The chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter
by uuus2b1 inlast year, i bought a few movies for my 16 year old niece when i went on vacation, among them was the movie "the chronicles of narnia (the lion, the witch and the wardrobe).
a few days later my brother called and said that he would like if i came by to pick up the movie as they would not allow their daughter to watch that movie.
(my brother is an elder) when i went to his house the movie was left virtually the same place that i had left it.

I remember when the little mermaid came out, we had a JW get-together and watched it as a bookstudy group. Thinking back..there was a witch in there too! Ursula..singing "poor unfortunate souls" What's wrong with that witch!

(My brother is an elder) When I went to his house the movie was left virtually the same place that I had left it. No one touched it! It was as if they were all scared that it might bring evil spirits into their house! I felt very bad to say the least, but I took it back and gave it to a longtime friend of mine. Now I understand the word "witch" might have set off some alarms in their minds but I am sure that none of them had actually seen the movie to make a judgement on whether to allow a 16 year old to watch it. Maybe its just me drifting away from from the 'faith' but I found it to be a very clean and entertaining movie. I feel the same way about the much maligned "Harry Potter" series by the wittnesses also..just fantasy and entertainment. Similar experiences/feelings anyone?

The image in Daniels dream...what does it mean now?
by uuus2b1 ini am new here, so i know i missed this being discussed in earlier threads......anyway i remember how prominently the image in daniels dream was being portrayed in public talks and books...especially when russia was a world power.
since the breakup of that country, what is the new explanation for the 'gog of magag'.
also the feet of the image that was of part clay and stone or something like that, symbolized unrest by democratically ruled nations.

Has there been 'new light' in the explanation of that too?...anyone?

Birthday pay for JWs
by uuus2b1 inwhere i work... an employee's birthday is a paid holiday.
as a witness and an elder, i always had a tough time explaining why jws didn't celebrate birthdays but could accept the day off and be paid for it .
"a matter of conscience" was usually the explanation.

Re:"NOT take that free turkey at Thanksgiving? HA!"
Also...Where I work...Most JWs accepted the yearly free Thanksgiving Turkey and Christmas ham..they just make sure to cook them on days other than what they were meant for. ;-)

"A matter of conscience" was usually the explanation. Secretly, I always thought it was hypocrital. Personally, I would not take the day off but I definetly would keep the cash! I know of others JWs that would take both and would be mad if any error prevented them from getting the money they so rightly deserved!
Any thoughts?

Stuck in a dead-end job because of obeying anti-higher education policy?
by nvrgnbk indid you refrain from obtaining a degree or advanced studies when you had the chance because it wasn't the witness thing to do?
how has this affected your life?
comments, rants, and personal experiences please.

At 17 my best friend at school (and best man at my wedding) was a super teen witness and was largely the reason why I became a witness in the first place. While I was a quiet, secret meeting attender, he preached to everyone and anyone at school. Teachers as well as students... even conducting bible studies during lunch (I sat in on a few) Although he was pretty smart he felt that he did not need any more education than we were currently recieving because of how close we were to the "end of the system of things and of course the society's stand on higher learning. That was over 20 years ago, although we do not communicate much anymore, I saw him when I went back home (St. Lucia) about a year ago, at the memorial. (My mom insisted that I attend) he came in late because was rushing... of course because he had to pick up all his studies that promised to attend. When he saw me he gave me a half hearted smile (probably because he heard that I was not "doing too well" spiritually. Not sure how high up he was in the cong...(maybe just an elder) but to me he looked tired and burnt out...through the grapevine I found out that his wife was always sick and can't work, he still doesn't have a regular job, so he has to become really creative in trying to make ends meet to provide for their material needs...while still taking care of all congregation needs! Your question makes me wonder how much better he might have been able to provide for her if he had taken his education seriously back then.

Re: I saw uuus2b1 post and the welcome he received and figured I'd post to...
Hi All,
it gave me chills when I saw how just one post from me can illicit so many positive responses. Especially the above that I saw this morning from sceptic1914...Many thanks to all who unknowingly encouraged me to make the leap. Although I 'came out' I am still a little gun shy about starting new threads, I enjoy reading everyones elses. I feel much the same way as skeptic1914 though...there are good people in the organization who truly mean well, my family included, but I think for most, it will take a monumental event, like death or divorce or separtion in my case to cause one to move away from the forest so that they can see the trees. If you are in there, it will be difficult to think diffently because of the subtle pressure of your peers and the constant barage of information from 5 weekly meetings. I don't want to judge anyone who are "active" but still posting here, but when I was an active elder I would never read anything that was not written by the FDS, I remember peeking at a website once, man...my heart was racing so much that I couldn't get through it. I realise now how much control they had over my mind. Anyway...welcome sceptic1914. I hope you are enjoying your time here as much as I am.
