I like my wife's description of the Memorial from an outsider's point of view..."it has all the warmth of a tax seminar"!

What happened to the "Witness" part of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by donny ini just got back from my afternoon walk/run and about a block from home i saw two sets of jw's going door to door handing out invites to the memorial.. the first pair walked past me and only said "good afternoon" as they passed.. about two minutes later the second pair approached me and handed me an invite to 2014 memorial on april 14. i asked them why they chose the jw's as their church of choice and was told "we'd like to chat more but we have a set number of invites we have to get out before the memorial.
if you contact the kingdom hall listed here, they will tell you more... on how god's kingdom will rid the world of satan and the evil associated with him.".
i replied "you can't talk now?".

The Watchtower: Does This Game Of Jenga Ever End?
by metatron inthere are a great many fine posts here - and some from 8 years back - detailing how apathetic and perfunctory the organization has become.. and yet, it still stands, doesn't it?.
is there any point to be reached in this apparent 'experiment in sociology' in which they wake up and say 'screw this?
' if they crammed 10 congregations into one hall and stole the money, would any witnesses wake up?

I am not convinced anything will wake everyone...if pedophilia cover ups, major "new light", flip flops on doctrine, etc. haven't done the trick, I don't know what will. If a person is brainwashed, it's tough to change that group think. Depressing thought, but an unfortunate reality...

An Anti-Witnessing Campaign, Please Join Me!
by What Now? inin the past few weeks, the shunning issue has become a very personal one for me, and i have begun to realize that it is not just enough for me and my family to fade out.
after some recent events, i am motivated to start some anti-watchtower activism of my own.. i, like many others, have hoped that there would be a scandal of epic proportions within the organization, something that would wake others up and trigger a mass exodus.. while i am still hopeful that this may happen, it seems that the organization is too good at damage control, and heightening the paranoia surrounding apostates.. but what if the ex-witness community tried a different approach?.
what if, to borrow a hockey term, a sort of shut out situation was created?.

I like the concept...I just wonder if people are pro-active enough to do what they need to to get on the "do not call" list. Many people just "go along" to be polite. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

by nonjwspouse infor some reason my husband has picked this topic after months of non communication of anything related biblical at all.
( he believes he came up with the idea onhis own ( he was raised jw and left as a 18 year old...ugh...right).
so since this was his topic my own thoughts have been expressed as well.

Watching Amish Shunned on PBS...very deja vu if you are/were a JW!
by tenyearsafter inthis is a very interesting documentary...the similarities are so close, you could substitute jw for amish!
anyone else watching this?.

I think the bottom line brought out in the documentary was that absolute obedience was required of the members by the church...any deviation was viewed as rebellion and harshly dealt with (shunning). The same legalistic view as JW's. At least the Amish allow their young a year in the "world" (Rumspringa) before holding them responsible to the church rules and the consequences of shunning!

Live debate tonight: Bill Nye (evolution) vs Ken Ham (creationism)
by EndofMysteries ini thought i'd share since i figured some on this forum would be interested being that the same topic has been debated numerous times here.
http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2014/02/03/why-im-debating-the-science-guy-about-creationism/?hpt=hp_t2.
i wish i was able to see it but i'm assuming i'll be able to catch it on youtube or transcripts.

This was more a debate about the "young earth" belief system rather than a debate about creation...I felt neither made their point regarding creation, be it intelligent design or random event. Nye spent too much time expressing disappointment in Ham's "new earth" belief, and Ham side-stepped Nye's questions regarding apparent discrepancies in the Flood account, etc..
I felt like I lost an hour of my life I will never get back!

They are extreme, but the emotions and sense of loss expressed by ex-members is nearly identical to that suffered by many JW's...
