Fading In? Am I nuts?
by jaydoe ini am a baptized jw that faded some years back.
in those days i deeply believed in the org and became disillusioned by some things happening in the local congregation.
following some research on the net i decided to fade out of watchtower existence because i did not want to keep mixing with false religion (or so i thought at the time).

If you feel so inclined and you are not being coerced by anything or anyone to go back maybe you should. No you are not going nuts. You just might be on the wrong forum. I wouldn't give too much credence to most of the extremely exagerated criticisms and urban legends about the organization. There is a measure of truth to some of it but most has been bloated beyond recognition for personal reasons. Surfrusty

Watchtower never took preaching work seriously!!
by proplog2 inthere has been a lot of discussion about the claim that the gb feel they have fullfilled their obligation to preach.. this would be no surprise.
jesus said if you want to really do what is right you need to sell your property and give to the poor.
and then... you could follow jesus.. after pentecost there was an arrangement where an individual could sell his property and give the proceeds to the apostles.

First of all. Do you really want it beamed everwhere???? There is alot of things to criticize but I find this one a bit weak.
First of all, your example of the christians after Pentecost is not directly applicable to this argument. They sold some of their property with the purpose to provide for the Jewish proselytes in Jerusalem at that time. There is no indication that this situation continued after they all went home. Neither is there any indication in the NT that the average christian had sold all of their belongings. Right or wrong I think they haven't used more modern forms spread the message because of an overly emphasizing the doorstep visits. Because of that, one it would seem could argue of the wisdom of that choice but hardly the effort put into it. -

The Fulfillment of Matthew 24:14 - What Does It Mean For You?
by Nosferatu inlol!
i can't wait for that wt magazine to come out.
yeah, i know, another thread on matt 24:14.. but it's not about the prophecy, it's about how it's going to affect us if this is going to be a worldwide blast of new light.

I heard from some reliable sources that he went out on a limb and the the WTS didn't sanction those comments. Anyone else hear that?

Yeah I agree with that. We all have dissonance to deal with. And it isn't necessarily always negative. But knowing it's effects can help us to view things from a different perspective. Unfortunately sometimes it's difficult to know what kind of hoops our mind is jumping through to reduce dissonance.

I noticed you didn't really address what I said. But that's ok. I'm not suggesting anything. The whole reason the CD thing was brought up was to show why a dissenting view on this board is not appreciated and will never be heard much here. Believe me I wish I had a Ferrari though, dissonance or not...

I see it on both sides of the issue. I think it keeps some people in and it makes some people leave. Obviously in this forum I'm referring to the CD that causes people to leave because that is what most people on these boards have done. Regarding your question... A classic example of cognitive dissonance that is used in teaching the theory is this: A man on an impulse buys a sports car that he can't afford and doesn't need. He gets home and he starts feeling guilty (dissonance) so he gets on the internet and starts searching for favorable reviews of his car and anything that would reinforce the "wisdom" of his purchase. He latches on to all positive feedback and turns a blind eye to anything negative. The end result is the conflict or dissonance is reduced. I think there is much of the same process happening here. Many people have made a terribly difficult decision which has produced a tremendous amount of dissonance. People are here, in part, to hear how great of a car they have bought. Hence, opposing views would not be very well accepted and promptly rejected.

How many on this board started out here as JWs defending their "faith"?
by new boy ini left 6 months before i found this place........but if i had found it 15 years ago, i would have been one of those fighting tooth and nail for the watchtower bible & tract society.. i know this board has helped 100's if not thousands of people with the real truth about the organization............ in the face of logic and reason, how could it not!.

"JW's are under a lot of pressure within themselves to keep up the appearance of belief in things which clash with common sense, reality and factual history. It takes a lot of energy and support to remain neurotically primed at all moments of the day!" True... But, only JW's suffer from CD? I believe there is alot of it flowing around here.
