A long time ago I decied I had a certain purpose in life, then the WT started to come back into my life, then I started to feel guilty that I believed that my "true" purpose in life was to live meagerly and distribute magazines.
Thank God I have the internet.

Remember the WT angle in.... "Do you have a purpose in life?"
by Gregor inreveals the type of person they are fishing for.
people looking for someone to take over, people who have f'd up their life so bad they are desperate for someone to tell them how to tie their shoes.
in short, the wts is looking for people who are vulnerable to an authority figure cult.. healthy people asked this question would laugh in your face and tell you to get lost.

Do You Still Act Like A Jehovah's Witness?
by prophecor ini'm not very far removed, any longer from how i presented myself as a witness, and how i do today.
i'm usually polite, cordial, respectful of others, even those who i may have very little regard for or those who on a regular basis, piss me off.
i work very hard not to use foul language.

Having been out in "the world" for a long time, and then a few months ago re-thinking my conduct, well now I still swear less then I used to but now I don't feel so guilty about it. I also don't feel so guilty anymore mastrubating and finding myself late at night having half of my brain turned off and the on part wanting to look at pic of boobs(I think I have lesbian tendencies. but then again years of sexual restraint do this kinda thing to people, I've heard acounts of orgies at Bethel).
But I am stll very polite, and make no attempts to steal, cheat, or lie just becuase I feel like it. "Bless you" still irks me though. And I still stand up for what I believe in when it comes to debates. -

Do jws have to 'want' to believe it
by A Paduan inthere are so many flaws in every piece of literature that the wtbts puts out, so many false prophecies made and changed, such dubious and unsubstantiated beginnings to the group, and so many weird beliefs.. could you believe it without actually wanting to ?.
do you have to want to believe it to be a jw ?.

Also desperate.
JWs prey on the desperate, weak, distressed, poor, and those that want biblical truth but have no bs detector.
Or at least it seems to, a lot of Watchtower conversion stories have former soldiers distressed from war, people who are grieving loved ones, or scientists with no bs detector.
I noticed a lot of JW celeberties are black for some reason. A lot of black celeberties like Micheal Jackson and the Wayans brothers grew up with JW parents. Now I might be generalizing here, and I don't want people to take my word for it on this, but many black celeberties come from poor or dysfunctional families, but it should be noted that there are white celeberties who also come from similar background.
Another black celeberty, Prince became one after his baby died I think. -

Convince me
by Liza ini am highly considering becoming a jehovah's witness.
i have been raised in the congregration, but left it when i was a child because my mom left too, but we still retatined the core belifs including the ressurection and the blasphemous pagan influence on mainstream churches.
my mom has recently returned to the congregation, and it has helped her a lot.

Gerard-ah, I've read more about it now, and yeah it also seems illogical about what the WTS does allow. It was mentioned in an excerpt in http://www.commentarypress.com/eng-search-ch9-01.html how:
<i>As one person observed, it is as if a person were instructed by a doctor to stop eating ham and cheese sandwiches, but told that it is acceptable to take the sandwich apart and eat the bread, the ham and the cheese separately, not as a sandwich.</i>
heh.
As for MJ, well I kinda thought aobut that too, that the order of animals isn't consistent. However I sometimes wonder if the the word used for "birds" or "flying creatures" really reffered to insects since many scientists regard insects as being both the first animlas on land and in the air. I still kinda belive in that no one idea of how life on Earth formed or started is enough, that all the big three categories, creation, intelligent design, and evolution may have all happened.
Though that pretty much confirms the suspicion many people here hold already that I would be shunned by the JWs the first day after being baptized.
Oh and found out that CT Russel wasn't a freemason but was a noted pyramidologist. -

If any signifigant proof about a spirit world, God, or anything in that realm was to ever resurface, it would be a huge disaster to society. Religious persecution would be worse, and the persecuted or "religions proved to be wrong" would deny and lash back. People's view of the world around them and what they hold true would drastically change. Think of what Agent K said in "Men in Black" what would happen if humans knew about aliens.
So any such evidence is best kept secret. -

Origins of the stake instead of the Cross
by wab07 ini have been a member on this site for a few months now and this is my first post.
anyways, my mother is a loyal jw and i often email her asking questions hoping to give rise to contradictions in the her beliefs.
i recently asked her when and why the cross was replaced with the stake.

Liza
I've heard about other people crucified by the Romans, and all depictions by historians on them also put them on a cross, so I think it is very likely Jesus was put on a cross too.

How do JWs explain John 20:28?
by Zico inmuch is made of john 1:1 in trinitarian discussions and there's a lot of debate over how it should be correctly translated, depending on your particular bias on the jesus god issue, but surely there is no scripture more clear that jesus is god than the one where thomas directly calls him god in john 20:28?
27next he said to thomas: put your finger here, and see my hands, and take your hand and stick it into my side, and stop being unbelieving but become believing.28in answer thomas said to him: my lord and my god!
how do jehovah's witnesses deal with this scripture?
-
Liza
I myself am very confused about this too.
There are sites showing scriptures that are for and against the trinity. I myslef am still reluctant to accept a trinity view mainly because da Vinci Code fanatics like to poke at it too much to support beleiving a novel with made-up evidence.
However there are several ways to approach it:
Maybe it's like the movie, "Bruce Almighty" where God is a changable position. Like greendawn mentioned, maybe Jesus wasn't God, but in Revelations or after he died he became God and Yaweh went on to do something else.
Maybe Jesus was "splitted" from God. After dying he "reunited" with God. Which could be a reason why "Yaweh" no longer appears in the NT, but "Lord" does.
This is a very hard to grasp thing because we are dealing with supernatural hohaa and laws and forces outside of known logic and physics, quantam physics tends to get like this too. Though it is intresting to mention that quantam theorists like to say a lot that light can exist at two places at once.
