So sad to hear such bad news. Deepest sympathy to all the family. Although I never met Ian personally, I found him to be a true gentleman. I really appreciated his private emails to me when I was struggling, having just left the 'truth'. I know that he was a man who believe that life was a spiritual journey. May his spirit find the happiness he deserves.

Salvation Army v Jehovah's Witnesses at Xmas

they weren't playing carols today, simply out with collecting tins and big smiles.

It occurred to me just how differently people view them compared with Jehovah's Witnesses. At the best of times, people don't want to stop and talk with the Witnesses but at Xmas it is even worse, they are viewed as total kill joys.
Whilst personally, I don't see Jesus ever wanting to see his followers being called an 'army' and have to wear a uniform of faith, I do get the impression that the Salvation Army is well respected by the community in general for being honest, Godly people who really care and work hard for the poor and less well off amongst us.
Hats off to the Sally Army I say. -

We The Poor- by Arundhati Roy

I am a great admirer of Arandhati Roy. I have read her one and only novel, the God of Small Things, and found it an tremedous work of fiction.
I am slightly worried by her extremist views. She seems to blame all of the current problems in the world on the greed of the USA!
I used to live a few blocks away from her when I lived in New Delhi and although she rightly draws attention to the fact that the gap between rich and poor is widening, we lived in the most affluent and well off part of Delhi - so I am not sure where the title 'We the poor' comes from. I was a witness at the time and found it very hard to justify my wealth compared with the average brothers and sisters in the congregation. I fear that justice for the poor and equality are just a dream,

JWs say its impossible for "worldly people" to be happy
by shopaholic ini've had 3 different jws tell me this over the past few weeks.
basically their thinking is non-jws are not happy and when they appear to be its not real, its not a true happiness.
according to them, non-jws use drugs, alcohol and wild sex to make themselves happy.

Happiness is a state of mind and what this is and how to obtain is very complex.
I know a lot of happy JWs but on the other hand I have seen a lot of unhappiness. A lot of this is inflicted by the organization itself - I have seen a lot of extreme unhappiness in Judicial Committee meetings.
Sine leaving, I have given a number of current JWs a copy of the book 'Stop Thinking and Start Living' to depressed current Witnesses. Quite a different take on finding inner happiness than the guilt trip 'you must do more' dished out by the Society. -

Vegetarianism Suggestions?
by exjdub inmy wife and i are having trouble getting past the way animals are treated for our food supply and also the unhealthy things that are introduced into our food supply.
we have also discussed the fact that if our meat, chicken, pork, and turkey was not packaged in little vacuum packed trays where we could exercise a large amount of cognitive dissonance, we would not be able to eat animals.
i was hoping someone would have some favorite suggestions for books and resources to begin the journey toward vegetarianism.

I have been a vegetarian for a few years now and haven't had any dietary related health problems. I do lots of running and never get coughs or colds, which can't be bad.
I eat lots of Indian food; after all about 80% of India's 1 billion people are vegetarian so they have a lot of experience in vegetarian cooking! Indian food isn't vegan and you can get lots of recipes that include eggs and paneer (Indian cottage cheese)
I would recommend 'Easy Indian' by Das Sreedharan (available from Amazon.com). It has the most beautiful recipes for India dishes that are flavoursome rather than just 'spicy' hot. However, (1) you have to love spicy food or at least acquire the taste and (2) sometimes getting the proper ingredients can be difficult unless you have an expat-Indian community in your area.
I used to live in India and still return regularly; if you ever get a chance to visit, it is worth it for the food alone.

It's sad that these stories generate excitement with the Witnesses. Now if Obama had then decided to become a witness and give up worldly politics, then this would have been big news.
Its like the assembly experiences of the little ones who witness to their teachers and leave literature and the like. Nothing every happens afterwards! Talk about wanting their ears tickled. -

I still get the magazines and latest publications through my wife. As Blondie has pointed out there are still references to 1914 but I do detect that the 1914 message is rapidly losing the credibility it once had.
The next few years as we approach 2014 will be very interesting. As Christ's enthronement in 1914 was with respect to sorting out earth's woes, 100 years of doing nothing will be difficult to explain.
