that decided more than just any one candidate for any one position, but which ideology (democratic or republican) would hold sway over the government.
if ever there was a time to weigh in, you'd think this woulda been it.. but i didn't.. of course i'm lazy.
of course i'm distracted, and busy, and unsure of where to vote.
-

I voted yesterday for the first time in my life. .. I almost backed out but my daughter convinced me to go with her. Lightning didn't strike me either. ... I though for sure it was going to when I started to read Crisis of Conscience a few years back. : )

Beards, when were they banned?
by GramblingMan ini know it has been talked about before, but does anyone have information as to when jw started banning beards.
my wife is telling me that it started in the 60/70's because of the hippies, but i know i read somewhere on here that it was much earlier.. .

The Georgia congregation I was in during the early 1970s had a wonderful brother that grew a beard. The elders told him he had to shave it off and he refused. They either DF or DAed him (don't remember now) for not obeying them. I really thought a lot of that brother; he was such a likeable person. And a good husband and good father from what I saw. I think that may have been one of the first things to begin to open my eyes. I remember being very angry about the whole situation.
