I have been to plenty of funerals and weddings in churches. The problem with the WTBS is that they fail to see the difference between the physical location, i.e. being in a church building, and mental and moral support of other religious organizations, which are two entirely different things. What they are always worried about is keeping up appearances.

Any "Born Again" Christians here?
by sacolton inwould like to see how many have accepted jesus christ as the only way, truth and life..

I am not 'born again' and unfortunately at this point in time do not associate with any other religious people (call it a church or a faith) because of the fact that my wife is 'still' in. However, that doesn't mean that I do not consider myself a Christian, far from it in fact.
One thing that does worry me is that I do not what to die without a faith as it were. It might just be me, but I would like the support of a religion and religious faith at the end of my life. -

Shorter WT Studies?
by passwordprotected inanyone else think that the wts will be rolling out shorter wt studies on sundays?
i noticed in the latest kool aid wts that some of the study articles were around 15 paragraphs in length.

The amount of material appears to be about the same. I see the big difference is that it mandates the scritures to be read - greater thought control than ever.

The new book study arrangement...what it could mean
by undercover ini've heard mentioned in a couple of places the admonition from the society about how the new void left by the discontinuing of the book study night should be filled with spiritual study or family worship instead of tv or just viewing it as a "night off".. this is the new spin on the society dropping that meeting night; "just because we gave you a night off from meetings doesn't mean you get to relax.
you should use this time for family study.
if you don't, then you invite satan into your home through your tv set or dvd player or cd player or internet connection.

Here's my take:
- More centralization. 1/2hr public talks, all question and answer parts totally scripted. At least the book study gave the opportunity for a much less formal appraoch, to involve the kids and those on the shy side. The meetings have become increasingly regimented over recent years - this is a step too far in my opinion.
- It will polarize the hard-liners and the 'spiritually weak'. The 'spiritually weak' will see it as another night off. The 'hard-liners' will relish the new arrangement.
- The elders will be asked to monitor even more carefully those families not reporting a family study and will be targeted for special shepherding.

The dreaded assembly experiences ....
by eyeslice insitting through the items with experiences at the one day special assembly day last weekend reminded me just how dreadful having to handle experiences at the assemblies were.
when i was an elder, i used to dread getting assembly assignments that included experiences; they were always so fake.. .
nothing ever happened in our circuit that was ever noteworthy or outstanding, and you usually ended up re-hashing the same old stuff from years ago.. .

I remember a youngish brother relating experiences when he had been travelling in Vietnam and Cambodia, etc. What he didn't mention was all the grief his local elders gave him about being away from the meetings for 6 months at time whilst he went on his excursions.

The worst at the last assembly was concerning a sister who died in child birth. Lots of bad news in the press but of course what the press didn't report was that a member of the family not previously in the truth is now studying. Wow, how good is that!

I'm with you Farkal on the make it up as you go along!. The last public talk I gave was in 2002 but there was I time when I must have given every public talk from no 1 to no 108 (or whatever). In India, I used to give a public talk somewhere or other nearly every week!

Going to Church
by excito-are ini went to church in my local town while the witnesses attended the perth assembly.
it was a good sermon and i actually felt very upbuilt and refreshed after listening to it.
i really thought i would of felt guilt or some negative feeling for doing this, but quite the opposite.

Personally, I feel the need to attend a church or to be part of some sort or religious movement; I am reluctant to use the word 'organisation' because of its JW connotations. However, as my wife is still 'in' and I feel that the local elders would be on me like a ton of bricks and disfellowship me, I am reluctant to attend any church at the moment.
If nothing else, I think that religion should help us face up to our own mortality; either in terms of the Christian hope of the resurrection or the eastern religious approach that our own lives are simply part of a bigger cosmic presence in to which we dissolve at death. -

Once a year, for the last 5 years. The Memorial is the only meeting I feel obliged to attend for family reasons.

horrible life - that was an excellent experience. If you were still in I bet they would still be re-hashing that even years later.
