you could tell her "I really, really want to teach you how to write English well, but I don't want to discuss religion." Keep repeating it, word for word, with a nice smile on your face. Then get back to the tutoring. Nothing like direct communication, especially as subtleties don't work with JWs or with ESL students.

Ex-Witness English tutor encounters a current Witness tutee...
by Rosie Angel ini've been tutoring this nice esl lady named patrice for awhile now.
i knew she was a witness, since i saw her studying out of the revelation book, so i kept my guard up around her.
somehow, though, i recognized an uncited passage from the nwt ecclesiastes in a paper, and i mentioned that she really needed to cite passages from the bible, just like any other book, so she used the odd witness citation.

I agree with mama1119 that I might feel bad for a bit, but I would cut my losses and move on. The problem isn't sex - I don't have any problem with someone having sex with more than one partner, as long as no lies are told and no promises broken. If you get married you've made a promise to forsake all others. So the problem is really with trust - once the trust is damaged it is hard to restore.

PBS television
by Hortensia inpbs has been really boring all week, another week of begathons.
i dislike their pretense that their programming isn't commercial, while they show commercials for their sponsors like any other television station.
i watched through a long commercial for a car, for instance, that was just like a car commercial on any other channel, before they went back to declaring with deep sincerity that public television is "supported by viewers like you.

drew sagan - I like your avatar. And I see your point about programming without commercial breaks. I don't have a lot of money and when I make donations to charity it certainly isn't to PBS - I like making donations to local groups where I can see the need and I can see how the money is being used.

Will God have mercy?
by sinis ini was thinking of this the other day.
though i am not christian or any other religion, and at times even question the validity of god (which becomes more appearent with all the shit that goes on in this world every day), i stopped and thought, what if?
what if after this life those who did not believe in a higher power, ie god, go to meet this maker.

I always loved that episode of Futurama.
as for whether god will have mercy, why worry? Do your best - I don't see how a reasonable god (if there is such a thing as god which I doubt) could hold you accountable for rules you don't know.

"Honor" of one's parents
by Pahpa inhonor is defined in the dictionary as "esteem, respect, reverence.
" the first commandment relating to human relationships was to "honor your father and mother.
" (exodus 20) this even included giving material assistance to them if they were in need.

if you take religion out of it and just look at actions and consequences, it's easy to see that children naturally love their parents, but that love can be destroyed by the parent's actions. If you treat your children badly, they aren't likely to care very much what happens when you are older. There are many many people parked in nursing homes whose children never visit.
I remember when my abusive father died, I was glad. I was given a lot of flack about how evil I am, but the truth is I was glad. I'm evil, if you want to put it that way, or I'm telling the truth about how I really felt. I was made to feel guilty about it, but now years later, with enough distance, I can see my feelings were entirely natural and understandable and the hypocrites at the KH who pressured me because of how I felt, well, I hope their kids take care of them when they get old.
I remember reading a biography of some British writer who told about how desperately he begged his father not to be sent to his school, which was very abusive. His father wouldn't listen and told him he needed to be tougher, or something like that. In the biography, the writer said that came back to him, with all the pain he felt as a kid, when his father begged not to be put in a nursing home. I don't remember who that was, but I never forgot that story.

Help! Elders are after me-need advice!
by love2Bworldly inhi--3 times this weekend 2 elders came to my door asking for me by name (my kids answered the door).
apparently my jw sister notified the elders about the letter she received from me several months ago and gave them my new address.
my letter was very clear about how i felt about the watchtower society and i have not stepped foot in a kingdom hall in about 15 years, and the last 8 years of that was sporadic at best.. why should i talk to people i did not invite to my home, when i know they are coming to condemn me?

"Am I showing them that I'm afraid by avoiding them? "
What do you care what they think? You've been out for 15 years, you didn't seek them out, they are seeking you out, you don't have to worry for one tiny second what they think, just put them on the spot about how they got your name, and do they know there are things such as privacy laws, and even organizations like the WTBTS are subject to those laws, do they want a lawsuit for violating your privacy?
I don't know if that is entirely true, but they won't know either and you'll maybe make them think a bit about how f******* much they gossip and toss people's names and private business around.

my first pledge of allegiance
by BlackSwan of Memphis intoday was parent day at jun's preschool.. and they do the pledge of allegiance.. it was funny because i was stumbling through it trying to remember it.. in all honesty, it wasn't a moment where i thought oh yay!
it was more like, eh, whatever, it's a flag.. .
it was interesting.. .

I haven't been a JW for over 20 years, but have never recited the pledge of allegiance - it just doesn't come up anywhere I go I guess. However, I do sing the "Star Spangled Banner" - not for any patriotic reason - I just like to sing it. I like to sing "How Great Thou Art" too, and I don't believe in god. It's just a nice song to sing. I don't imagine I'd recite the pledge even if I were in a situation where it was done, mainly because I wouldn't know the words and I think that reciting a pledge isn't likely to prove anyone's loyalty. It's a matter of indoctrinating young people, gotta make them repeat things a few thousand times until they think they believe it.

All week long the shows I occasionally watch have been preempted by reruns of specials like the Johnny Mathis show. I like Johnny Mathis really well, in fact, but it's just a rerun. So was the rerun with Reba McIntire singing Nellie Forbush - I liked it but I've seen it a few times already. I guess the sanctimonious tone of voice and the sense of entitlement is what gets me.

Cults
by darth frosty ini was just watching the repeat of the history channel cults program.
needless to say a lot of the cults they talked about and their beliefs reminded me of the dubs to an extent.
but, it got me to thinking...has the wt$ ever featured an article on cults and recognizing them?

I don't have an answer to your question - too long ago. But I'm watching the show for the first time right now - interesting that to be identified as a cult, a religion has to have a leader who is worshipped (GB), thought control, and exploitation from above. Have read with interest the JWD posts about the exploitation of Bethelites and pioneers. And as for thought control, how about endless meetings and conventions and bible studies and field service and judicial committees and gossip and spying on each other. Of course the WTBTS would deny that any of this is happening, but that's typical of cults, isn't it? However, the show is too upsetting, that polygamy guy exploiting the families of his followers, just terrible. I don't think I can watch the whole thing.
