sorry folks, i know the "candace conti case" is where all our time attention should be for now.
i just had this much less important issue on my heart and wanted to make a quick note of it, as i am struggling with remembering all the details as clearly afterward.. although i am a non-religious believer and simple follower of jesus, i have had some constructive interaction with atheists and agnostics on jwn.
i do enjoy learning more about their perspective.

This generally creates better mutual understanding which is conducive to less prejudice, ignorance and hostility in society.

I believe his statement above draws into play at least two or even more distinct groups or maybe no "group think' at all.
I see calm balance in his statements
I think the "Let me just try to understand this attitude" trumps 'I'll get you attitude "
Plus it simply makes you feel better inside (ones fight or flight hormones don't have to cut in )

I want to point out that the OP acknowledges that he has had good, respectful conversations on JWN with atheists. He isn't addressing any and all atheists, but only the ones who in his estimation have been abusive.

...if we are in a "defensive frame of mind" we would take offence and say "it is a generalization , he's including every Christian alive"

The board was in chaos for quite awhile, and some of us are still wary and paranoid because of the experience. You may be seeing the after-effects of it. The board got quite polarized, divided into atheists/believers.

in some small way i think i understand one reason for shaving new recruits or prisoners.
